I just noticed that you only have 3.81K subscribers... I always thought you had 300K subscribers because your videos are of insanely high quality. I'm planning not to start out with violins but I'm watching this to learn as much as possible to make a Talharpa. Then I want to make a Vielle if I am successful at making the Talharpa not sound terrible. Planning to use gut strings.... I am partway through carving the mahogany top, and it's not glued together but one piece, so that simplifies a lot of it, being a big rectangle. Also using hide glue, but the titebond stuff in the tube. Is there any significant advantage to using the more traditional approach on the overall sound?

@@hellomate639 Thanks! We are getting there!
@MekwokStudio
@MekwokStudio Жыл бұрын
@@hellomate639 The biggest advantage is that if you use hide glue, you can "unglue" it later, but you can't do that with titebond. I heard there are people using titebond on guitars, but I'd prefer hide glue on acoustic instruments.

@@MekwokStudio Heh, instead of a Talharpa I actually am almost done making a lyre! It sounds a lot better than I thought it would sound. Classical guitar strings, but not nylon, rather gut and silk wound. I just have to glue the back on now (it press fits in, but it needs a little trimming and careful adjustment to be glued in the right spot).

Maybe the answer will be in Part 2 - I'm in Asia and for the most part the tools I can source within reasonable costs and delivery. What I have not yet found is a good source for wood - tonewood, blocks, etc. Yes it is possible to source from some worldwide suppliers but the shipping costs become very significant. Any alternative to this?
@MekwokStudio
@MekwokStudio Жыл бұрын
Yay, shipping is your biggest enemy beside taxes. There are no alternative If you are looking for European wood, because European wood is.. from Europe. But there are actually some tonewood on Alibaba and TaoBao that are not so bad; I’ve tried some, the maple is generally harder, and spruce is softer, compare to European wood.
