What I found awesome with the USB audio is that you are able to route the audio from different Windows applications (eg Spotify, game audio etc) to either the "FX to MIX" or "St3 to Mix" channel, enabling you adjust the volume via the fader knobs. A feature that a lot other more expensive USB mixers lack.

Kyle, another DJ tutorial recommended this mixer in order to run summed output to active sub(s) separated from stereo mix output to mains. He can control gains separately and clean up total sound this way. It makes intuitive sense. He also likes preamps in mixers > DJ controllers. First, what is your opinion of this recommendation? Second, is there another piece of equipment you would recommend to do this? Thank you for your time and incredibly effective videos.

Quick Q for the OP or anyone using a Zedi10FX. Is your Headphone Out Jack providing FULL Stereo or is it summed mono only? Mine only gives out summed mono. Either a faulty hardware or flawed design so I need to know if this is a constant with other users. Thanks and cheers !

Can you run external effects through the Aux or FX Out in stereo? It seems like you can only output mono, but then return from a reverb pedal in stereo. Is that correct? I have seen people use splitter cables with the FX Out, suggesting that it's a dual stereo and mono output. Do you know if that's correct? I can't seem to find anything on the Internet about this output or the auxiliary output.

I haven't seen any video or anything on the internet from the manufacturer or elsewhere about how you can route the 4 outputs from the usb or what it means that there are 4 digital outputs. Can you assign it or are they fixed to certain channels. Can those channels be sent into separate outputs so that you end up with say 1-2 through the main and then 3-4 you could send only through the aux so that you get 4 physical outputs into 4 different cables or 4 individual speakers or at least 2 stereo signals somehow? Or do they all automatically go to the main output?

Hi, it is a great mixer indeed and congrats on the video, really good review. Below 250 I would look at the Behringer Flow8 and the Soundcraft Notepad 12FX - they have similar capabilities, the Flow8 even has more (like outputting 10 channels through USB and having all kinds of effects imaginable built in) - albeit it is a digital mixer. Preamp- and build quality may be a deciding factor between them.

I think you indicated that there was global control for phantom power, so does that mean each mic channel doesn't have individual phantom on off. The reason I ask is sometimes I run a dynamic and condenser together, so individuals on/off phantom would be good.

Yes. Phantom power to all mic inputs is either all on or all off. However, there’s no harm in supplying phantom power to a dynamic microphone.

Perhaps i can expand the flexibility and add a sax or another dedicated drum chann?? Thank you in advance.
@AudioUniversity
@AudioUniversity 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that you can get a great jazz drum sound with only 1 or 2 mics. You could then take bass into a channel and sax into another channel (that is 4 channels). If the keyboard is USB, you could connect it straight to the computer and listen to the output through the mixer. However, you might get some latency on the keyboard doing it that way. If so, maybe try running the keyboard into the mixer analog (if that’s an option with your keyboard) and only use 1 drum mic. That way you can monitor all instruments through the mixer with 0 latency.

I need an interface to record my guitar, and acoustic instruments via mics, into a DAW, then I want to play the audio back out of the DAW, through the guitar pedals and record that back into the DAW, while I 'play' the pedals. I guess an interface would suffice, but I kinda like the idea of a mixer. Perhaps my choice should come down to the audio quality of each device, and the quality of their mic pre-amps?

Seriously, I've had the worse luck with it's more expensive counterparts like the Soundcraft 12 and Presonus 12. Both of those were double the price and although they had more channels, neither one of those lasted two years sitting in a smoke free home studio. The USB interface and digital FX went bad in both of those units and it would've been 200 to 300 bucks to fix. So I sold them for parts and decided to go simple, no FX, small number of channels, etc. This has been amazing. It sounds better than the other two, the driver for the interface is WAYYYY more stable and so FAR it has lasted past the life span of those other ones as well. My goal is to eventually get an RME interface but I would still keep this for the easy setup for twitch shows or podcast.

BEWARE. If you plan to use this mixer as a USB Interface to your DAW (computer), you CANNOT record the EQ from each strip. It's very VERY counter intuitive, I know, but I found out the hard way. If you want to record each strips WITH the mixer's built-in EQ (and FX for the FX version), you will need a separate USB audio interface connected to your DAW (i.e. feed the mixer's LR XLR outputs to it) and setup your DAW based on this Interface. There is a round about and weird way to record the EQ (and/or FX) on some strips (but not all) but it is just weird and kind of useless. This is (to me anyway) a HUGE shortfall of the Zedi10 and FX version

@@AudioUniversity Yes and no. Say you have 4 mics plugged in and 4 tracks armed in your DAW. Tracks 3&4 will record any and all EQ+FX applied including those from inputs 1&2. BUT tracks 1 & 2 will NOT record any of the EQ or FX set to those two first strips. I'm not by any means a pro at this but this seems counter intuitive and very confusing but I suspect there is a technical reason for it all. It's something all users should be aware of as planning to record all 4 separate channels with their very own EQ/FX is impossible.

I see. That does make sense in many cases, because recording a clean signal (not affected by EQ) is often preferred. You can use the mixer EQ for the live speakers and still get a clean recording. Thanks for pointing out this quirk!

Too many product links listed, they take you all over the world, and half of them are for totally different products. So totally useless.

Although the Allen Heath Zed series are built well and the sound quality is very good, there is one issue with the stereo channels inputs: while these inputs accepts both TRS (balanced) and TS (unbalanced) jacks, the inputs are actually unbalanced so, if you want to connect the output of a balanced device to the stereo channels TRS inputs, you loose the balanced connection because the inputs are actually unbalanced. What is the point of fitting a mixer with TRS inputs that accepts a balanced signal, only to loose the balanced connection and half of the source signal level at the mixer input?

Hi how did you find this out? I was considering this mixer as I needed balanced inputs to eliminate a hum issue. I read the manual and it says it accepts balanced signals, so obviously I assumed the inputs were balanced! It's crazy if they are not, butI'd like to know where I could see myself. I was actually considering the Z10, the non audio interface one, but I imagine its the same issue
