I’ve got several some as bonsai and some in larger planters variegated and solid. Found a sad dry leggy Schefflera a couple weeks ago sitting on the roadside amongst some storm debris. (Hurricane Sally roughed us up a good bit) anyway the once homeless Schefflera is now on its way to being a nice bonsai. Good luck with yours👍

Can you propagate a stem that has no leaves on it? I had my schefflera that looks like the one on the right, lose most of its leaves from heat damage….lost my AC in summer for a few weeks. She’s growing some new leaves, so overall still healthy, but wondering what to do with all the stems that are bare.

Question: I have a scheflerra actinofolia I've had for about 5-6 years first four years or so it grew beautifully. But the last year or so all of the new leaves don't spread out like fans as they normally would. They come out folded back on their stems and stay that way. What is wrong with it and can I remedy the problem?
@reptiplantworks2294
@reptiplantworks2294 Жыл бұрын
It's hard to say exactly as there can be alot of variables that effect leaf growth but usually if a plant has grown larger with more leaves it often needs more light in order to sustain the extra growth so upping the lighting might help, however if the plant hasn't had a repot with new within the last year or two this might also be the issue as soil eventually runs out of nutrients after a year or two, repoting in spring or autumn is recommended not winter as the plant is mostly dormant in winter and is best not disturbed, the only other thing that usually causes this sort of issue is pests so look closely for mealybugs or scale, if you find any you can use a product called white oil spray to treat it, best of luck with your plant.

Any tips on stems that grown downward? I care for an elderly lady and have been helping her with her plants.. her umbrella tree looks like it’s having a bad hair day lol. I brought a wooden stake and propped it up better with some twine.. and I’ve been trying to manipulate the downward-growing stems with floral wire and point them in an upward direction.. am I doing this right?
@reptiplantworks2294
@reptiplantworks2294 3 жыл бұрын
Usually when this happens it's because there isn't enough above lighting as plants grow towards the light and if the sideways lighting is more intense than above lighting this can happen, above lighting is difficult indoors as most people don't have sky lights lol but proping it up with a wooden stake is a good start and if you aren't able to move it somewhere where there's above lighting or mount a grow light above it the only other option is to rotate it every week so the growth is more even but yeah once these trees get bigger it's hard keeping them standing up straight indoors best of luck though 🙂

My husband brought home his giant office plant that was already established like that, four stalks 3ft in length with many various other stalks too but those big ones only one was kind of going upwards all the rest were were going sideways and still are 7 years later and we just moved into a much smaller house where this guy now fills up my art studio (he wasn’t a fan of the unheated full sun no heat in WIsconsin sunroom over winter-but didn’t drop a leaf unlike in my bay window at my last house it would drop every leaf each winter and I’d put out on East facing patio up against the house and it returned full and bushier than before. But NOW I must prune fella back. I should have pruned those back when I got them but I was too chicken. I was hoping your video would address that. Because they do get beefy and out of control and that’s why people get rid of them. I have no room for his monstrosity at the new place. He is always up in my business because I’m stepping over one of his many parallel limbs reaching to all four corners of the room😂.

If you cut off the top of an actual tree, will the tree you cut from continue to grow? Or will it grow more off the side of the tree? I had one with 3 trees in one pot, let them grow outside on a covered porch over the summer, 2 took off and are 2ft tall, the 3rd turned brown from the bottom and is working it’s way up the tree. I’m not sure what to do with it currently. None of the remaining leaves on it look healthy enough to propagate as they have all begun to wilt. Should I try to dig or pull it completely out of the pot? I don’t want the dead plant matter to rot in the pot and affect the 2 healthy trees in the pot. But I was wondering if I did propagate the tops of the healthy trees in the future, how will the trees continue growing, straight up or out to the sides. I may try to propagate a healthy leaf to replace the tree that died. Just never a lot of info about the plant (scheflerras in particular, and they are currently my favorite) after you’ve cut it.

Try putting the cutting in soil and then put the whole thing in a big zip lock bag and blow air into it before closing! Im aware they can live in full sun i have ones outside myself however im refering to umbrella trees being kept as indoor plants and moving an indoor plant straight into full sun outside usually is to much of an extreme change to fast for them to handle however I have both species outside and both are also growing well because I put them outside in late winter so it wasn't to hot straight away and they've been able to adjust as the seasons warm in time saying that I've had them burn and dry up in the past when I haven't done this.

A node is on the main stem where leaves grow from or roots can grow if cut but as far as I know the butt end of a leaf stem isn't technically a node which is why leaf propagation only works sometimes but I could be wrong 😁
