I'm like a kid in a candy store right now. I just happened to blunder into this story about Eddie Feigner and his four-man softball team. I'm 80 years old now; but was picked for an all star team back in 1957 in Mass. to play against Eddie's team in an exhibition game. We lost 10-0 in seven innings. Eddie was amazing. I was a pretty good hitter at 17 and when I came up to bat the first time Eddie walked back to second base; pitching from there and struck me out on three pitches. I couldn't believe it and hardly could even see the softball coming in. He really didn't need four people on his team as none of us ever hit a fair ball! Also their first batter hit a home run on the first pitch and I have never seen a human run as fast as that man ran. Thanks for the article. I'll have dreams tonight.

Eddie came from my hometown of Walla Walla. Sadly, only the older folks remember him as one of the top two or three athletes to ever compete in any sport. He was a patriotic Marine who employed discipline in every aspect of his life. I only saw him pitch once, but the English language does not contain enough words to describe how overwhelmingly talented he was.

Hey John, I too, just happened across this youtube post this morning. I'm 74 and as a kid, my dad pitched semi-pro, and I, a little league pitcher. He took me to see the King on two occasions in Springfield Ma. One of my fondest youth memories was with dad during this time. Thanks for the post.

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered see my recent post! The trick was set up by catcher, pitcher and 1st baseman. The runner would leave the base after the pitcher and would feel safe 6 or 8 feet off the bag because the first baseman stayed well back. The catcher would signal the pick off by LOBBing the ball back to Eddie. Eddie would reach with glove (as a bluff) but catch it with a bare right hand on top of the ball. This allowed a one-motion behind back shot to the bag. The first base man was cued by the LOB and timed his arrival at the bag. The runner was usually got standing and gaping! They had the same move to second base.

This is still one of the best documentaries of all time. I am so honored to have met The King, Eddie Feigner, and His Court several times during the 70's and 80's and still have his book he gave us during Desert Shield/Storm in 1991. It's 2022 now and I wonder if we will ever be able to experience anything comparable to what they shared with us. I sincerely pray that we do. Thanks .... R.I.P. Mr. Feigner. 🙏🇺🇸⚾

I will never forget the thrill of playing against them in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1950 . Not being a particularly strong hitter I usually brought up the end of the batting order but our coach decided to reverse that and put me in first to face The King. Now 90 I don’t recall for sure just how he threw to me ( I think it was just three straightforward fast balls) but I do remember I never got the bat off my shoulder - it was just 1, 2, 3, “you’r out”. Then after retiring our whole team in three innings I was up again in the fourth only to be the first one to face him pitching from 2nd base. Imagine my delight to receive a walk and being able to claim the distinction of having got on base against the truly great Eddie Feigner!! Great memories!!

Back in the summer of 1966 I was a playground instructer at Patriots park in Allentown Pa. I was lucky to see Eddie and get to talk with him after the game. I watched as he hit an unbelievable home run with the tiny bat. He did the phantom pitch which the ump called a strike and the batter didn't say a word. Just an unbelievable show. I'm 73 now and I still remember that game.

I was the promoter for Eddie’s 10,000th game at Hall of Fame Stadium in OKC. Incredible night, and they inducted him into the softball hall of fame. I still have a signed ball, tickets and promo posters. The next time I saw them was on May 4, 1999. The day after the tornado. They were supposed to play that night. I helped them rent a van and a car, then had dinner with Eddie and AM. I have seen them several times since then and they always treated me almost like family. I miss those times and that team.

When I was a freshman in college in 1968 The King and His Court played a game in Brenham Texas. I was their batboy for the game and was given the opportunity to warm up Mr Feiner. He could throw the ball up, down, and sideways it was remarkable. I was used to baseball, and he did things that baseball pitchers could not duplicate. Glad to see this feature on him. I hope this will bring back memories to all who saw or played against THE King!!!

My dad played on a local fast pitch softball team in 1968. The King and his Court came to San Antonio, and my dad's team played them at our little league field (Westwood Terrace Little League). It was amazing. Eddie struck out batters pitching from second base, struck out batters without throwing the ball (he pitched it into his own glove), picked off two runners on first base with behind the back throws from the mound. The only run our team scored was a solid homerun off of one of Eddie's pitches. All four of Eddie's team shook his hand as he rounded the bases. The batter later confessed he closed his eyes and swung, luckily connecting for the homer. Eddie Feigner was truly one of a kind.

This brings back memories. In the mid 70's the King and His Court came to my hometown and played our local All-Star men's softball team. I remember one of our players getting hold of a pitch and jacking it in to the park tree tops. King and His Court won anyway. Love the Harlem Globetrotters, but that's what's different, these 4 guys took on legitimate good players and won.

I watched my Dad play his team against them among a very large crowd. It was amazing to see Eddie pitch the ball.....Only one person was able to get the ball out of the infield...the shortstop ran to the outfield and threw the runner out at third base....They were the most entertaining group of guys besides the Globetrotters in sports....I will never forget it....My Dad was a lefty and one of the best ballplayers who played on my team in the late 70's .....He was a slow pitch pitcher and I wanted to do the same and I did so.......We had many years of undefeated seasons and will always cherish the time I got to play with him...He passed away in 2011...he was 86..Would love to played just one more game with him....so much fun....miss you Pop

I kept score every time The King and his Court played at Idora Park in Youngstown, Ohio in the 60's. He put on quite a show every time he appeared. One of my most memorable moments was when Ron Allen, brother of Richie Allen, faced The King. Ron was a standout basketball player at YSU and was signed to a MLB baseball contract. After his brief MLB career, Ron was part of the team that faced The King. Ron took him deep to right center over the Jackrabbit thrill ride. When the inning was over, The King walked over to Ron and congratulated him on his hit and said, "Young man, not many people have ever done what you did... not only did you hit it out; but you drove it deeper than anyone I can recall." The King was a true gentleman!

Thanks for posting, great memories! I grew up pitching in the city leagues in Long Beach, Ca and advanced to pitching in the Pacific Coast Softball League. I also pitched several games against Western Softball Congress teams including the Long Beach Nitehawks and the Lakewood Jets. In an effort to improve my game I was able to go down to Fallbrook, Ca where Eddie lived and receive some first-hand tutoring from him. As many here have already posted, he was a great guy and very generous to spend some time with me. Back to the memories, I played ball with Gary West, Jim Herrick, Mark Bailey and Norm Pfingsten. Bailey and I went to the same high school in Long Beach and Norm and I shared pitching duties on our PCSL team in 1974. I also had the pleasure of pitching a couple of games for Trino Palacios and the California Cuties one year before they commenced their tour for the season. One of those games was against the Oxnard Kings and the great Jack Newman who were fresh from the ASA National Tournament.

Our team in gillette Wyoming played the court in 1980 in gillette. I was a power hitter and without me knowing the catcher mr west colluded with my manager to set me up. I came to the plate and Mr west made this grand announcement that if I could a hit home run he would pay me 25 bucks! There were several thousand of our townspeople there, many I knew. I took up his bet and stood proudly and alert ready to swing away. The bet was i had 2 chances to hit a homeeun slow pitch! Anyway, the first pitch came and it was unhittable but I still reached out with a missing swjng. On the second and last pitch he threw me a dream pitch right down the middle of the pipe! Its like in the moment your in slow motion seeing that perfect pitch coming your way saying to you "hit me...HIT ME"! Then it arrived with great anticipation and with great bat speed and power i laid down on the 6" white shere and BAM! It exploded in my face! What the hell! The crowd burst in laughter and i was wiping the juicy remains of a jumbo white grapefruit that they cleverly painted! After a few minutes of wiping my face free of juice and seeds I raised my bat in victory and took one for TEAM!

Back in the 70’s and 80’s, Western New York / Buffalo area was a hot bed of great softball, both fast pitch and slow pitch ... I played both and was fortunate enough to see Eddie and his team ... King and his Court play here locally... what great entertainment. The best of the best made up a local all- star team and they couldn’t touch Eddie and it was great fun. I believe they even had their Court catcher - show our team how to go it, by catching a pitch from Eddie and then throwing the ball from home plate - clear over the center field wall for a “home run”... what an arm, over 300 ft. Away. Great video and great memories. Thank you.

Mine is a similar story as a lot of previous posters, I saw "The King and his Court" a couple of times in the early 60's while in grade school. They were impressive, indeed. Some of the stuff he did was done with the cooperation of the home team, such as when he would feign a pitch, but throw it behind his back and throw out a runner leaving first base. But the sheer athleticism was amazing.

Had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Feigner up close and personal for a game back in 1980 or so. His team came to my hometown and being a local baseball umpire, I was asked to work the plate for his exhibition. The man was talented and he was a very nice guy. He could throw true strikes from 2nd base behind his back. A lot of it was showmanship, but his talent was real. Amazing to see up close.

I saw King and His Court as a little boy at a park in Ossining NY in the summer of 1970. I had never seen any game at night and that was pretty exciting to a 6 yr old boy and the other thing I still remember to this day was how insanely fast the ball got to the plate with pin-point control. It seemed super-human at the time. Barely anyone made a contact and it was almost shocking when they did, Eddie was basically unhittable that night. Afterwards, Eddie and the rest of the team signed my program which, again as a 6 yr old was pretty thrilling. Great great great memory, thanks for posting this video.

I had heard a story from back in the '50's that Eddie was invited to one of the major league all-star games to demonstrate his incredible arm. He faced Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and Willie McCovey in that exhibition. He struck out all three, and only McCovey even fouled one off. I've not been able to confirm it, but I wouldn't doubt it.

We had some good fastpitch teams when I grew up in Flint, MI in the 60's - 70's and Eddie and his crew came here for a game at Whaley Park. I can't remember which team they played but I know they won a close game. Those were the days. There were some great pitchers and very good players here too. Two pitchers I remember are Owen Cole and Jim Doyle. My Dad played on a couple of very good teams also.

I grew up in Greenpoint Brooklyn, New York. I loved playing baseball as a pitcher & a centerfielder. So after being sick for approximately 10 days, my family doctor advised me to slowdown & go join my area little League. I weighed about 150 pounds & at 6ft 2 inches tall. So I became a coach in the Summer of 1967. The manager was a great manager but, my style of teaching & understanding of the game made me ask the incoming board of the directors for a chance at manager in the 1968 Season. Meantime, I arranged my 1st field trip to Shea Stadium in 1967. The current board approved it. I posted on the field message board, that any player coming must be in complete team uniform with hat. I was aware that players might make their team forfeit if they came. Not one player came from another team. Those players went to another game. Besides, The Pirates were playing The Mets in a twinbill. I told all the players that I was invited onto the field & that I could pick one of my players. I did & another manager who was my friend, asked if he could go with us. I said yes. But I didn't think at the time, if he should bring one of his players. So it was the 3 of us. We met Ron Swoboda, Ralph Kiner (Mets Announcer) & Roberto Clemente. I'm in photos with Swoboda & Kiner & my player & just when it was my chance to ask Clemente, the umpire says "Play Ball". He was curtious enough to shake my hand & said, sorry I have to go back. When I got home, my friends, neighbors & other kids, came up to me & said, they saw us on tv. I felt like a celebrity. That year (1967) we made no Divisional World Series. An I umpired games in any division but my own. An I raised monies for the league too. Then I waited the fall & winter of 1967, for word of a manager vacancy in upcoming 1968. In early spring 1968 nothing. Then in late spring I was given a managership & told to go get 2 coaches. I did & I got the kids together for 2 practice games. Then 2 exhibition game and we won both. The league has 2 halfs consisting of 9 games each. Gives teams that didn't win the 1st half, a chance at winning the 2nd half. Then it's a one game playoff. My team went 8 wins - 1 loss in each half. That's 16 wins - 2 losses; not including 2 exhibition wins. Then I learn that OUR LEAGUE was doing another fundraiser & that All managers from the T-shirt, Minor & Major divisions had to represent their team & play. When I heard it's Eddie Feiner King & His Court we were up against, I didn't want to play. In 1967, I heard of what he did to major leaguers. He struck them out. I didn't want my players to see me do bad, so I wanted out. My 2 coaches were 15 at the time. They couldn't play. I was 22 and a great hitter, pitcher & centerfielder at baseball. Not fast style softball. I heard the field announcer tell Feiner, throw him a slow pitch. He threw a ever so slow pitch & I hit it to the shortstop. Next time up I hit him fastball down into the ground & behind home plate. The I swung at his raising high fastball for Strike 3. I thought; at our next game that my players were going to let me have it. But in my 2nd inning in centerfield. Ed Feiner used his favorite homerun 22 Inch bat; going to thrill fans with his homer. Until this slim 6ft 2in slim centerfielder with his back to the wall & 210 dead-center, jumped to try & catch the ball. I heard it hit the top of my glove & figured it went over. When I came down, to my surprise I snow-coned it. That was the 3rd out. I knew then that I taught them to throw, run, hit, pitch & catch & I let them choose their positions. I had a swelled head caus of my catch & I knew that they wouldn't tease me next game. But a surprise happened to me as I ran in from centerfield. Mr. Feiner met me as I was about to place that ball near the mound. He motioned for me to enter their dugout & all 4 men signed that softball & official souvenir book. When I emerged from their dugout; those men led a standing ovation for me and the fans & players joined in. I NEVER FORGOT that moment. I managed for 15 more seasons & umpiring too. Then I decided to devote my time umpiring. I spent 27 years in BROOKLYN, N.Y. Then I moved to QUEENS,N. I picked-up where I left off. Occasionally I would work work 2 men games in MANHATTAN'S FAMED CENTRAL PARK. I've been doing this another 27 years for a total of 54 seasons. This was supposed to be my re-union year. Finding as far back as my 1st season. Thanks to Facebook & Messenger I have found many of them in their early to mid 60's. Many informed me of deaths of others. I know of some myself from drugs or alcohol. Many died from cancer.i devote my time on a way to promote baseball in Queen's County. Soccer & basketball pushed baseball & softball back to 3rd place. I hate that. One day I will donate my umpire uniforms, old fashioned chest protector & equipment bag & oh yes, that autographed ball & souvenir book; to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. It will be in a new wing on contributions in enhancing the game of baseball. Contact me at my e- mail: glusmj119@gmail.com. PS: sorry I wrote to much. Thanks for the GREAT MEMORIES. .

I had a fast ball, drop ball that tailed either left or right, 3 speeds of knuckle ball, the slow floater would "corkscrew" and hang forever. The fast was completely unpredictable. Had a riser that lifted from waist to over head. A curveball, 2 speeds...big looping rainbows. I should have continued but I broke my hand trying to barehand a line drive. Umpire once said he never saw a curve and I pitched the best game he ever saw. Made provincial but lost 1-0 in the finals.....or we'd been in canadian championship. I was all of 145 lbs and 25 years old. Miss it, but I'm 57 now and those are only memories now. I remember batters ducking out and having that curve come right back in. Once, the batter dinged himself in the face with a foul ball, the angle of curve was so extreme. Stretched them out with the riser, screwed them into the ground with off speed knuckles and slow curve. Miss those days.

Growing up all of the kids knew of Eddie Feigner, The King and His Court. Very hard to explain the admiration we all had for him. Fast pitch softball was extremely popular and there were very good teams everywhere. Everyone I knew just wanted the opportunity to stand in the box with Eddie. I never had the chance but did stand in with several very good softball fast pitchers. I was a pretty good hitter but they were all brilliant. Very hard to pick up the ball and it was passed you before you knew it. Remarkable speed. The good old days were the best.

A bunch of us guys from CDO high school in the early 1970's that played on the football team...sometimes like a dozen of us....would drive all the way south into town (Tucson much smaller then....and we were in the far north desert at CDO...lol) and hit those $.10 cent beer night Toros games. Sometimes we'd even run into our football and baseball coaches down there....and even though we were in high school still....sit with them and drink the s--t out of dime beers. (RIP Dean Metz...you were the greatest!). Then we'd hit the drive-thru window at the Jack inn the Box at Speedway / Park (by Univ. of Ariz.) and order 18cent cheeseburgers. Later on....we'd wake up with nice stout hangovers....smoke some ditchweed.....feel better....and soon tell anybody who asked "Man.....we had such a GREAT TIME!". We'd be ready to do the same dumb thing the next night. Obviously, much different time...a different era. Lots of those guys and their wives are STILL dear, dear friends. Yes...we've been Blessed.
