The message was delivered on Sunday, May 19, 2013, during The Point, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.
SERMON DESCRIPTION
Many people do not understand the difference between spirituality and belief in God. Most Buddhists do not believe in God (they are Humanist) and yet they are world renowned for their teachings of spirituality and spiritual practices such as meditation. Brain science and evolutionary science has helped explain some of what is understood today as spirituality. As Pentecost is celebrated by Christians around the world, let's look at movements of the spirit from a Humanist perspective.

As a Pagan Atheist (yes, we do exsist) I have to say I can't seem to get enough of what the UU Church represents. I can understand why so many people have found a home here.

It took me over 40 years to find a church that I feel at home in. Thank you for this service and inviting us in to become part of the All Souls family. Big Dog

I live in Boise and they have a church here. I used to be a Mormon who lost faith. It's been one of the hardest things to go through. I've lost part of my identity. I think I might have found a new home. I know I'll be checking them out.

Being an atheist and attending a UU, I disagree. Too many atheist have left religion after abuse and don't need to hear anything about gods. I will skip anything with god.

I don't need a religious minister explaining humanism (atheist). You will never understand.

The concept is kind hearted here. However, it is not “how” an atheist interprets the words used. It is not our responsibility to bend on the things that have zero evidence. I’m curious as to why it has to be us that is asked to create excuses and made up translations to shift our view of the universe. I hear turn the other cheek. This is like asking someone from the lgbtq+ community to just pretend your straight when you are with us. That is as wrong as it gets for me. I could never ask anyone to pretend to ignore who they really are. Gods, religion, spiritual, church, these words are the ones that bring the baggage to this discussion. It seems to me that we have tried very hard to stop using certain words with awful baggage, most of us have been pretty successful at it. There are racial and gender slurs that most of us agree should not be used at all. They are older words that came from a place of harm and disrespect. That is why we do our best to not use them. The crusades, the slave trades, the 4800+ disproven fictitious gods and religions used to control populations, not to mention the number of spiritual nonsense used to create all kinds of fake medicines, health practices, and scans to rid people of their money, time, and their lives. Maybe these are the next words to remove from our language, remove this awful baggage, and move forward in a positive way, instead of asking atheists to bend our way of seeing these words as they are and enable the hiding of these obviously toxic words going forward. That is how I feel about this talk. I know the intentions of care and love that this came from. But from my examples, you can see why this is not the right direction toward progress, This is how we have covered things up in past and asking us to do this is more of the same.

Buddhists may not believe in God (I think there is some acknowledgement of Gods in Buddhist texts, but no commands to worship such gods). Reincarnation is a running theme in Buddhism however. I suppose they also acknowledge the impermenance of things (anatman). I suppose it might not... might not be necessary (reincarnation that is).

OK, I'm subscribed. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe, but the sermon was smart and I can't disagree. (How many of your congregants think that you are an atheist?)

SenorMorgenStern - He's half Jewish and most Jews are atheists as far as believing in a personal God. This is probably why Jewish people, even though they make up a tiny fraction of the population, have won almost 25% of Nobel prizes in science. As a comparison, Muslims, who make up a large portion of the population, have only 3 Nobel prize winners in science (less than 1%).
