I absolutely adore Japanese fiction. I think there's just something so wonderfully human and real about the way Japanese authors write and the stories they tell. Not all ofc, Murata's Earthlings and a lot of Murakami are straight awesomely weird but stuff like days of the Morisaki bookshop, before the coffee gets cold, Convenience Store Woman, just wonderful I think.

April has been a total wash out for me. I haven't finished one single book... though I've started 3 or 4. I'm about 50 pages in to "White Nights" by Dostoyevsky and am really loving it so far

We have to thank Emily Fox for promoting I who have never known men to the masses. As for speech marks, Saramago didn't use them either and it was such a pleasure reading him, mainly due to how the reading flowed, at least in spanish. I'm not sure if he was the first to do that, but I guess it does require a high skill to pull it off.

omg i had no idea another booktuber promoted the book! love what the power of youtube can do! and interesting, i’ve never read a saramago book but im intrigued to now pick one up! even with sally rooney i just hate when there’s no speech marks

I also think that as a non-japanese reader I lost some nostalgia/elements about morisaki bookshop, they talk about specific writers and books and I'm sure they must evoke emotions in readers that recognise them.
@katerinareem
@katerinareem 2 ай бұрын
true !!! this was totally another point which maybe why i didn’t connect with the book as much, some of the japanese references went completely over my head which is a shame bc im sure they would’ve added a whole new layer to the novel
