So, in this video you will learn, What is LIDAR, How LIDAR works, Difference between RADAR and LIDAR and different applications of LIDAR.
What is LIDAR?
LIDAR is the acronym of the term Light Detection And Ranging. In this technology light source or light, waves are used to measure the distance between the objects.
How LIDAR Works?
Most of the LIDAR system works on the time of flight principle, where laser in pulsed form is targeted onto the object and the reflected or the scattered pulse is measured using the detector.
By measuring the time difference between the transmitted and reflected pulse, the distance between the objects can be calculated.
Now, as the LASER beam has very low divergence (Less expansion with travel distance)and very short wavelength, it can also be used for scanning of the object. (For 3D mapping and surface scanning applications)
LIDAR vs RADAR
1. RADAR uses radio waves (Longer Wavelength), while LIDAR uses Light waves (Shorter Wavelength).
2. LIDAR is more accurate than RADAR as it uses shorter wavelength.
3. RADAR can work in harsh environments like fog, rain, and snow, while LIDAR has limited usability in such environments.
4. While RADAR is used in applications where detection distance is important but not the exact size and shape of an object, like in military applications. While LIDAR is used in applications where the detection of exact shape and size of the object is necessary.

I kindly thank you for this video, Sir. I would have one more thing to say: measuring the distance by travel time only works with lidars using short pulses. Continuous emitting lidars use phase difference to determine the distance

I'm Belgian, so I neither speak English nor Indian natively. In my opinion, understanding Indian English is about wanting to understand it. With a bit of training, (read: not actively avoiding Indian accent videos) I got to a point where it doesn't bother me that much anymore. And seriously, with the amount of Indian good quality channels like this one out there, it's totally worth it!

This technology is used for surface profiling or 3D mapping. It is also used in self driving cars to map the data. Lasers are already used in telecommunication (Both fiber optic and free space communications). But I don't think so this particular method (LIDAR) will be useful for transmitting the data in telecommunication field.

How less wavelength of LIDAR makes it possible to detect small objects as compared to high wavelength of RADAR ?

How many times Lidar can track in same place? One time is ok to collect the distance?

You can get the distance in the single measurement. But for better accuracy, it should track the same place multiple times.

In centimeters. For the centimeter distance, if you calculate the time difference between the transmitted and the received pulse, it will be in picoseconds (t= distance/ speed of light). So, it is hard to resolve the pulses which are just a few picoseconds away from each other.

I seriously wonder why Elon musk is so against LIDAR SYSTEMS and so in favor of cameras plus RADAR. He had a point a decade ago, when they were extremely expensive. But they are so cheap now that even Apple included one in the iPhone 12. I don't get it. Maybe I am missing something.
