In short Overlord is a Love Letter to Dungeon and Dragon’s.

Overlord is something of a deconstruction of the Isekai genre in its traditional form. Typically isekai stories revolve around a conventionally attractive, yet somewhat generic looking, main character getting transported into a (typically) fantasy world, doing good deeds and saving the world. Overlord, as the title might suggest, is a story about a man with dubious morality getting transported into another world as a scary skeleton monster on a mad quest to rule the world.

All of the characters in overlord are outstanding that I almost remember all of their names :-)

Fun Fact: They switched the bands for the OP and ED in the third season. So in the third season the ED is performed by the band you've heard in the beginning. And the band you've heard last does the EDs of the first two seasons. I'd love to see your reactions to the EDs as well :)

Just a headsup to how Overlord light novels started. The author used to be a DM (Dungeon Master) of a friend circle he played pen and paper RPG's with but they peeled off one by one. He saw Isekai genre being too samey and as a goof decided to write "what if you were the villain instead of a hero" using his campaign ideas that he came up with. It started as a web series and got refined into novels later with different plot hooks but the idea of Nazarick (the big bad guild dungeon) and the main character bein Undead clinging to memory of what he had with said group of friends remained the core of the LN's. Sorry for incoherent post it's 7am and I'm just drunkedly watching overlord videos. Yes I'm that obsessed.

The light novel in my opinion is much better than the anime, mostly because there’s more info in the LN with the internal monologue

The unique characters, cast, and story Overlord has is unique to itself a lot in the way it is presented. In short, no not all isekai's are like this, just Overlord and some other Madhouse works.

Check out the endings if you want, they are great. The art is done by the light novel illustrator. Ending 3 is so good, only good thing that came out of that season.

overlord is one of the few anime with a villain as the main character isekai anime usually focuses one world building and as the character learns about the world he will eventually end up making enemies in overlord the main character is the villian and tries to take over the world for reasons

Overlord in the Light Novels is the best Isekai. Period. The anime didn't justify the LNs but I love them too. Actually I vibe a lot with Nazarick. XD

Isekai just means "another world." The anime industry has been flooded with this type of story in recent years, which is why it has become its own genre. The premise is that a person from our own world gets thrust into a new, often unfamiliar one. There are also a few reverse isekai where a person from another world comes to our own a la "the devil is a part timer." The "other world" of an isekai can be anything from sao's vr world to log horizon and overlords' realified games to alternate universes like in konosuba, no game no life, re:zero, etc. You may also classify a show like dr. Stone as an isekai for following many of the same tropes, though technically it does take place in our own world.

Your really missing out if you haven't actually read/watched the series imo. So much fantastic world-building.

It's not a game world, it's a whole new world. That's explained in episode two. If you pay attention to the butler's conversation with Ainz.

Overlord is such a good series, if you haven't started it i really recommend it. If you wanna know what it is about its a isekai where a guy who was a big gamer gets transported into a world where his npc servants become real and instead of doing your typical isekai save the world plot he decides he rather conquer the world it the search for his friends who once played with him. The light novel and show takes a lot of notes from dnd and it pretty much is a love letter to certain aspects of it

They're 3 types of ' isekai ' 1) Isekai: to another real world. 2) Gamsekai: into the game but it's fictional and mostly temporary. 3) Game-Isekai: MC plays lots of games is transported to another 'real ' world, which is similar/ like a game/ has fechures/ or MC uses gaming knowledge. These are my hade canon so.............

Overlord, what happened in this anime is that a player and his npc were transported to another world, that's why some of them look a bit strange since they were created by players. The protag is the squeleton(has you guessed), and this is an isekai where we follow the villain.

Isekai just means other world. And this series is kind of confusing because if you don’t think about it it seems like he was teleported into his game, but he and his in game guild teleported into another completely real world, so every being in the show is actually alive, not a game in the slightest, all the genocide and murder is real genocide and murder, not just killing enemies in a game.

Isekai is as a genre "Transported to a different world". Many series revolve around video games yes, but many others entertain the MC being sent to another real world Overlord is a mix of these and also a subversion of the typical isekai. Subversive isekai series tend to be the more popular and critically acclaimed, for the obvious reason of shows are simply more interesting when they break the mold. All the better when it's done well. If you want some good shows of the genre to watch, a good place to start are the shows featured in "Isekai Quartet", a official parody show which features some excellent shows, including Overlord

Since you weren't quite sure of what an isekai is exactly: An isekai (pronounced ee-suh-keye) is an anime where one or more characters are taken from their home world and put into a different world. This can be, and is in many popular isekai, a game world, however that is not always the case. For example, Inuyasha is, in fact, an isekai, though it was made before the term came into common use. Hope this clears up your understanding of what an isekai is. :D Also, if anyone wants to add on or correct anything I said, pls do

When it comes to isekai anime you often deal with a variety of characters, but it strongly depends on the setting of the show in question. In the case of 'Overlord' which is set as an elaborate adventure there's a vast story which is far from complete in it's anime form. 'Sword Art Online' (SAO) features a wide variety of characters, but it's set around human characters. 'Tensei shitara Slime datta ken' (SLIME) features a wide variety of species among it's characters as it's set in that sort of fantasy universe, where as Overlord and SAO are set around games. There's are others, like 'Log Horizon' (again, game setting) and 'Choujin Koukousei-tachi wa isekai demo yoyuu de ikinuki you desu' (different era, human world) that are smaller franchises by comparison and hence feature smaller character variations and character pools. However, it depends on whether you wish to include side characters or not. Overlord just features a massive pool of side/main characters because of how the arcs are set up. Essentially, 'isekai' means different world: sekai being world, and and adding that 'i' makes it 'other world'. Adding a double 'ii' makes it a play on words for a good world (romaji spelling). "Isekai, koko wa ii sekai" (Isekai Quartet)("Other world, over here is a good world").

Overlord is an isekai only by technicality. It really is just a regular fantasy story, with the advantage that the MC needs to learn about the world with the viewer making exposition easier to write, aside from that it is pretty much just a solid fantasy anime.

I am really in love with this series, it's different and you follow along with the monsters in the series. I recommend watching a couple episodes and see how you like it, if by end of episode 3 you aren't interested this series won't be for you. But for me, this is first anime that got me to pick up a couple of the mangas and a couple of the light novels, because I needed more information and to see where the story goes from where the anime ends.

Isekai translates to another world. There is also an anime about I strongly advise you to watch it. It is comedy, politics, philosophy everything you want to see in a show. It is one of my favorite anime. I would have to say darling in the franxx is #1 followed by re zero and overlord

You've said them look like League Of Legends Character, but they litterally are characters of a moba game named Heroes Evolved. They Ares skins for the champions.

Isekai just means ulternative world it doesnt have to be a game or non real world for example shield hero is an issekai but the main character just got summoned to another world that at least in the story was as real as our one. Overlord also takes place in a real world(real in the sense that it isint a game) but some of the characters there were summoned from a video game but most of the world is its own world.

Basically this genre isekai/other world anime, has people transported to or get stuck another world than their own. Most of the time it is a game or game inspired world. Popularized by Sword art online and Log Harrison (mostly SAO). This series is basically about a guy who plays a game, he is his guild leader n all of his online friends have moved on from the game cus life happens. It is the last day for the game and the servers were shut down. As he sits and wait to be auto logged out he noticed that he’s still sitting there after the timer. Some game functions are nolonger available and he has become the character he has been playing as. Along with that all the NPC him n his guild created are now alive and behave as their flavor text/personality write up dictates along with being loyal to him the guild leader. On top of that he is not in the regular game world, it seems he has been transported to another world entirely but has some similar mechanics to the game world. He needs to figure out what’s going on and how he wants to go bout it. Tried to be general n not spoil anything past the first episode lol

Isekai is a genre where the main character is transported, through some means or other, into a world different from their own. It can be a game, it can be reincarnation, it can be whatever. If it's about a character going to a different world than their own, it's an isekai.

If he is a dark evil character or not. My guess after watching the anime is both.
