I thought I’d create a video about some of the different types and categories of tics since a lot of people ask about it :)
I’m not a doctor or a neurologist so this is just what I know from personal research and what I’ve learnt from dealing with Tourettes Syndrome personally.

It is incredibly amazing how you are using something someone else could see as a disaster, to create awareness. “What doesn’t destroy you,makes you stronger”, and you are definitely a tough lady. I noticed how little the tics seem to effect you when you’re not in a over-stimulating environment, or around other people. You were able to talk clearly and concisely through many paragraphs of dialogue without a tic.

Hi love I’m so glad I’ve found your channel. I was diagnosed with Tourette’s when I was 6 years old, I am 27 now (female) and they have changed so much over the years but never went away. I used to have motor ticks along with vocal ticks when I was younger and now all I do is pop my ears and make humming noises at the same time. No one knows except for my family I’ve been embarrassed my whole life but I want to start being more open about it. You’re an inspiration thank you for being you 💖

My father has tourette syndrome and I honestly never understood some of the things he did until now. When I was a child I would notice that after a conversation with someone, he would whisper certain phrases of the conversation over and over again to himself. However if he noticed I was watching, he could stop himself. I honestly thought it was entirely separate from his tourettes, but now I understand the replaying of words in his mind is echoskepsi. Thank you for explaining this, I feel like I know him even better now

First off, I love you so much. It cracks me up when you laugh at yourself. A couple of questions... 1-Would you be willing to do a video talking about how you were diagnosed/the progression/treatment? 2-Do your motor tics hurt? (Other than when you hit yourself, of course)

From experience i can say that motor tics other than just ones like hitting or smacking can hurt. Some people including myself have them. Like sometimes i’ll have a tic that like holds my hand in a fist and it can cause a lot of muscle pain especially if it goes for prolonged periods of time (there can also be other tics like this), some also like neck jerking tics or like arm throwing tics can pull at muscles and stuff and cause pain. I personally also have some where i bite stuff like my fingers or pinch/stab myself with my fingernails etc. there are also motor tics that can stop you breathing or like only causing u to inhale/exhale and they can cause pain. Some people also have like hair pulling tics which can be painful. also ik u didn’t ask but vocal tics can hurt too. Often it happens when they are too high pitch or for some people grungting like ones.

Hi Zara and thanks for posting this video explaining different types of tics. What is particularly interesting are the skepsi tics, do you think there are people who have these spontaneous thoughts or words entering their minds who are undiagnosed, thus making tourettes more common than we think?

Oh this is interesting!!! I'm pretty sure I don't have tourettes (or if I *do* it's nowhere near severe enough to warrant going through the bother of getting a diagnosis), but I have noticed I'll get some small motor tics (normally just repetitive blinking or squeezing something) and echoskepsi tics (your tics actually) that are ongoing for.... like idk probably 3 months after I watch one of your videos lol

For me I've noticed I will have skepsi tics of things that are more complex than I normally do outloud, so like I'll have a partial or full sentence come in my head (which I only ever have complex vocal tics during tic attacks) and it feels the same as a premonitory urge and then only the first word or first sound of that sentence will come out.

Has anyone figured out yet what part of the brain regulates self control? Tied with vocabulary and outside stimulus. I am assuming neuron firing too fast in some cases. Focus helps ;there is a key clue. Pathways possibly shaped different thicker or thinner. When you truly grab their attention none tick at all; for short durations. Genetic alteration is the key to what ails this world. Your beautiful keep teaching us.

Wow, I can't imagine how much of an hindrance this must be in life. Must make literally every action take much longer to do due to losing focus (I mean I'm not sure about that as some of it happens without realization). Since you tried to keep the video relatively clean from tics, I'm guessing just even making those clips were a challenge on its own. But maybe I'm wrong by that you don't actually have them happen as frequently as we might think when looking at these videos for instance, since they're edited. What's like your average tick rate in a minute ?

Thank you for doing this, it was very interesting and informative; I really enjoyed it. @Zara_Beth

a compulsion associated with ocd is different to a tic, they feel different as a tic is a physical urge much like an itch/needing to cough or blink whereas a compulsion is the thought of needing to do something to satisfy the mental feeling of unjust (if that makes sense). i have both ocd and tourettes and they’re pretty easily separable when you understand both and can feel them :)) i hope that helps, i’m planning to do a video on ocd at some point

But I can see how the more obvious ones could be a problem in public I've gotten stuck in my head repeating things. Like to the point where it's totally noticable by me. But. It's not verbal. Or. 99% of the time it's not verbal. I also have made up music in my head ... often. And rhyming....to no end... It's just a natural thing for me. And it's not something that often is verbal. Although. My cats know it well. Because I can talk to them .. and if it's amusing to me. They like it too

I have only just discovered several videos on Tourettes and have learnt lots, I have noticed some people with the condition name their Tourettes as in giving it a character/ first name, is this some technique or therapy to help either the person with the condition or more a tool to help people understand the situation. I am guessing it is a coping mechanism. What do you think/ know of this practice? | Much Love, peace & Respect | Stay Safe.

it’s a kind of fun thing that we do as a way to “blame” the swearing and inappropriate stuff on tourettes by personifying it, some people don’t like it as it makes tourettes seem like someone else entirely but it can help some people. i personally havent named mine purely because i’m too indecisive to pick a name lmao

It almost seems like the subconscious is going at 1000 mph and for some reason it makes it so you can't stop yourself from saying something your subconscious is thinking. I feel like most people get these little passing thoughts throughout the day but less extreme and we don't say it lol

In fourth grade my teacher was talking with the janitor that walked into the room, and she laughed out loud, and there was I in the front row, involuntarily copying her laugh OUT LOUD. She swung her darting eyes at me and yelled "😠Do you want your name on the board!!?" 🤣

Are the copying what people say in writing useful when copying notes in class sometimes? I know most of the time they are really annoying, but are they ever kind of useful?
@Zara_Beth
@Zara_Beth Жыл бұрын
not really, it’s not “usual writing” as it’s a sudden hand movement tic, usually more of a legible scribble of one word

Great video! I'm a teacher and one of my students has a tic, but won't talk about it. Any ways I can help without drawing attention to the fact I'm trying to help?

i think asking if there’s anything you could do to help them deal with their tics or anything to make them feel more comfortable may help? it varies person to person, my tics are very disruptive and hard to cope with so my teachers are educated massively on tourettes just from being with me whereas someone with milder tics may not want to tell anyone. maybe ask them nicely and say they don’t have to feel bad about it, you just want to help them feel their most confident :) hope that helps

@@justgoodgirlnikki If they don’t want to talk about it, why bother them? It might not bother them, but bringing attention to it could make them self conscious of increase it because you’ve drawn their attention to it.
