A little jaunt with the straight-piped B61. The GoPro got rattled sideways the first time out, had to start again!

Incredible truck. From what I could tell, I believe it's oringnal. The B model is the best looking of all trucks. The rounded roof and fenders. It's a look that never gets old.

This reminds me of my grandfather's B61 Mack. I remember riding in it when I was a kid and watching him shift with the twin sticks. Awesome video, great shifting!

Learned to drive in a B61 with a quadra plex trans. The good ole days, drivers now would pull their hair out!!! Retired now, but miss it!

Beautiful sounding truck, and that guy is good at shifting that truck. Enjoy watching him. Driving a truck like that back in the day must of left the driver exhausted at quitting time.

Wow, what a small World. This truck is almost identical to the Truck that I first trained on to get my CDL. I learned on a 1954 B Model Mack Turbo Diesel, with a 5 & 4 Twin Stick. They were bad ass back in the day. The only thing I hated about them is the steering wheel being to close to the driver's door vent window, and catching my pinky finger on that window latch when turning the wheel. Other than that, I loved, and miss that old girl. I see yours is from New York State too. That makes it even more interesting, because I am originally from Upstate NY.

Man oh man does that Turbo spool up easy or what!? Gosh that sounds sweet. I sure miss the sound of these old Mack's running up and down the highways and byways of America. I don't know what the rpm range was for these engines, but it sounds like it was a very narrow power band. A couple hundred rpm and it was time for another gear change. So cool! Thank you for posting this video duncanfbrown!!
@Mullay26 жыл бұрын
These old B-61's had a horsepower rating around 180 horsepower typically with about 600 pounds of torque. They had to be kept pretty wound up to deliver power Like most diesels the power band is narrow about 500 RPM plus or minus. Later models made about 237 horsepower with 900 pounds of torque.
@cindytepper88785 жыл бұрын
The Maxidyne had a very wide powerband. Peak torque was around 1200 and most were built with TRL 107 five speed or TRXL 107 six speed transmissions

What set up and what's the top speed? I'm looking for a restoration project to haul my hot rods and antique tractors to shows with and I love the look of these old Mack's. But I also know some of these old trucks could get out ran by a stock m35 if you know what I mean.

Is the gearbox synchronized or the driver knows when the best time to shift is or both? In these trucks There is usually some double clutching involved. Btw that was nice.
@ryanmr16838 жыл бұрын
+Marios Pantouvanos There's no way this old girl would have a syncro. It'd be a crash box and he'd most likely float em'
@mdlclassworker33845 жыл бұрын
Get real there were no synchros and the clutch was for starting from a complete stop, after that you float the gears ( RPM match if you like) nothing more satisfying then floating the gears so smoothly that a passenger can't even feel a shift
@jonnothetrucker4 жыл бұрын
He's using the the clutch to take the weight off it to pull it out of gear

Dear-Gawd! My favorite truck is a twin-shift Mack B-61?! Is there a way around having a twin shift on one of these, like maybe a single shift 9spd???
@SootyMangabey.9 жыл бұрын
Aleiria13 yeah.. take the twin stick out and replace it.. But why would you want to do that?

I thinking about getting a vintage diesel project that I plan on driving sometimes maybe 3k miles a year including occasional freeway speeds(65mph +/-).What is the top cruising speed of something like this?Is there a specific engine/gear box combo I should be looking for or to avoid?
@alecglassidis00t6 жыл бұрын
deegan727 a 673 turbo thermodyne with a duplex ( twin stick 10 speed) would be the best combo

BRADY SCHROEDER Build sheet says it came with an END673P, which is a non-turbo Thermodyne. It's been replaced at some point with an END673T, which was a regular Thermodyne with a turbo (which you can definitely hear in the video!) The hood script says "Thermodyne."

Back when trucks were meant to be driven by truck drivers, today trucks are made so anyone can drive them or should I say hang on to the steering wheel, the art of operating a truck is dying
@johnharrington28316 жыл бұрын
Suppose why Mack Motor Company spent all that extra money putting those extra gears in that transmisson that you don't use....?
@alecglassidis00t6 жыл бұрын
John Harrington for when you will need them these trucks were beaten, overloaded and put through a hell that these new trucks would turn these new trucks to dust! He’s currently empty so he doesn’t need to hit every gear!
