All The Stations

7 жыл бұрын

It's Sunday 21st May, and we're out to really to do just one station today, but it's an important one - the only day Geoff and Vicki can get a train to Manchester United Football Ground this summer.
Plus a bonus interview with Richard Evans, a Southeastern driver (even though, the interview was done on a Southern train!)
This video was originally intended to be published last week, but due to the terrible events at Manchester Arena on the Monday the day after we were there, we delayed its publishing.
Richard's KZfaq Channel / dadrail

You can actually get to Old Trafford by Canal boat really nice relaxed way to do the trip having done it by train (has not been running the last 2 I went to) and by tram (because the train was not running) and by Barge because my son suggested it. Sadly on all 3 occasions BHAFC have lost.

St James Park station in Exeter is adjacent to the football ground and is on the Paignton to Exmouth service and is used on non matchdays too. It was called Lion's Holt until 1946 and the football club actually contribute to the upkeep of the station.

Victoria, there's a way to figure out what type of train it is look at the numbers. if the train has 6 numbers it's a multiple unit. in this case the first 3 numbers are the class of train the types of trains are broken up like so: 1xx - diesel multiple unit 2xx - diesel electric multiple unit 3xx - electric multiple unit (25kV AC overhead lines - exceptions are the 313, 319 and a couple of electrostar classes which are dual voltage) 4xx - southern region, 750 V DC third rail 5xx - merseyrail electrics (750 V DC third rail) then there's some more modern trains that don't fur this pattern any longer such as the class 700 (new Thameslink trains) and class 800 (IEP) but in general that's how it's broken down. you were on a 323 btw, a 3 car electric multiple unit that takes power from the 25kV AC overhead line system. You can tell if your on a sprinter because the number at the front will always be with 15x xxx I. e. 150 - sprinter 153 - single car sprinter 155 - regional sprinter 156 - super sprinter 158 - express sprinter 159 - a 3 car variety of the 158 solely in use with south west trains.

different numbers signify different families of trains too so just looking at the DMU's (those starting with a 1) 14X - pacer 15X - sprinter 16X - networker (turbo) 17X - turbostar with the exception of the 175 which is not a turbostar. 175 & 180 - Coradia 185 is an odd one. they are technically in the 'Desiro' family by Siemens even though the rest of that family (class 350, 360, 380 etc. are all electric multiple units or E.M.Us

Karen Pinchbeck I know what you mean. I work for Scotrail up in Aberdeen and whilst I mostly work on 170's (which are everywhere) I love getting the opportunity to work one of our 158s. They're older, tattier and noisier but I love working them and I can't really explain why.

I'm more of a Quiddich fan myself. But we have both Footballs in my area. The American has a huge stadium with a light rail station that services more than it. The Rest of the World football stadium is smaller but still very popular, serviced by bus, as is most of our public transit. But trains of various sorts are making a come back.

I know I am late to the party (I discovered ATS only last week and have been binge-watching), but in my country there's a couple of stations like this: * Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA, which serves the Amsterdam Arena, the home turf of AFC Ajax; * Rotterdam Stadion, which serves De Kuip, where Feijenoord plays its home games; * Eindhoven Stadion, which serves the Philips Stadion, home turf of PSV Eindhoven * Heerenveen IJsstadion, which serves the Thialf skating rink, where international speed skating competitions are held. Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA has a regular service by NS, the main Dutch railway company. The others are only used during special events. Curiously, of these, only Rotterdam Stadion is on the official list of railway stations, Eindhoven Stadion and Heerenveen IJsstadion are not.
@DJTrainBrain
@DJTrainBrain 6 жыл бұрын
No worries, my story about discovering All The Stations is quite similar :-) Don't forget Amsterdam ArenA (without Bijlmer in the name), which is used for supporters of the visiting team when there is a risk of clashes. It's just north of Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA, and its one platform directly connects to the visiting team supporters' area in the stadium, keeping them segregated all the way from the platform to their seats and back. I wonder how one would try visiting it if their goal is to simply visit all the stations in the Netherlands... Indeed Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA sees regular service too, as it also serves some other entertainment venues, a shopping centre and one of Amsterdam's major office districts, along with nearby residential and industrial areas and metro and bus connections. It's actually quite a normal station, not specifically there for just the single venue. Still a good mention though!

The "New" Trafford is Trafford, Pennsylvania, USA. We are about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh. I love the All the Stations project you are doing, but why oh why when you are limited to 4 videos a week did you put out the trip to Old Trafford when we've already seen much of this before? Also i can understand getting the fast train up to Manchester, but why didn't you get the London Midland back to London, or change onto one so you could stop at so many more stations rather than whiz straight past so many? I guess you'll get many other opportunities to do the stations on this line as you travel up and down the country.
@AllTheStations
@AllTheStations 7 жыл бұрын
Matt Potter we've never seen Man Utd halt before, so it's an excellent reason for making a video about what is arguably the hardest station to visit in Britain! We then did exactly what you suggested - got a stopping service back via Congleton to Stoke rather than just get a fast train back from Manchester, and we included shots of all these stations in the video.

Up until quite recently, that's because it was. In fact, it used to be an extension of the Medway Valley Line (Strood to Tonbridge) and was run by old 508 units. It was only the franchise change in 2007 when Southern took over :)

Hiya Richard here from the video. Southeastern have an agreement with southern to provide train crew for the Redhill to London Bridge route. The agreement helps us (southeastern) When there are weekend engineering works or disruption, trains running via Tonbridge can be routed to run via Redhill and East Croydon and then into London Bridge and Charing Cross (currently not possible because of thameslink work and lack of crossover from low level to high level at London Bridge.) Driving the souther trains, enables us to maintain our route knowledge and competencies, as we have to pass over a route at least every 6 months or it will be taken off our route card.

No it's not. It's just slightly out of order - on purpose, because of the Manchester attacks.

could you go to the etihad stadium mertolink station and look around it.

Doubtful as it's a metrolink and not a mainline station.

Are they they only team with a dedicated Station just for them?
@jwb_
@jwb_ 7 жыл бұрын
I think they are now but a few clubs had dedicated halt stations previously. Boothferry Park in Hull, Vicarage Road in Watford and the Baseball Ground in Derby all had stations but these were all closed before the turn of the century.

Possibly. Several teams have stations that mainly serve their stadium (e.g. Newcastle and Sunderland have St. James and Stadium of Light stations on the Tyne and Wear Metro). Ashton Gate station was built to serve Bristol City's ground and was only open for football matches for some of it's existence but it's completely closed now.

Arsenal has a tube station named after them. Its called Arsenal. It the only station in the world to solely have the name of a football Club

Nope! Bordesley station is (unofficially) a dedicated halt for Birmingham City!

It isn't dedicated to just Arsenal football club though. I used it on Sunday when there wasn't a match at the stadium for example.

The video didn't really make this clear. Did you two have to stand outside Old Trafford for the entire length of the sportsball match, before you were allowed to get back on the train? If so, how come you didn't go looking for Manchester United's local castle/cathedral?
@stephenreardon2698
@stephenreardon2698 6 жыл бұрын
There is a separate video showing them using the tram on this trip. and as for Cathedrals/Castles, Old Trafford is a primarily a late nineteenth/early twentieth century industrial estate (once the world's largest) built next to the ship canal. Not exactly picture post card Britain.
