Thanks so much for very clear instructions. I purchased a Sony Bravia tv and was attempting to hook up a dvr and avr with what I now know were obsolete hdmi cables. Having wasted hours trying a host of different connections and either getting audio, no video or the other way around I was seriously thinking of chucking the avr out! Your explanation of the optical cord option solved my issue in 2 minutes (after finding the correct input settings on the Pioneer avr). I was contemplating shelling out a few hundred for a sound bar. So glad I found your video!

Thank you so much, you helped solve a mystery with my surround sound that over 10 people including engineers, technicians, and others couldn't solve. You said to use high-speed HDMI which no one realized and I was able to solve it once you mentioned it.

Great video! I have struggled for years to connect my old (vintage) HK AVR to our Samsung "SmartTV." So, now I can actually hear FM radio (I made a simple antenna that works!), connect to my DVD, use AirPlay (with RocketFish adapter) to connect iPhone/iPad to receiver and watch on TV. I did not watch the entire video, so I don't know if you covered how to set-up so that the AirPlay sound comes out my speakers, rather than the TV speakers.

I watched about seven or eight videos on the same subject and they were so poorly done that I had to turn them off prematurely. Then I watched this instructional video. What a difference! Truly excellent. Professionally done. Clear explanations. Showed all of the options and discuss the benefits and disadvantages of each option. Also pointed out the importance of the right cable for each option. That's the trouble with KZfaq, one will obtain a super high quality instructional videos such as this one followed by six or seven really bad ones. Thank you for a professionally done, most excellent instructional video on how to connect up a smart TV to an AVR.

Thank you for this helpful video! I was like 5 steps from wits end trying to connect my LGTV to my Receiver using ARC. Didn't realize that the TV has a specific ARC port. I thought all of them were the same. One quick change and setup later and now I can control my receiver with my Magic Remote. Appreciate the tutorial!

Me too. I have a new LG C1 and I can't make it work on ARC for my Sony receiver's speakers to work. Brand new cord. What was the solution Jeff? Did you buy a specific "ARC" cord? I'm using a new high speed cord. This TV has no white/red connections.
@Blackdog48182 жыл бұрын
In a Sony DH-950 receiver, there's standard setting, which is where my old Sony Bravia was set to automatically, and then "enhanced" which is the 4k mode. You must switch it, or you won't get sound on the new TV's with an ARC connection.
@JeffJSays2 жыл бұрын
@@Blackdog4818 Hey! I used a regular HDMI cord and connected it to the ARC ports on the receiver and the HDMI. Then ran the sound setup on the LG. On my Yamaha, I set the ARC audio to "Audio 1". That solved a lot of problems. It will disconnect from time to time but if I switch back to audio 1, Im straight
@Blackdog48182 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's probably the 4k mode. You might want to read the instructions like I should have. You can usually find them online with a search. I found my Sony DH-590 full manual, and found that there were 2 settings, and only one works with 4k. Could be the same way with the Yamaha Amp as well.
@Blackdog48182 жыл бұрын
And then if you figure out the right ARC connection, you have to make sure you're not on surround sound, or you'll get the music and background audio but no dialog. I had to switch my 2 stand speakers (not a sound bar) to "2 channel" vs. "5.1 surround". If I accidentally touch surround sound on my receiver, it cuts out the dialog. LOL.

I just found your channel yesterday. Excellent videos. Okay, so I’m following you so far. The tv and the AVR connection I got. What if I’m adding in a Samsung sound bar? What would be the signal flow between the three of them, and the connections I would make. (I’ll be adding in a Xfinity box and a DVD player a ways down the road.) Edit: I also wanted to add that the signal is coming into the tv from it being connected to the WiFi in the house.

Old but gold 👍 I wish you have explained that you loose surround sound with toslink. Most TVs also today only provide PCM2.0 signal (stereo) and then it is up to the AVR reciever to transcode the signal over to surround. Some TVs do provide pass thru, but not many. This is why it is best to use HDMI with ARC. Please also be aware that not all apps installed on smart TVs output surround. So check that too, if you have issues 🙂

This Video was helpful but I have a problem regarding streaming. The house we bought in 2014 had a pretty involved entertainment system. It had a remote AV system (Marantz 5009) in a small closet in our frog along with the router and modem. As long as we were using cable, the 5.1 and the TV in the living room worked well but after many years of the rising prices of services, we went over to a Roku. At that point, we lost the 5.1 and only had the TV speakers. (Samsung vintage 2014 and couldn't add apps) Quality was not the same. Started reading up on HDMI transmitter/ receivers and purchased one with extended range. ( TV to AV and receiver was over 40' and 2 walls.) The AV had a CBL/Sat input and a monitor output to TV. Plugged the receiver into the CBL/Sat input on the AV with 5v power cord. I plugged the transmitter directly into the Roku and plugged both 5V power cords off the Roku and transmitter into the 2 USB ports in the back of the TV. I set the TV sound to Audio out and made some adjustments on AV remote and amazingly, It all worked!!! We now can enjoy both great tv movie and music sound.

You should show a regular analog dolby surround setup, some people still have those and you can get surround through that. The down is that its just Dolby Pro Logic Surround. Now I think that is a good option if you have a bigger old Dolby Surround Pro Logic AVR. Many of those AVR's have sound fields and options that you just don't see on the simple AVRs of today. Also the new ones are cannot use a tape deck, only play but not for recording. Some of us still have older stuff. This is why I am going to keep with just dolby pro logic surround, it's way simpler and connects to the most components.

Thank you so much! But to be sure I understand....I have a Smart tv, with a satellite box as well as a stream box. If I want the sound to come receiver and home theater speakers for all devices and apps, I should connect all of the devices (satellite, steam box dvd, etc) to the TV and use a Toslink cable to connect from the tv to the receiver? Will this allow me to switch the source via the TV but keeping the sound of everything coming through the receiver/speakers?

Then I noticed that you skipped ahead, leaving out any intro to the digital RCA type cable (wrong name?) Probably lost in editing. Still, very helpful, Thank you
@Allabouthomeelectronics4 жыл бұрын
RCA (Red / White colors) are analog thus only capable of carrying a 2 channel, left right stereo, signal whereas a digital cable such as Toslink optical, HDMI, Digital Coaxial Audio, all can carry more than 2.0 stereo; they carry 5.1 and better to your surround receiver which then processes the in coming signal and sends it to the respective speaker. The .1 is a subwoofer signal.

@@Allabouthomeelectronics I have a Apple TV as well as a stereo system. If I use the “HDMI OUT” on my stereo system, and then plug the HDMI cord into “HDMI 1” on my television, how would I go about also connecting my Apple TV? If I plug the Apple TV directly into the “HDMI 2” slot on my television, it obviously isn’t connected the stereo system and also uses a different input. Would the Apple TV show picture and sound (work properly) if I plugged it into the back of my stereo system via one of the other HDMI slots on there, and then use the “HDMI OUT” to plug the stereo into my television, then use the front screen on my system to select the proper HDMI port where the Apple TV is? The Apple TV only has ports for Ethernet and HDMI.

My connection rules go like this: Any device where the audio is at or below the capabilities of ARC (5.1) gets connected directly to the television. For me that’s a Gen2 Apple TV, a VHS VCR, and an old DVD player/recorder. My cable box gets connected to the AVR unit, so its 7.1 (and beyond) audio capabilities can be best utilized. With the Apple TV and the DVD and VCR, I also have direct digital audio to the AVR. This is for instances where those devices might be used for audio-only, and not need anything onscreen. With OTA of course I lose 7.1, but all those channels are available via cable anyway. But sometimes I use OTA anyway, because the lack of compression artifacts makes the viewing experience more enjoyable.

Excellent video for connecting samsung TV with arc hdmi to my yamaha receiver but I have a probably silly question but I'll ask it anyway. I currently have a regular hdmi cable hdmi2 between my yamaha receiver and my TV with all my peripheral devices connected to the receiver on other hdmi ports. Currently I have no sound from the smart TV apps to my receiver and from what I can ascertain it's because I need to use the arc hdmi with a high speed hdmi cable or an optical cable to get the sound. If I use arc hmdi does that mean I don't need the hdmi2 setup for video or is the arc hdmi strictly for audio?
