THE SITE HAS CHANGED TO ALLSPORTSTUCSON.COM. ... Arizona's most impressive victory in the history of its program, beating No. 1 Kansas, which lost only one game in the 1996-97 season before facing the Wildcats in the Sweet 16. The win was the first of three against No. 1 seeds for Arizona en route to its only NCAA title.

@@alanrubenstein7618 Exactly! Not only his fourth FF, but done with two different schools! And that '97 Cinderella run was the sequel to his 1980 #5 line Iowa squad that pulled off three straight upsets over higher seeds and had Ronnie Lester been at full strength for the national semis, the '97 championship very well could have been his second! They still gave Darrell Griffith-led Louisville all they could handle before falling just short against the eventual champs

Asa USC Trojan, I could not agree more. By far the Best Tournament run by any teams I've watched ever, and I've seen many of UNC's, Kentucky's, Duke, nad Kansas run in the past, but nothing tops the grit of the 1997 Final Four UofA team. How many teams can say they went through 3 #1's?

Its great whenever he does that, moreso since his ego grew taking over the Tar Hole job! I at least didn't mind him at Kansas, but ever since he's been in Chapel Hill, he's thought his s--t doesn't stink! And he almost never credits the opponent - either he cries or blames himself for his team falling, never that the opposition deserved to win

Arizona actually almost repeated this accomplishment in 2005 against the No. 1 overall seed Illinois. Just like Kansas in 1997, Illinois had only lost once all year and was considered a Final Four shoo-in. They played Arizona in the Elite Eight, and the Wildcats surprised everyone by leading most of the way. Unfortunately for the underdogs, in that game Illinois managed to force OT and win it there. But it was still a very strong effort on Arizona's part.

That '97 Kansas team was the best team I have ever seen that lost that early in the tournament. I rank that team up there with '86 Duke, '91 UNLV, '96 UMass, '99 Duke, '05 Illinois, and '15 Kentucky as the best non-championship teams I have ever seen, but those teams all lost in the Final Four. Maybe the 2011 Ohio State team is the closest to this 1997 Kansas team, the clear-cut best team in the country all season that lost in the Sweet 16. But those Buckeyes were not one of college basketball's all-time best regular season teams like these 1997 Jayhawks were.

+walterlv01 Arizona was at least a good team in 1997. I can make an argument that an even bigger upset was URI over Kansas the very next year. There is NO WAY Kansas should have lost to Rhode Island in round TWO. This was a shocking upset but Arizona at least earned their way to a national title.

Yes quite a game and run that year by AZ. The next year they would be a prohibitive favorite to return to the final 4 if not repeat. However as 10 point favorites they would lose to Utah 51-76 in the elite 8, a game that is much harder to figure out than this one.

Personally feel that this upset doesn't get its proper recognition, that was probably Kansas best team ever. Also thought this was the best tournament run ever they upset #1 seeds to win it all, you deserve the title without dispute. This is also someone who is not a U of A fan (don't hate or love them, just not claiming to be a U of A fan)

Yes, there were a few tough years during the messy transition from the Lute Olsen years. But did you somehow miss 2009-2011? Sweet Sixteen in March 2010. March 2011, destroyed #1 Duke in the Sweet 16, and came within 2 points of going to the Final Four, losing to eventual champion Connecticut in the Elite Eight. Played below expectations last year, but Sean Miller now has the nation's top-ranked recruiting class for 2012 playing this year, currently ranked #9 in the country. Try to keep up.

True about the continued success! But Arizona's road block, and it's the same exact hurdle, has been the Elite 8! Since the national runner-up squad of '01! Elite Eights in '03, '05, '11, '14, '15 - all defeats! Ashame because in some of those seasons, they've been a FF pick of mine!

Jim Nantz is incorrect at the end. This was a big upset but the "biggest" upset of that tourney was Providence taking out Duke 2nd round.
@mam162
@mam162 8 жыл бұрын
+Dave Stetts In terms of seed disparity, yes. But KU was so heavily favored to win the national title that no one thought they could lose in the Sweet Sixteen. KU had only lost one game all year and the school chancellor had already announced that classes wouldn't be cancelled the day after the national title game. So this is still considered the biggest upset, just like the previously undefeated Kentucky team losing to Wisconsin was.
@darshloaf
@darshloaf 8 жыл бұрын
I can get behind that logic. It also makes me think of the title game in '99 in which no one thought 1-seeded Duke would lose to 1-seeded Uconn. I just thought Providence was undervalued as an elite 8 team that year. They really should've beaten Arizona too, Croshere was the top scorer of the tourney & fouled out that game via many questionable calls...I remember way too much from that tourney.
@bradlewis6514
@bradlewis6514 3 жыл бұрын
That really wasn't much of an upset! I'm a near lifelong die-hard Duke fan since I was 10 yrs old ('81-'82 season) and that was one of Coach K's best works! We had little depth, no height or quality big man and luckily won the ACC regular season! And we barely got past Murray St in the NCAA opener! Quality depth and experienced squads always do well against us and Providence, coached by X's and O's master Pete Gillen, was no exception! With Croshere, Derrick Brown and God Shammgod that Friar squad had more than enough talent to be on equal footing!
@darshloaf
