This is hard to write, but if it saves another cat then it'll be worth it. I found my first cat, Dawn, in a bush. She was so small she fit in one hand. She would be a part of my life for 14 years. I never had her spayed, that was a big mistake, but I also kept a very close eye on her when she was outside, so she never had kittens, I thought that was good enough for not having her spayed. I missed the signs of her breast cancer until the tremor burst. By then it was too late. The vet told me if I had her spayed when she was a kitten, her chances of breast cancer would have been very very small. She didn't deserve to die that like that, and it will haunt me for the rest of my life. If you love them, spay them.

Very sorry your cat and you went through this. From your word's and the heartfelt message, it's obvious how much you loved your companion - it - also is something you can see differently in the future (the pain of blaming yourself). Many cat's pass on younger than 14 through accident's or genetic disease - sound's like you gave your cat a lifetime of care, security and love... so much more than countless other's. My biggest (I don't like the word "advice" and hesitate using the term) BUT start replacing (re-wiring) the memories that you spend time with - her time of illness and passing to the times where you and her experienced joy, fun, play and that SPECIAL feeling of connecting with another species who can't speak your language verbally yet looking into each other's eye's -everything was said and understood. You did what you thought was right at the time, after all it is the natural state of an animal "not" to be surgically altered, not many would have known of risk's other than pregnancy - now - Dawn and you are helping other's learn and possible saving a cat from dying even younger. You saved her from a bush as a tiny kitten, facing great odd's of a short stressful life or painful life as a stray... to now, even after her having a wonderful life of feeling loved/appreciated, she is helping other's - possibly many other's. Thank You for sharing. PS - I think of my companion "Chocolate Bar" - little black cat who moved in with me as a kitten after being abused by alcoholic neighbours. Had him 21 years and my time with him when I look back over 52 year's of my life - my relationship with him is one of the highlight's of my life. Never forget - know she loved you and she does not blame you - she is too grateful for having had "you" as her person - she felt VALUED. Best wishes from another animal lover.

Sorry for your loss in that way, I think we all can relate to the original post - and have those moment's in our own live's where we wish we knew more or were able to see through the vale of day to day life that fog's our eyes - it's part of our human experience and we must try to lift the weight we place on ourselves when looking back in hindsight. It is difficult to read/hear someone describing that pain so well - it remind's us of our own short coming's. We must try to balance the scale when those painful self judgement's are top of mind more than the gratitude we feel for the experience of having that life with us for a time. Most of us are not expert's at diagnosing illness - especially in our non-verbal friend's. That little (but beautiful) soul in our furry companion would forgive you for not being all knowing - work at forgiving yourself as you would other's. Thank You both for sharing. @@lawrencescales9864

Please don't feel too bad. My cat was spayed, though she first had kittens (I can't remember if it was one or two litters, back in the 90s), and she still developed a breast tumor. Treatment would cost too much and the outcome wasn't guaranteed, so the vet said to just watch and see if she was in pain. She lived with it for about 3 years but eventually it grew large and she was uncomfortable. It was hard to know the right time to say good-bye, but she stopped eating and I had to tempt her with fancy food and eventually just tuna. One night she just looked at me and I knew. We went in first thing the next morning and I was able to be with her. I bawled my eyes out but it was the right thing to do. If a cat is still eating and going about their normal activities, you can't be blamed for not knowing something is wrong. I think you did the best you could, and she had a good life! ❤

My biggest mistake has been NOT being a strong enough advocate for my cats. There have been signs of illness that I have communicated to the vet, but that are ignored or not followed up on. experience has shown me over and over that I need to restate things I think are wrong and keep pushing with questions. For example, my elderly cat experienced a single seizure. She later developed high BP and lost an eye because of bleeding into the eye. Had I known then to ask about checking her BP and glucose, those two conditions could have been delayed, avoided, or treated more quickly. My best advice is NOT to be afraid to push an issue or question the vet. And doing your own research can be helpful too, so that you have info and facts to backup your concerns.

My experiences with vets have gotten worse and worse over the past 20 years. I can only assume it's just like the problems with the human healthcare system. I have to psyche myself up and go into either of these settings prepared to state what I need and then stand my ground against questioning and attacks. They don't seem to have time or interest in listening, and really engaging with you. Occasionally I have a small positive experience, but the majority of interactions are stressful and frustrating--though of course I stay civil and turn up the patience knob REALLY high so I don't explode. My last experience a week ago was with a vet tech who was loud, overbearing, demeaning, aggressive...it was either "my way or the highway" with her, so obviously I won't be back. I left feeling abused. I wasn't trying to break any laws, but my 18-year-old cat doesn't need another rabies shot (I'm sure he's had 10 in his lifetime), and I can't afford $600 worth of lab tests which apparently are "required" for him to continue on the blood pressure medication that's keeping him from going blind. Looking back, I felt I just needed someone to kindly interact with me and discuss options in a reasonable way. Listening to her at the time, it seemed like only rich people that are willing to "toe the line" in every respect can be pet owners. Otherwise your only option is to "surrender" your pet to an organization that decides what is best for the animal (as if those aren't overwhelmed already!). I did not detect one bit of sympathy, understanding, or respect in this horrible woman. The vet came in briefly to do the exam, but said very little and left. I thought she would come back to give more advice and answer my questions, but no, only the vet tech, busily printing out estimates and waiting for me to sign them so they can just GET THEIR MONEY. I was in the exam room for almost 90 minutes, and most of that time was waiting while the tech disappeared for long periods of time, usually without explanation. Clearly THEY, the glorious medical people, are the important ones in this situation, and we mere humans and animals can just sit and wait. So wrong.

Excellent point. My cat was being treated for a stubborn UTI. First Vet was great, gave her an antibiotic shot and a shot for pain. Two weeks later, I had to take her back. The second Vet didn't want to give an antibiotic, but I insisted. And I asked for some pain meds for the cat. She recommended pills, since they were a lot cheaper than a shot. I said OK. Went home, gave the first pill. In about 30 minutes, my cat's behavior changed drastically. She was hiding, hissing, spitting and crying in pain. It was now the weekend, so I couldn't take her back. My cat suffered terribly for 24 hours straight. I made an appointment with the Vet who owns the clinic and asked him what happened. He said, the "pain" medication was an NSAID. It can cause death in cats because it eats a hole in their digestive tract. (In the past, she was prescribed Tramadol, not an NSAID.) I should have trusted my instincts, because I never felt good about the 2nd Vet and avoided her whenever possible. My lesson: Trust my insticts about Vets (!) and ALWAYS ask exactly what medication is being prescribed and what side effects may be caused.

My biggest mistake was adopting brother & sister cats of different sizes . While the two were very trusting, comfortable & affection with each (sleeping & grooming), the male was a bit larger (several pounds heavier as well) and could easily overpower the smaller one. As a result, the smaller cat was constantly treated like a toy to stalk & pounce upon. This left her in constant state of hypervigilance, afraid of every noise or sudden movement. While her larger brother could relatively relax whenever he chose, the poor little girl was subjected to ambushes every night of her life. If I could do it all over again, I would adopt 2 cats that were relatively the same size.

I have a big boy and a little girl right now with many of the same problems. Fortunately she growls, hisses, and swats back most of the time. But if she runs, he's right after her. Honestly I know he just wants to play, but she takes everything as an attack. She was here first and he's a stray who adopted me. Most of the time they just coexist. It's probably my fault for not playing with him more...as if I don't have enough to do!

My first cat that my wife and I loved, he was a cat but as affectionate and bonded like a dog, very smart too, ended up dying of kidney failure. We waited too long to put him down and had planned on putting him down after a planned weekend of spoiling him when we had a death in the family. We had to rush out of town and had our friends check in on our cats while we were away. Had to come back home early when we heard he could not move from the chair. Do not wait too long with kidney disease, once there breath starts to stink due to toxins in the blood, it's time. He was yowling in pain periodically on our way to the emergency vets. I will never let one of my cats go thru that again, so word of warning for those dealing with kidney failure, even though they are eating for you, don't let them go too long. Ask your vet when is the appropriate time to euthanasia, it's emotionally painful but the right thing to do.

Biggest mistake with my first cat was when I was 14. Back then I knew zero about cats and information wasn't as accessible as it is now. I bought him in a shop and brought him home without any preparations or knowledge. Eventually my mother persuaded me to give him to my neighbours friend that could provide him with a better quality of life. I was just not responsible enough back then and that shop owner should not have sold a pet to a child without an adult present to authorize it. I've learned to make a point to research on all topics whenever I see something new in my kittens or they're about to have something done at the vet. I also have a list of questions I take with me each time I visit with them on what will happen on the day and also anything else I am curious about. I don't hesitate to call my vet for advice if something worries me. I would rather be wrong than miss a sign. All things unfortunately I regret not doing back when I had Chico. Information is power.

Just a comment about cat trees. I replaced an old cat tree with a new one from PetSmart. It had been sitting outside and a friend picked it up for me. The next day, I noticed an odd smell. It came from the carpeting on the tree. I (unwisely) figured it would go away, because PetSmart would never sell a toxic product, right? My cat and I both developed serious respiratory problems. I ended up paying over $$$$ to Vets and my own doctor for medical treatments. During this time, a manager at the local store admitted they had several trees on display that smelled strongly of chemicals. Her corporate office, however, told me to "prove it!" and refused a refund. The cat tree went to the trash. Needless to say, I've never shopped there again. Be very careful what you buy. Other countries that manufacture products for the US don't necesarily work under consumer protection laws.

I would love to buy the litter robot but it just won't work with our two cats. We spent hundreds of dollars on beautiful Modkat boxes and one of our cats refused to use the box correctly because he was used to a big open box. We got the XL boxes and we tried them with an open top and an open front and both and he would just manage to pee in between the liner and the box or he would balance himself and pee outside the box. We eventually bought a large sterilite box and cut an opening in it and we use that. It's very big, we can put three to four inches of litter in it and it solved the problem. It isn't lovely, it isn't pretty and it isn't a litter robot but it works. I would love to not have to scoop the litter two or three times a day and have a litter robot do it but I don't think the cat could adapt to it and I don't want to stress him out.

My biggest mistake has been using my hands to play with my cat when she was a kitten. Now, even when trying to get her attention with a toy like a ribbon on a stick, she'll often ignore the toy completely and just stare at my hand to hunt it down and attack it. She also attacks my arms a lot, too. Part of it is how I played with her when she was young. Part of it is an extremely chaotic first 6 weeks she had. And part of it is just that she wakes every day actively choosing violence. Getting her seen at the vet is a whole-day trial since even on gabapentin she will try attacking the vet through the carrier. She has to be anesthetized just to get vaccinated. She's 6 years old now, so I've been having them take blood for testing whenever she's there since she's anesthetized anyway. Might as well get as much done as possible since we have so few chances to. So far her health has been perfect, other than her throwing up her food right after eating a few times a week. The vet hasn't found anything wrong with her health, though, so the only thing I've been able to do for that is just find a food that she vomits up the least.

I think another common mistake is getting only one kitten rather than multiple and I regret ignoring that advice. I adopted a kitten and ended up adopting an older cat a few months later. Biggest Mistake: Adopting a cat at 8 weeks old. Just because they are able to live without nursing doesn't mean they have learned everything they need to know. My two cats now were 13-14 weeks old at adoption and are the most well behaved cats I've ever known (adopted 3 years apart too) they know not to use their claws on people or furniture, they don't wake me up at night, just so many common behaviors I believe can be solved by letting them learn from their mother and siblings longer.

Pay attention to facilitating cats' water intake by having at least 2 bowls (stainless steel or glass) of water available in areas of high circulation. Wash them with soap and fill them with clean water every day. One of them can be a fountain (needs to be kept clean, water changes every couple of days or so). Also, you should give your cat wet food at least once a day, and you can add a bit of hot water to it. Finally, ypu can give your cat homemade meat broth.

I see conflicting info on how cats get water. Some say mostly from wet food intake. Some say a "moving water source" like a fountain. Even fewer say water bowls. I'm getting a transplanted cat, former owner passed away. Told this cat is a dry food eater. I have a water fountain for her. Will also try leaving a bowl. Am not going to free feed. But I guess I can free water, changing it regularly.

@@mettamorph4523 You should use all possible options simultaneously as much as possible: wet food with a bit of warm water, multiple bowls, a water fountain and red meat or white meat homemade broth. And definitely it seems cats are not keen of having their water next to their food. I used to have a stainless steel fountain by their food bowls and they would drink from it, but once I placed an additional glass water bowl in a more central location, they abandoned the fountain and started drinking from the bowl.

One "mistake" I made with my last pair of kittens (rescued from a feral litter in my backyard) was not socializing them sufficiently. I didn't plan getting them, so I couldn't choose a good time for new kittens, and it coincided with a very busy season at work and previously planned social obligations and they just weren't exposed to enough people and experiences. This led to my having "invisible cats," who would vanish when company came. They were perfectly fine and engaging with me, but I would do things much differently now.

One thought for a mistake: not providing/exposing a cat to a variety of different brands of cat food. In my mind, cats don’t want to eat the same food every single day. I change things up always. I’ve tried many different brands on the market (Royal canin, weruva, nulo, made by nacho, iams, fancy feast) and get my cats many different proteins: (beef, Turkey, duck, venison, rabbit, whitefish, salmon, chicken, you name it). Some are a hit, some are a miss, others my cats give a ‘meh’. This may sound like it’s overboard but I kinda go overboard with my cats 😂. The food they don’t like I give to the stray cats that I’ve adopted, spayed and neutered and now care for full time. they’ll eat everything and anything and nothing goes to waste 🐈

My biggest mistake as a cat owner was not properly introducing our youngest cat to the oldest when we brought him home as a kitten. The 2 cats only tolerate each other and sometimes the bigger male cat chases the female older cat around and I have to get the spray bottle out. I wish we had taken more time to introduce them slowly, and they might have turned out to be friends.

It sounds like you were a wonderful cat guardian. You should perhaps get another cat or two. A pair of bonded siblings is best because then they always have a companion. We adopted ours from the local shelter just over a year ago. They were 4 months old, bonded siblings. With our prior cat who died a year ago in March, we fed him great quality kibble because that's what we were told to do. He started having inflammatory issues and we swapped to wet food but it probably cost him a year or two of his life. He made it to almost 18 but I miss him and it still has the power to make me cry. It's so important to feed our cats good healthy wet food. They don't have the biological drive to drink a lot of water and they get their hydration from their food in the wild. Good wet food, activity, clean litter box, keep them indoors unless we have a closed in catio area and they will live long and be healthy. There aren't many things that are better than happy healthy cats. They make for happy healthy humans. (I can't imagine anyone declawing their cat. It should be illegal in the US as it is illegal in most countries and provinces. It is an obscenity and should not be done.)

I gotta say I'm wondering if having a cat isn't really wonderful. I'm getting my first cat, to save her from being put down really. I'm going to be a diligent owner but part of me is wondering if it's going to be like marriage and child rearing and quite frankly, sex. Everyone holds back the REAL truths. Marriage can suck, children can suck, sex often is unsatisfying. So I am entering this arena wondering if this is another big lie. I will see. Will I do all the right things and get no love in return. Will she love my roomie more than me even though I do the heavy lifting. Will we just occupy the same house but not connect. Will she just cost me time and money and not improve my well-being. Is this a big lie about pet ownership. I frown at the "pet parents" label. It's so self congratulatory. A pet is a responsibility. They should be trained with love. Not just cuddled and recorded for video cred. I dunno. I'm in for the ride.
@Kyarrix
@Kyarrix 9 ай бұрын
@@mettamorph4523 I don't consider myself a pet owner or a pet parent. Guardian, perhaps? Owner carries the wrong connotation for me. I don't care about video cred, if someone has cats for that reason then they have them for the wrong reasons. As far as is it a lie, no, it's not. But neither is it all fun and games. There are behavior problems, there are illnesses, there is the expense, like anything in life it isn't going to be all positives. I don't mind the expense. I don't mind the occasional behavioral problems because they are solvable. If your cat goes outside the litter box there's a reason, it's usually a medical reason and you should take your cat to the vet right away. If medical issues are ruled out then it could be a litter box issue, the litter box could be too small or the litter you picked might be something the cat doesn't enjoy using. Or they might have an allergy to it or it might bother them. Each cat is an individual. Some are lap cats and some are more independent. Learn as much as you can. Feed your cat a healthy diet primarily wet food. Provide your cat with a clean litter box, scoop it at least twice a day. Fresh water in a glass or ceramic bowl or a fountain and change it twice a day. Provide your cat with activities, places where it can be above the floor, cat trees, walkways, places where it can feel safe. Interact with your cat, get toys and have play time every day. There are lots of wand type toys with small toys at the end that can simulate hunting. Do this every evening before you feed them their dinner. We do this every night at about 9:00 p.m. and then feed them dinner afterwards. It's impossible to know in advance if the cat you are adopting will be your perfect cat. Every cat I've gotten has come from a shelter. One lived until she was 17, the other until 18 and the two we have now are one year and 4 months old, they are bonded siblings. If you can have two that's better for the cat. Cats do better with a companion. That way they are never truly alone, someone to sleep next to, to groom, to do cat things with. If you can't or can't right now, bear it in mind for the future. It is especially important with kittens that they not be the only kitten in a household. If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer. * One of my two cats is laying on my bed right now purring up a storm. He's a very strange boy, his brother is a more typical cat and he is weird but the most lovable cat ever. He spends part of the day under my blanket because that's where he feels safe. He does all the other normal cat things but he startles easily. I hope over time he'll get past it. We are building them a catio on the deck outside. I wish I could share pictures here not for cred but to show you what two very happy cats look like. His brother just joined him and they are grooming each other. One more thing, you mentioned training. Training, yes but never with shouting and never with physical violence. Jackson Galaxy is a good resource for training cats he has lots of videos on various topics.

Ah yes, the dreaded kibble. I have a new adoptee, and weaning her off the kibble, gradually. She is not a fan of most of the wet foods I have given her, but I found one that she does like. She also liked the air-dried meat, which is a great alternative to kibble. I hate the myth that kibble is good for teeth. @@davinasquirrel7672 I hate that myth also. People use it as an excuse to feed their cats kibble. What brand of what food does your new adoptee like? Our two like Feline Natural Lamb and Feline Natural Lamb and Salmon. They also like freeze dried raw nuggets and one of them will consent to eat Rawz Turkey and Salmon pate. They were fed Royal Canin at the shelter when they were kittens, they were given free choice of the dry kitten food and wet food twice a day. One of them still loves Royal Canin kitten food and even though he's not a kitten anymore we give him a little bit of it every day as a treat, he loves it so much (he isn't overweight and is a fussy eater). It doesn't represent more than 5% of his calories so I'm okay with it for the meantime. They also like Nulo pouches. Those are not great because of the waste involved in packaging each meal in its own pouch but the food itself is a very loose hydrating creamy mousse. It's about 60 calories for one pouch and they get one each in the morning. In the afternoon if they're hungry they get a little bit of wet food or a couple of freeze dried nuggets and they get their Feline Natural in the evening. They are extremely well nourished little goblins. We are almost done building them and 8x10 enclosed catio on the deck, I hope they enjoy it. I want them to be able to be outside but safely.

I also was not aware of the dental pain I had just gotten my new kitty 4 1/2 years old. And she came with dry food and she was not eating it and all day long and she just wouldn't eat it and so I found a couple of cans of wet food that I had from my other cat that I no longer had. So I put that down for her and she ate it right up the web food I said what she just doesn't like dry food. So I started giving her wet food and I happen to have this coupon when I got this rescue Kitty for a free checkup so I took her in for her freetrack checkup and I'm so glad I did I thought she was fine and they looked in her mouth and they said she had an abscess she had to have two teeth pulled and she had already lost he's on the other side and she has horrific teeth problems so and she loves dry food but she just can't chew it. So glad I took her in with that free coupon I never thought that she had teeth problems I've had cats my whole life I'm 80 years old never had a cat with bad teeth and especially not a young four-year-old cat with rotten teeth and that abscess was very hard to get rid of even after they pulled her tooth did surgery I had to take her back in for more antibiotics to get rid of it she had a horrendous looking mouth he said. But I wanted her checked out totally I love this cat and I had to do all kind of tests on her I had him to do kidney function test and diabetes test I spent $1,000 on that cat making sure she was okay. And the main reason I wanted her kidneys checked as she's a water guzzler I have automatic waterer a little Fountain and she drinks tons and tons of water I literally clean her litter box three to four times a day she pee so much and they said her kidneys are fine she's just a water drinker guess she loves the water fountain so everybody out there get your cat's a little water fountain she loves it but anyways I have to take her in regularly for teeth cleaning her teeth are so bad and I would not have known that had I not had that free coupon to have her checked out and I'm 80 years old and I missed it and I've had cats my whole life they just don't complain she sits on my lap everyday loves to be petted never complains about anything she does miss the dry food though so maybe every couple of days I have some really good dry food. One that you suggested. Tiki cat carnivore I think it's called but she can't chew it so I the pieces are too big so I smash smash him up with a hammer so they're like half the size chinchou if that way once in awhile I give her that if I don't break them up with a hammer she swallows them whole and throws up if I break him up with a hammer she doesn't throw it up but I only give you the dry food every few days mainly she's on a really good wet cat food she eats Iams wet and Sheba. The only wet food she likes. But I know it's so much better for her some of the dry food for her every few days for a little treat. And as for treats I give her the wet treats because she can't chew the dryer again had bought the bag of dry treats for her and I use my pill cutter to cut them in half because otherwise she swallows them whole and if I cut them in half she can chew in a little bit her teeth are really bad and she lost both of the big molars to the front teeth and one on the other side and three of them were gone before I even got her and I didn't even know it. So watch your cat's teeth watch all they eat. She will not let me brush her teeth I bought this very expensive toothpaste to cost me $30 every once in awhile I'll put a little on my finger try to rub it around on her teeth to see if it helps a little bit. And I bought water additive that the vet suggested add to her water it's supposed to help with her teeth somehow. And I saw the other message on line here that's helping me out a lot thank you for doing this letting us all tell our mistakes so we can learn from them and another lady suggested plaqueoff and oratene gel so thank you for putting that on there and I'm going to look for that thank you for doing this for us so we can help each other out with our mistakes I love this channel❤

And I had the scratch marks to show for it. I'm happy to say other than the occasional misstep or someone deciding the fastest way out of my arms is clawing over my shoulder instead of jumping down. . . I am scratch free. The occasional one from an accident doesn't bother me, but I would have several at a time for a while. #3 is an issue I will always be so frustrated with. So often it seems like people just refuse to take the time and effort to make sure they are feeding the right amount. Filling a bowl and walking away is NOT good pet parenting. Personally I don't even like automatic feeders because if you have multiple cats you never know who is eating what or how much. And microchip feeders are not infallible. They are certainly better options than a food bowl filled every few days. . .but I personally am always going to advocate for supervised mealtimes if at all possible. @jennie9
@jennie9 9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, even when they get checked before a surgery, they sometimes don't make it. One of my cats died in March due to a bad reaction to the anaesthetic during a dental surgery. She was at the vet a month earlier and nothing was wrong with her. They did a routine blood test before the surgery and it came back clear. She'd had the same anaesthetic during her spay surgery and there were no issues. This time, her heart stopped and they couldn't revive her. A necropsy showed no medical issues. It was just a random reaction to the drug. I'm sorry for your loss. I know what a shock it is too lose a pet that way.

I have 3 cats and 4 litterboxes. They are on differet areas of my small place. One of them is a cheaper electronic box (i wish i could afford a better one) and i clean them all multiple times a day. One of my cats has ibs and he sees the vet evey 6 weeks. His poop is constant diarrhea now and there is nothing we can do about it. Multiple cleanings are a must here.

Our vet thought that vitamin d would stimulate his hunger. Turned out he had cancer. The emergency vet caught it. One morning, my cat wasn't breathing comfortably, and I had to take him to the vet to be put to sleep. I still have most of the vitamin d that I bought. I haven't found anyone to take the rx food, either.

The obvious one is that my orange guy ate way too much. Not only did I have the classic free feeding bowl out, I think he had food anxiety issues while his sister was still with us. He looked like a basketball. :( The other mistake was not keeping them used to being crated up and going for a ride. I learned rather definitively the first time I tried to crate Caesar before Cleopatra. Crating her alerted him... My wife and I plan to take impending kittens for rides with use frequently.

The biggest mistake I made was feeding my cat dry food. We adopted a cat from a shelter 19 years ago. At that point there wasn't a lot of information online. We fed him a high quality kibble because that's what everyone did then. As he got older he had inflammatory issues requiring prednisolone every day. He died about a year ago, last March. I still mourn him and cry when I think about it. He made it to almost 18 but he would have lived longer if we had known better and fed him a high quality wet food from the start. We adopted two 4-month-old kittens just over a year ago. They get the best wet food. One of them is a kibble addict, he was fed Royal Canin kitten food at the shelter and he loves it. He gets a little every day, it's his evening treat. We built them a climbing area with platforms and two very tall cat trees in the living room and we are in the process of building them an enclosed 8x10 catio on the deck. The local shelter requires that people sign a contract agreeing that they will not let their cats out due to the risks and shortened lifespan. If you live in the country it is safer but still better to be very careful. As an attorney I wish we could prosecute people who declaw their cats. It is animal abuse. If you are that worried about your furniture, don't get a cat. If you can't put the time in to trim your cats claws once every couple of weeks, don't get a cat. If you aren't willing to spend the time to train your cat, don't get a cat. I recognize that this might sound harsh but cats are living creatures and if a person isn't willing to put the time in they shouldn't adopt a cat. Declawing is illegal in most countries and provinces. The fact that it is still done even occasionally occasionally in the United States is a black mark against us. Because we lost our cat when he was almost 18 I've become an advocate for wet food. I'll buy wet food for people, link them articles and information, websites and videos. It is a difficult balance, you don't want to be that person who hammers their friends but neither do you want to remain quiet when they are doing something that you know will shorten their cat's life.

My step-daughter had a cat that came with her house. They never found out where it came from. The house had been empty for a very long time, so not likely the previous owner. The cat just walked through the door, and stayed. She was an indoor/outdoor cat, and she was super sweet. Since they didn't intend to have a cat in the first place, they kind of neglected things that they probably would have done if the cat had been an active choice, like getting her spayed. She ended up having a litter of kittens. Everything seemed fine at first, but after the kittens got new homes, one by one, the calls came in that the kittens died. The cat had caught an STD from mating and passed it on to the kittens. She only lived about a year longer herself.

Hi, just wanted to say I love your videos. Not sure if you've been asked this before, but do you have any advice for how to live with cats when blind, like me? Someone else takes care of them, but maybe you have something. Also, is there a way I can have the cats come to me when I call their names? I get depressed often and it would help if they'd come more consistently to help, and they do help. Thanks.

Find a treat the cat absolutely loves and only give them that treat when they come to interact with you. No exceptions. Before feeding them that treat, say a word or make a noise (like shaking or crinkling the bag) that will trigger the cat to respond. This all involves a bit of ritual repetition, but it shouldn't take too long to achieve your desired result. Good luck 😊

i know a lot of cats love those freeze dried chicken treats. I give my cats those from a brand called Pure Bites and they love it. Plus its healthier than most of the alternatives. Reason I brought this up is because when I adopted my third cat, he was quite scared of everything but i sat there for hours with these treats in my hand and he eventually made his way over to me. As long as you associate good/fun interactions with the treats and include yourself, the cats will remember and make their way over to you more often. Later on, they'll just like you more in general and often seek your attention with head rubs. They won't be necessarily after just the treats haha. Nowadays I just call my cats name, stick my hand near my knee and they love coming in for rubs. I know you can get to the same place as us!

My biggest mistake and regret of my life was leaving my beautiful cat outdoors by himself away from home (1.5 miles to be ). He grew up as an indoor/ outdoor cat but once I moved to an Appartment I felt bad for leaving him indoors all the time. He loved the outdoors as much as I do and call me crazy but something always told me he wanted fresh air. So for two years in row we went outside and wonder off together. I noticed he was becoming familiar with the place and was marking his territory. So I started leaving him by himself while I ran some errands. I always used an AirTag on him and found him while he was outside. However, I got lazy and let my guard down, some dogs attacked him. He was gone by the time arrived. I will never be the same, my soulmate is gone. I’m heart broken. If you walk your cat outside with or without a leash do it SUPERVISED AT All Times. And use an AirTag. Be strict with your cat or cats even if they get mad or something. It sucks but I have to accept my mistake. Now I have to live with it. Miss you Donatello. Always in my ♥️ 😢

I adooted a bonded pair of kittens and when one passed away at age 11, I decided to get a new companion for my remaining 11 year old resident cat. Well it’s been 5 months and the resident cat is still hissing and I cannot put them together unsupervised. So one always has to stay locked away in the basement or a bedroom. It doesn’t appear to bother either one, but it’s really hard on us. I’m not giving up that someday they will get along. But if I had to do it over, I think I’d aim for a slightly older companion for my 11 year old. Our new cat is almost 2 and has way too much energy for my older girl, so she just annoys her.

I was a teen when getting my first cat and was in charge of taking care of him, I only listened to my vet and fed him a horrible dry food which wasn't nutritional and I feel so much regret for not giving him the best life while he was in my care, I wish I paid more attention to him and did more research :( We had to move far away and ending up giving him to an old family friend but I think about this pretty often.. As owners, I am sure we have all made mistakes and misunderstood our cat in some way. But there are certain errors that are so inhumane such as declawing your cat. I don't mean to be rude but I will never understand why would anyone get such a savage idea. If you love your cat, and inform yourself a little bit about feline behavior, there is not a single reason to go for that choice. I always research so much before taking decisions with mine, but experience with him has been the best teacher. Yet I am not afraid to contact the vet and other cat owners as much as I find necessary, because the well-being of your pet comes first.

My biggest mistake was assuming for years that just because store bought food is on the shelf that it is automatically ok for your cat to eat. It isn't. And that goes for no name brands all the way up to expensive high end brands. Learn about what your cat should and should not be eating. Not just talking about avoiding carb-packed kibble. There are wet food dangers too. Read the labels. Research the ingredients. If I had started that years earlier, I could have avoided hyperthyroidism for several cats. (Tip-avoid cat food containing sodium selenite, a toxic ingredient that became more common starting in 2016.) Don't buy the bullcrap when your vet says that your cat has a condition just because they are old. That is a lazy answer. Both people and pets are getting more and more sick because our environment and our foods are full of bad ingredients. The less toxic your environment and food are, the healthier both you and your pets will be. Good luck.

My biggest mistake as a cat parent was that I have been excessively vigilant and responsible for my cat's health. This over-the-top care to have any symptom, even the slightest one, immediately checked and regulated, resulted to my recent BAD choice of taking him to an aggressive vet, and not to his standard homeopathy vet. He initiated a series of -seemingly endless/limitless- unnecessary and entirely inappropriate antibiotic injections, on a daily basis, which caused severe haemolytic aneamia to my cat. Despite visiting this same vet as an emergency during the weekend when the first symptoms of illness showed up, he did not check the animal as he ought to as to find and treat the reasons for his sudden malaise, and my cat lost his beautiful, precious, shining life within 4 days. In hindsight, I wish I was more trusting, balancef in my care for him and more laid back and carefree for his initial symptom, as to have the clarity to make the right choice for him

Let's be patient maybe you can find somewhere food he likes and then just give him dry every once in awhile like I do because they are very prone to urinary blockage has good luck

Try different kinds of scratching post to do that I have I had a very tall scratching post cuz my other cat was very tall with huge black panther cat and he was like 20 lb and he was not fat he was just big and so I had this really tall scratching post and she wouldn't use it so I lay it on its side she climbs on top of it cuz she's only 6 lb and scratches away on it and then I have a round 1 in the living room and then I have small little wooden ones wooden ones in every room I have scratching post so spread them around and put them like if you get the big one put it on and let him climb on top of it and show him how to do it take his feet and and show him how to do it that's what I did with this little girl I put her on top of it and she lays on it and does it maybe he will do it if he can lay on top of it by one of those really big ones and lay it down sideways and put him on it and let him try it that way and maybe you can encourage him to do that. But you said he stands up and he does the doorway so maybe you can leave one standing up just get a big tall one put it next to the door worry scratches and do it for him and show him good luck be patient
