Hi all, in this video I tell you about my experience with CFA Certificate in ESG Investing. I passed this exam roughly two years ago when it was still offered by CFA Society of the UK. I found the materials of this exam quite useful and therefore I'm sharing with you my preparation strategy and whether it turned out to be useful for my career.

Hi Marie, nice breakdown of the certificate. I'm planning to enroll soon. Would it be right to say that the main difficulty is the amount of information to retain? So if you have a good memory it should be relatively easy to pass? As for the curriculum, could you specify how many books & pages there are to cover? Thanks

I am working for an asset manager that if heavily focused on sustainability / responsible investment but it's not an impact fund. I did this certification only after I accepted the offer so it didn't matter at the time I was doing interviews. But it certainly helped in my day to day tasks:)

Hi Marie, Appreciate the insight, I have no relevant financial work experience, only professional services in Sales based roles. If I was to obtain CFA ESG and also CFA level 1, do you think that would be enough to land a role as an ESG investment analyst or impact investing analyst? Thanks

Hello, I would aim at getting more suitable professional experience alongside preparing for CFA ESG certificate and CFA Level I exam. Those certificates alone might not be sufficient to fully substitute lack of professional experience. For ESG-focused roles, getting ESG certificate might be a good and relatively easy option to highlight you knowledge/interest in the field of ESG. I would also speak with people from the industry/company you want to work for to find out what other requirements they might have for the positions you mentioned.

Hey Marie, greetings from HK! I'm currently preparing for the test. But I have difficulty finding the bullet point as mock test material,etc. is insufficient. How do I know on which point I should focus in each chapter?

Yeah, that's a pity that there are no summary materials for this exam (at least I'm not aware of them). I think focus on key definitions which you meet throughout the textbook, no need to remember every small detail. Also, if I were to take this exam again, I would look at the mock exam and see what definitions they are mostly asking for. E.g., if the question is about common law, I would double check the definition for civil law (I don't remember exactly the Qs from my mock exam from the book, I just want to provide an example). And the same with every other Q in the mock exam. And the week before the exam try to read again case studies, that's quite important

Hey! No, CFA ESG certificate doesn't require a lot of calculations or financial formulas. It's quite theoretical. The usefulness of this certificate really depends on what you are doing on a day to day basis / what you would like to do in the future / how often you interact with ESG data of any kind. If your exposure to ESG content is limited and you wouldn't want to switch to more ESG-focused roles, I would look for other programs/certificates. Hope it helps!

Its way costly for a student for a ESG certification was it worth it? Should a Grad last year student do it? I doing CMA(USA) in my last year would you suggest it for me?

Compared to CFA Level I-II-III CFA ESG Certificate is relatively affordable. If you want to work in an ESG-related field or in portfolio management, I would advise to do it. It doesn't require a lot of time to prepare too
