Greetings from Chicago, this is truly inspiring for fruit lovers, the roselle plant you have in pot, in Jamaica they use the flowers to make a sorrel drink, good for health and in India they make a chutney out of the leaves.

All that fruit, you can make smoothies, jams and so much more. In South Asia we make salsa with any fruit that is unripe and sour or medium ripe , we put in roasted crushed garlic, crushed green chilli, chilli flakes, coriander, salt and a tsp of mustard oil and eat as a snack. The ripe fruits we mash add chilli flakes, finely chopped coriander, salt, sugar or date molasses and boil , then spread on tray and dry in the hot weather to make fruit leather.

@The real life Fuitopia, great food forest! The custard apple dropping off might be due to lack of pollination. I saw on another video from India, they held a flower to the flowering custard apple once it bursts to pollinate. The farmer said that if hand pollination is not done the fruits drop off. I assumed that was because it was a roof top garden and the ecosystem wasn’t fully developed. Something to look into. Super inspired.

Your climate is much like the SF bay area here in California. You might have hotter summers. Looked familiar..although that Papaya was larger than I got out of one that grew three years and THEN DIED with fruit one winter. A long wait..then foiled! You might try Pineapples,Coffee too. Lychee..I just never tried it. I tell you..plant a few more Mangoes..they take like 5 or 6 years to get where they can fruit and grow at the same time..but at 12-14' tall you want more than just one tree.. plant a few and you have a nice harvest without any one tree being very large.
@RealLifeFruitopia
@RealLifeFruitopia 5 жыл бұрын
I have tried pineapple, it's just not worth the wait. Coffee works well, I even got beans one year but not enough space for any real production. Tropical papaya is definitely out of the question, unless fully protected or enclosed. Mango is borderline, some die the first year whilst others survive with one fruit after 3-5 years. Currently I have one established Glenn that fruited once and a young Kensington Pride in a protected spot in ground. I also have a Valencia Pride, a dwarf KP and R2E2 all in pots. I've killed over a dozen mango trees in 8 years, still learning as I know they will grow and fruit under ideal conditions in my climate. Lychee and longan will fruit here too but again, under ideal conditions, lots of trials, time and money. I'm also very excited to be working with American Paw Paw, Wax Jambu, Sapodilla and Acerola when spring returns in a couple of months. Thanks for your observations.

hey man do you think if you pull all the mulch away from the papaya it might make it through winter as the soil should get some sunlight and dry out a bit? @veganchiefwarrior6444
@veganchiefwarrior6444 6 жыл бұрын
awsum, theres also the cover crop method, if theres roots of plants in and all around the papaya that grow in winter youd think theyd help aerate the soil and increase drainage and use some water n stuff, its all turned into a bit science experiment for me lol you need atleast 3 papayas next to each other to try different things on maybe, you could also try completely replacing the soil with somethin like quartz sand, and then u could also try piling the mulch so high that the ground doesn't even get any water.. too many bloody things you can try lol I'm in the same situation
@veganchiefwarrior6444
@veganchiefwarrior6444 6 жыл бұрын
another suggestion, everyone plants papayas on mounds, so theres plant on a mound, scrape mulch away, replacing soil with pure sand, or mixture of all those should do it lol

If you want more fruit from the custard apple or other annonas you’ll have to hand pollinate it and since you have 2 , cross pollination is recommended since you probably don’t have its native pollinator insect like her in California also. Anyway I don’t know if you hand pollinate yours.

I think some day the white sapote will go on the market again. I remember buying the fruit from Coles many years ago, in fact in the eighties and then no more. Now with trade agreement with Indonesia signed, I think in a short time, we will be able to taste a good variety of tropical fruits that are so elusive to us unless we go to tropical countries during the fruit season to enjoy the bountiful fruit harvest. Some of these wonderful fruits are gifted through nature's bounty from the jungles. Hope our government will move forward quickly to remove the backwardness of blind, selfish, nationalistic restrictions which deny all Aussies from enjoying a better life in their own country cuisine-wise.

Any soil I use just works, so long as it drains well. Papaya just hasn't worked here, I've tried for years. Babaco is on another level, tastes like soapy sour wine when ripe but good for stews when green. I never water the bananas, just add heaps of mulch and kitchen compost. Passion fruit vine was bought only 2 weeks ago, it's going in a bigger pot soon. Temperatures here are still close to summer, most things will continue growing until the end of May. With only 3C more over winter, I would be able to grow mango, papaya, rollinia and even jackfruit. Some day I might move north to see these babies growing. So far I'm very pleased with the results.

thankyou for the replies man muchly appreciated, did you say you use a cactus mix for your potted fruit trees? ive been trying to use compost to avoid having to fertilise you see but it might be that it should only be on top and not in the actual soil I have a little side by side test going on and so far the plant in the good old garden soil with a thin layer of sifted compost on top is looking the best.. I started off in soil and it was working ok I just thought there must be better options so here I am haha

Why not in a Greenhouse?
@RealLifeFruitopia
@RealLifeFruitopia 5 жыл бұрын
A typical home greenhouse is usually unheated, therefore the tree wouldn't survive with the night time temperatures. Also rambutan is a large tree, you would need a greenhouse as large as your home.

Custard apple drops fruit when temp goes below 55F.
@RealLifeFruitopia
@RealLifeFruitopia 6 жыл бұрын
Temperatures at night are always below 55F in winter, but the fruit still hang on until the last week of winter or early spring before dropping undeveloped. Maybe the tree hasn't fully acclimatized.
@greenblood3708
@greenblood3708 6 жыл бұрын
First time custard apple fruit gets exposed to 55F tree rejects it. Once temp starts going up tree resumes normal growth and drops dead fruit. I have the same issue with my soursops that set fruit late in Fall. You should try grow anonas that ripen their fruit before winter i.e. sugar apple, atemoya or rollinia. Poshte holds on to its fruit down to near frost temps.

your papaya dies not from cold but root rot that it develops in wet cold soil. You need to grow it in well drained soil on a mound. Never in clay soil
