Philip Killeen it's funny you say this. I went to Limerick in middle school on a school trip and lost my wallet with 80 euros in it (all the money for the week long trip).. 2 years later two policemen delivered it at my house in Rome Italy. With all the money in it. For comparison a girl lost her wallet years later in Manchester and all her info got immediately stolen. From then on I trusted the Irish blindly, and the English much less

Randall Cotten Cuz the Irish are fighters, man. Give us a good reason to be pissed, and you'll regret it for sure. The last part of this song showcases that; the guy was given crappy conditions on a British ship back to Tuam, then the guys started making fun of Ireland. Nothing gets an Irishman more fired up than people making fun of his home country. Playing this over a Fight-Club-esque scene was a brilliant move on Guy Ritchie's part.
@randallcotten5069
@randallcotten5069 9 жыл бұрын
It fits perfectly with the scene, you're right. It fits well the change in image of Sherlock: not a wimpy little brainy guy. He's uses his mind to kick some butt. Just like the Irish.

Just for those who don’t know, the Shillelagh is a traditional Irish heavy walking stick/club, often made from blackthorn. It’s a brutal bludgeoning weapon, and when he says “my shillelagh I let fly”, it means someone is about to have a *very* bad day.

I heard this song in Sherlock Holmes. Absolutely loved the music and the voice of singer but couldn't understand a single word. ( I am Indian and Irish accent is not my cup of tea) Searched for it on KZfaq and was surprised to know that it was in english. Since then one of my bucket list is to sing along with this song. 3 years and still not able to sing properly but before I die I am going to do it, that is my promise to myself.

While in the merry month of May, now from me home I started Left, the girls of Tuam were nearly broken-hearted Saluted father dear, kissed me darling mother Drank a pint of beer, me grief and tears to smother Then off to reap the corn and leave where I was born Cut a stout, black thorn to banish ghosts and goblins A brand-new pair of brogues to rattle over the bogs And frighten all the dogs on the rocky road to Dublin A-one, two, three, four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah In Mullingar that night I rested limbs so weary Started by daylight next morning blithe and early Took a drop of pure to keep me heart from shrinking Thats the Paddy's cure when'er he's on for drinking To hear the lassies smile, laughing all the while At me curious style, 'twould set your heart a-bubblin' They asked me was I hired and wages I required to lay Was almost tired of the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three, four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity To be so soon deprived a view of that fine city So then I took a stroll, all among the quality Bundle it was stolen, in a neat locality Something crossed me mind, when I looked behind No bundle could I find upon me stick a-wobblin' 'Quiring after the rogue, said me Connaught brogue It wasn't much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah From there I got away, me spirits never falling Landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailing Captain at me roared, said that no room had he When I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy Down among the pigs, did some hearty rigs I played some hearty jigs, the water round me bubbling When off Holyhead I wished meself was dead Or better for instead on the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah The boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed Called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it Blood began to boil, temper I was losing Poor old Erin's Isle they began abusing "Hurrah me soul" says I, me Shillelagh I let fly Galway boys were by and saw I was a hobblin' With a "lo!" and "hurray!" they joined in the affray Quickly cleared the way for the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah

The Dubliners - Rocky Road To Dublin Lyrics While in the merry month of May, now from me home I started Left, the girls of Tuam were nearly broken-hearted Saluted father dear, kissed me darling mother Drank a pint of beer, me grief and tears to smother Then off to reap the corn and leave where I was born Cut a stout, black thorn to banish ghosts and goblins A brand-new pair of brogues to rattle over the bogs And frighten all the dogs on the rocky road to Dublin A-one, two, three, four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah In Mullingar that night I rested limbs so weary Started by daylight next morning blithe and early Took a drop of pure to keep me heart from shrinking Thats the Paddy's cure when'er he's on for drinking To hear the lassies smile, laughing all the while At me curious style, 'twould set your heart a-bubblin' They asked me was I hired and wages I required to lay Was almost tired of the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three, four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity To be so soon deprived a view of that fine city So then I took a stroll, all among the quality Bundle it was stolen, in a neat locality Something crossed me mind, when I looked behind No bundle could I find upon me stick a-wobblin' 'Quiring after the rogue, said me Connaught brogue It wasn't much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah From there I got away, me spirits never falling Landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailing Captain at me roared, said that no room had he When I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy Down among the pigs, did some hearty rigs I played some hearty jigs, the water round me bubbling When off Holyhead I wished meself was dead Or better for instead on the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah The boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed Called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it Blood began to boil, temper I was losing Poor old Erin's Isle they began abusing "Hurrah me soul" says I, me Shillelagh I let fly Galway boys were by and saw I was a hobblin' And with a "lo!" and "hurray!" they joined in the affray And quickly cleared the way for the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah

I always thought he said "and back to Donegal", as in that was where he started from, although I guess that's Ulster and not Connaught. Still, I dont want to sing "follol-de-dah" because it doesn't make as much sense as "Donegal".

KZfaq recommended this to me and I was like “FINE I'll listen to it“, and now after three replays I kinda get the hang of it and I can already keep up with most of the words! It's still a new song to me, but once it gets familiar I guess I can sing it by myself and perform it as a party trick. And I'm German, I'm not even Irish or English lol.
