This album truly *is* a masterpiece. It manages to mix intimacy, frustration, melancholy, acceptance, and freedom all into one beautiful package. It's so impressive to see the amazing things George went on to do after living in John and Paul's shadows for so long. Also, just letting you know that you're perfectly valid for not including the Apple Jam part in the video. They're considered to be "bonus tracks" by George Harrison himself, so Hear Me Lord is the official end of the album.

Oh I was surprised that Jesse didn't do the jam, since he listened to Unfinished Music.

I'm 69 so I grew up with the Beatles so when they split a whole generation of kids who expected them to always be there were affected by it. So the obvious move was to follow them into their solo work. George's was exceptional in our eyes.

I can imagine Harrison's frustration at having been refused so many of his songs all this years by John and Paul ! The break up of the Beatles was undoubtedly the most beneficial for George, who was finally able to free himself from the ascendancy of Lennon and McCartney. Simply great album.

If you want to do a follow-up video on George's solo career, I'd recommend "33 1/3" album. It's an album that he wrote on much happier terms within his life and has some really fun songs. Also, on the matter of the four Beatles' perspective, you should really watch The Beatles Anthology and Get Back documentaries on your own time (I don't think you could react to these in YT, but it'd be great to hear your thoughts about these too).

Don't feel bad, Jesse. The song All Things Must Pass literally got me through 2020 and 2021! You can find footage of The Beatles rehearsing this tune on KZfaq, too! Just type in the song title and Beatles in the search bar and it will pop up. Also, Paul McCartney did a lovely live version of this song you can find on KZfaq. It was during a European concert and it's wonderful. I recommend checking out both versions.

Great reaction and review video! I'm glad you liked it so much, it is a truly great album. George only managed to get a couple of tracks on each Beatles album, and though it may have frustrated him at the time, it certainly paid off when they split because his first solo album was far superior to the other Beatles' solo albums, simply because they'd used their best stuff over the last few years in the group, and George had a wealth of material. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this. I'm also glad you skipped the ones you did at the end, because you reviewed all the best stuff on the album, and at an hour and fifteen minutes, it was long enough! I look forward to your next listen/review video, and particularly Band On The Run.

Speaking of Bob Dylan..... Since you like to read lyrics, Bob Dylan will blow your frickin' mind. The albums "Bringing it all Back Home" and "Highway 61 Revisited" would be a good place to start. 😃

Thanks Jesse. I hope you appreciate why we did not want you to do just the complication/greatest hits, but listen to the albums. Hope this makes you to do all of Georges albums (and travelling wilburys )) His next one (besides the live “concert for Bangladesh” album) is Living in the Material World (which is equal in quality to this). He only had 1 or 2 average albums, - not because of the lyrics more due the heavy religious flavour. So based of your reactions, you may like them. Band on the run will surprise you even more!!!! The soundscapes are on another level. Keep going! Thanks.

Such a thoughtful review, Jesse. I don’t know about this album being overrated but George was definitely underrated, but not by Paul and John. I love Paul but I believe he and John were actually threatened by George’s emerging song writing skills. Though I grew up a fan of The Beatles and solo Paul, I wasn’t alive at this time, so it’s just how I perceive it through my studies of the band. I just watched “George Harrison: Living in the Material World.” It’s interesting. He was inspirational, spiritual, reflective and thoughtful but also very flawed. (I still can’t grasp the whole wife swapping thing lol.) I think The Beatles Anthology gives great insight into George. He was actually funny as shit and definitely wasn’t as resentful of The Beatles as he let on. Very interesting guy. Bless him.

Jesse, this has to be your best review. This album has always been one of my favorite Beatles albums. Can you imagine, if the four could have worked out their differences, all their solo songs would have been Beatles records. They would have been number one forever and ever. This was a three album set, the last disk being the instrumentals you mentioned, and yes, everyone skips the last disk. I am very pleased you enjoyed this album as much as you did. Everyone should listen to this album. It truly is a masterpiece. Thanks again.

Between this album, Ram and Plastic Ono Band we can see the differences between John, Paul and George, but imagine if they had made a Beatles album or two with the songs from these albums. It would rival anything they'd ever done prior.

I prefer Olivia in If Not For You, and quite a few tracks after that are weaker for me. A lot of it is in the same kind of style, his vocal doesn't vary so much. If you buy into that style fully then you are likely to like it a lot. McCartney has more varied styles and vocals.

Yes, George was attacked in his Friar Park home on Dec 30 1999. It was downplayed in the press and he reportedly "made jokes" getting into the ambulance. However, he was stabbed about 40 times and suffered a collapsed lung. He almost died, so this "joking" was a misdirection, and many people, including his wife Olivia, believe that this attack precipitated his death from cancer in 2001 by weakening him. The song Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp is about the guy who built the house in 1889. Also the break-in at Paul's house that inspired She Came in Through the Bathroom Window was committed by Apple Scruffs. One girl went in through the window and then let the others in. So that's an interesting tie between these 2 back-to-back tracks. Oops, didn't mean to imply that George was attacked by an Apple Scruff. No, he was attacked by a guy suffering from schizophrenia who believed that Paul was a witch who could enter other people's minds the under the control of George, who was a demon and sorcerer.

I think Wah Wah is about The Beatles in general and maybe skews more towards John, based on when it was written. The song on this album that is more clearly about Paul is Run of the Mill. I have never heard Ringo blame Paul's criticism for him leaving. I think it's speculation based on the fact that Paul ended up playing drums on those tracks that Ringo missed and that they chose not re-dub them. Ringo defends his friend George by blaming Paul for George leaving. However, George's comments on the subject are a lot more nuanced.

That lawsuit over “my sweet lord” was such bs. I’m sure George had no intention of plagiarizing that song. It’s resemblance hardly warranted a cash settlement. Pure greed on the part of the publishing company.
@hmm3484
@hmm3484 2 жыл бұрын
What the heck does ‘subconscious plagiarism even mean? If it’s subconscious then you wouldn’t be aware of what you had done, right? A lot of nonsense. People who bleat about that try so hard to diminish George’s many accomplishments. The judge who made this ruling demoralized George and made him extremely tentative about writing after that. According to his first wife, he wouldn’t even allow the radio to be played in their house afterwards for fear that he “might” unknowingly copy from another song. (Listen to “This Song” which is a parody of this whole ridiculous ruling).
@beatmet2355
@beatmet2355 2 жыл бұрын
@@hmm3484 exactly. Music is for everyone. It’s like copyrighting music theory or the aeolian cadence. I once read classical composers would regularly transpose other composers’ music for alternate instruments. Like transposing a piano concerto for violin or some other instrument. Imitation being the highest form of flattery.
@Kieop
@Kieop Жыл бұрын
@@beatmet2355 True. You can't copyright chord progressions or any of the fundamentals of music. Paul used to worry about getting in trouble for "stealing" basslines from old rock standards in the early days, but no one cared even when he told the press, so it taught him what was copyrightable and what wasn't, which is why The Beatles didn't habitually get sued. A good Beatles example of what you describe -- re. classical composers -- is Lady Madonna. It is a variation on Bad Penny Blues. People listening to it can easily hear the similarity and influence. They say why wasn't Paul sued. Well, he wasn't sued because they weren't actually the "same" at all, they just evoked the same feel and they were both on the piano. But Come Together stole the tune and the first line from a Chuck Berry song and My Sweet Lord also took its entire tune from He's So Fine. That's what gets you in trouble. But listening to these tracks, they sound and feel very different from the songs they seem to copy. So really the opposite of Lady Madonna. Sound the same but are different vs sound different but are the same. Thank god Led Zeppelin won their recent suit, since the basis of that one was an arpeggio sequence using acoustic guitars. Yes, they sounded very similar (though they were not in fact the same) and certainly, it was likely they were exposed to the other song when they toured with that band, which could be argued as intent. But it would have set a very dangerous precedent if you could successfully own something as basic as an arpeggio.

It’s all downhill from here, Jesse! Lol George had the best albums of any of the solo ones I’ve heard, but you’ll probably find plenty to like besides this one. Cloud nine and ATMP, both by George, are dang near perfect albums, IMO. Paul had good ones, too, but he had a lot of “granny songs” that aren’t his strongest offerings. And John? His best music was before the breakup. Aside from a few singles and select album tracks, John just didn’t have much to offer during the seventies. At least he had some good songs on Double Fantasy. I’ve never really listened to Ringo’s stuff, so I can’t give my opinion on his material.

The repressed Beatle? Absolutely. It´s a pity (yes I wrote it on purpose) how was "difficult" that George's songs were in the Beatles albums, I mean, obviously he could have done it but they never never given enough space to do it. Nevertheless, we can enjoy the talent from George and appreciate his point of view. George Harrison never looked for fame and money, but to express his feelings and the way he saw the world and that´s relfected in this masterpiece. Finally I can say that the only good thing about the Beatles broke up it's that we could enjoy the masterpieces in their solo projects from those 4 monsters of the composition.

John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and McCartneys RAM were far superior. George’s All Things Must Pass blew me away initially, but hasn’t aged well for me, even after much of Spector’s reverb was removed. It’s a bit bloated (the 3rd “Jam” disc was wholly underwhelming.) Don’t agree with the revisionist idea that George was Lennon/McCartney’s equal, just suppressed. For me, I think his songwriting peaked with his ‘69 Beatles contributions, plus some of All Things Must Pass, several songs sprinkled over later albums. I thought his creation and work for the Traveling Wilburys 1st album was great. The thing I don’t think he still gets enough recognition for is his ‘slide’ guitar playing, which seemed to emerge fully-formed with the end of the Beatles. Beyond blues-based, his style was totally original with an ear that I’m guessing was fine-tuned by years of playing sitar, and pitch/fretting demands of that.

I kind of agree. I love a lot of the songs on All Things Must Pass but I can't listen to the album all the way through, it's just so overproduced. Everything is turned into some kind of sonic mush, it's hard to bear. In terms of George Harrison as a songwriter, I'd say he was more limited than John or Paul, a lot of his songs have the same kind of vibe while the works of John and Paul (especially Paul) are more varied and interesting. Then again, it's kind of unfair to always compare him to his brilliant bandmates.
