A Fantastic Reading. At 55 years old I've only just got into Updike. Clearly I've been missing a lot!

If the story had been longer, it would have been neither worse nor better, but a *different story*. I did like this story, which surprised me as I'm not much if an Updike fan.

A rather nice story. I don't think the ending line is too well-found, though. The title of this story also explains, I think, why Nicholson Baker calls his book on Updike "U & I".

The actually ending is extended where Sammy looks for the girls on the beach. Updike's editor from the "New Yorker" thought it should of ended were it is now, and Updike agreed.

I think these two are missing some of the meaning of the story.

Such a pointless and boring story. What a waste of time.
