I’ve edited the title of the video and removed the person name and IG handle to lessen the blow. However I still say his name in the video.
Allen has since changed his username twice. The internet has brought him enough grief. This will stand as documentation of what occurred.
I’m also pausing comments in order to lessen the fuel added to the fire. I don’t expect everyone to agree with the video but some people were attempting to be uncivil.

To whom it may concern, new knife makers are not perfect and are learning, we support there businesses because we hope that over time they will become very skilled in there craft and become an asset to this amazing community. These makers will remember the ones who supported and helped them along the way. They are not perfect and you should not expect perfect, at some point hopefully they will get close to that. hand made knives are typically not 100% perfect. To the maker in this video keep making knives and do your best to offer the best products you can in that moment, continue to learn and grow and hone your craft. Become someone who is not only respected in the knife community but loved and sometimes that means your gonna eat Sht.

But now I have the information and know what the character of some are. Thanks Kyle for keeping me out of it. Allen you messaged me about the spots after you had the knife for two months dude and I offered you your money back and you refused and took this road. Your character needs work man, trying to cause shit between Kyle and I and who ever else you can. When I received the knife I was going to use it so it didn't bother me and yes Kyle is a good knife maker and yes I am and will buy from him again. Baiting someone into saying something with shit so you can run and copy it just to stir shit up reminds me of my time in elementary school. that is wild. ive been a more or less full time maker for a little over a decade now, and i dont think ive ever had what you are describing happen to me. id say around 98% of my customers have been pretty awesome folks just looking for good knives. the nitpickers, when you get them are fairly easy to deal with. when I get someone that gets a knife that they are not happy with due to some small cosmetic thing, like uneven edge bevels {i hand sharpen everything} or an uneven plunge grind, or small scratches {usually with kydex} then I simply offer to refund thier money if they send the knife back. no offers of repairing or replacing, just refunds as those folks will just want more and more of your time, constantly looking for an excuse to send a knife back for a "spa" treatment and of course want it for free. but i have never had a secondary customer do what you are describing. now real problems are refunded, replaced, or repaired at the buyers choice.

This is an interesting situation. Coming at it as a maker myself, I'd say it's 100% at the discretion of the maker to refurbish, regrind, or remake based solely on aesthetic issues, especially if done at no charge, for earlier work, and for someone buying second hand at a discount. Have I refurbished or reground older work for customers after my skills improved? Absolutely. Would I regrind or remake every knife I've ever made just because I can make it better than before? That'd be absolutely insane. I'd tell the customer if he wants the best knife you can make, then pay full price for your latest work. It's that simple.

This is the exact reason I stopped making knives. I had a guy (who has a rather large cooking channel) message me about a prototype knife I made, which he saw in the background of an instagram post I made. I didn’t even want to sell the knife, since it wasn’t meant for anything besides being a wall hanger. He said he wanted it for that exact reason, and that it would only appear in the background of some of his videos. That was in 2016. Fast forward to 2018, and he makes a video about it on his second account, talking about how he broke the tip of the knife (about 1/32”) and that he was disappointed because he felt he’d been “taken for a fool”. He didn’t mention my name, but he put my business card in frame. The worst part is: I gave him the knife for free. I even paid for the overseas shipping. When I asked him why he did it, he was playing the poor me song. “I needed views, mate, and I didn’t mean to have your card in the shot!”. He even said that he still loves the knife and that he would keep it on his fireplace mantle, where it had been for the previous two years. He ended up taking the video down, but it didn’t stop several thousand people from seeing it, and caused me to rethink if I really wanted to continue making knives. I still do for friends and family, but that’s it.

You know what your video is on point! It’s in the second owners hands and as a collector I started screwing up my sharpening but I got better and years later I can use a field sharpener on most of my EDC’s and my longer fixed blades I use a larger sharpener but refuse to buy a better sharpener until I’ve mastered the ones I have. That includes wet stones honing and Stropping. In business when you’re making your rep by being genuine and honest with your customers then you continue to do that your customers will always come back for more. Word of mouth is paramount and it sucks to have someone who is obviously trying to take advantage of you but you’re handling this correctly. He bought it second hand so whatever warranty the original owner had left when he sold the knife. Going out of your way and still helping the second owner of the knife then why is this dude calling you out like this is bad and I’ll ruin your reputation! It seems to me that you owe Allen nothing. He bought the knife on a private sale, so it was second hand. Presumeabley he inspected the knife at the time of his purchase from the original buyer. Imagine buying a second hand car and being disatisfied with the vehicle and taking it back to Ford for repairs and wanting the work to be done free of charge. I think Ford would tell where to go! If this guy, Allen, had a problem with the knife, his beef is with the person he bought it from and not you. I think your good intention in trying to rectify the problem was a mistake on your part. On reflection you should have told Allen to take it back to the person he bought it from.

Was bought 2nd hand, all bets are off, that's that. Unless the blade develops a crack, fractures apart or handle disintegrates, you owe him NOTHING. Don't keep this sharade up with him, it's not in your best interest and will just drive you nuts. Keep developing your craft, become a better maker as you progress and accept that you can't make everybody happy all the time. 1 complaint in 100 knives is darn good track record. Always document anything that isn't perfect, before someone buys a knife, and be sure they are aware of exactly what they are buying. Again, second hand purchases do NOT constitute the same type of customer service as original buyer. Taking care of your customer, on whatever level you feel is important, doesn't make 2nd or 3rd hand owner your customer.

It's excellent to see a maker actually stand behind their product, but you need to draw your lines in the sand on what is reasonable warranty. Don't get bullied, this community will have your back and continue to support your work, without you throwing money at a "problem" that isn't your problem to fix.

@@TheScrawnyLumberjackForgot to add this thought in my reply - A good community member would have tried to work with you and not belittle your work. After learning it really doesn't fall under warranty, a good community member might have offered you the knife and some cash to replace the knife if it really bothered them. Not shove down your throat, but try to make a deal RESPECTFULLY.

I dont understand when someone buys a knife off another individual how in the world that can be the makers fault.. you didn't sell him the knife. He bought it from the secondary market. So if you do anything, it's a complete bonus and more than most would do. You owe him Nothing. These are the worst types of customers and customers i wouldn't want. You can't please them.. Kudos for even trying to help..

I see both sides but I don’t think the money issue should be involved. If you guys didn’t have a falling out, I would have had him return his knife to you and exchanged with a knife for the same value or same model. Yes, you’d lose a little money but everyone should be happy at that point.

@@TheScrawnyLumberjack I definitely see where you’re coming from. I was in gun sales. We had finish problems from time to time on new guns. Sometimes we sold them at a discount and the buyer would contact the manufacturer and have the gun fixed, refinished, etc. Never was an issue. The we had a Zev pistol that had a problem where the finish on the slide had some kind of reaction. Several were sent back for refinishing but one was sold to a customer at a discount and we assumed the manufacturer would take care of it without any issues. Zev demanded a copy of his receipt then refused to fix it as the customer had received a discount. I then spoke with their customer service and they flat out refused to fix the gun. We were not amused and the customer ended up getting the slide Cerakoted third party.

You are not in the wrong here. As soon as you said it was not the original purchaser, he had no warranty claim, end of story. If the original purchaser didn't complain about any defects, and sold it secondhand as is, he has no legitimate complaint against you, if he has a legit complaint it should be with who he bought it from. The only company who is in danger of reputation damage is Rustic Red's Leather. I'll remember that name and be sure to not purchase anything from them.
