I may have been a RTT skeptic for a number of years in the past, but at this point I'm fully on board. We usually have one on our trailer, which is a lot more convenient than having one on your truck. But the 4Runner isn't a daily driver.
While there are a lot of reasons to like a Roof Top Tent, there are a few things that suck.
Hack #1: The Mattress
First, and easiest to fix is the mattress. I have this Smittybilt Overlander Gen 2 and another one from Tepui and they both have a hard, uncomfortable foam mattress. I bought a thin memory foam topper from Target. It's the thinnest memory foam I could find and it makes the mattress comfortable enough to get a good night's sleep. Cover it with a sheet and you're all set.
Hack #2: Stuffing
This style RTT that folds up is always a pain to get all the fabric sucked in. so you can close it. To solve this problem get a couple rock climbing bolt hangers. You'll need get the 1/2 hangers to fit the bolt.
Then just remove the main pivot bolt nut where the tent hinges and install a bolt hanger on each side.
Then use some 1/4" bungee shock cord and tie one end to the bolt hanger and one end to an accessory carabiner. Make it tight enough to pull in the sides of the tent. Clip it to the other bolt hanger and before you fold up the tent, slip it up and tuck in any pieces of loose fabric. The carabiner lets you unclip one side which you'll need to do to install any of the room options if you have one of those.
Hack #3: Compression
The last hack is to fix the problem of these janky velcro closures. If you leave bedding in the tent, it can be hard to get it compressed enough to close properly. Especially if you have the memory foam topper too.
To solve this, replace the factory closures with a footman loop and a cam strap. You'll need to drill holes and screw the loops in with sheet metal screws. You can use the d-rings at the top here, but if you put too much tension on them they'll rip out. If that happens you can add another footman loop there.
BONUS ROOF TOP TENT HACK
Some tents come with a shoe bag that straps to the edge of the RTT and is accessible from the top of the ladder. You also have the spring rods that hold open the rain fly awnings. I also like to have a door mat at the bottom of the ladder. These things can all be stored on top of the folded tent and below the cover. Once the cover is zipped into place, they have nowhere to go. Just don't let them fall on your head when you open it up!
That's it! Happy Camping!

I have a similar tent from OVS. This is one of the most useful videos I have seen in awhile. Never thought of the storing the shoe bags, awning poles and a rug right on top. Those are game changing ideas for a quick and easy tear down without misplacing things. Just need to remember they are there before setting up and catching them with your face!

Ive not had any issues which call for hacks 1 and 2 to be employed. But hack #3 is gold mate!

out of all of this, my take away is the great solution of the door mat storage. I have been rolling mine up and taking up space! Great simple solution.

I put the spring bars in the open hinge area when folded. I do like the cam strap idea. I have snap buckles on my cvt and already broke one.

Great hacks! These address some of the biggest issues I've had with my tent. Now the only two problems I still have are the noise when it's windy (so much flapping!) and drying it out in the winter when it's constantly raining. I think I'm going to move to a pop-up hard shell.

I have that tent. Purchased used for $600 but its all well taken care of. For the velcro tie downs, my replacement idea is to use buckles to just snap it to shut, snap it to remove.

Good hacks. I used to have e a yalima tent that had all the same issues. I did similar hacks. But instead out a self inflating matress. And electric blanket. . I just switched to the roofnes overlander. And most of those issues are gone. They sell a self inflating mattress. But I just added the one I've been using . Plus it's more aerodynamic

I just got my rtt and saw a hack where you push as much inward at the door as possible and it folds up like a champ , I put a condensation ,at under the matteress and that added 10mm then a closed cell foam to go under the original matteress and finally a fitted sheet to hold it all together . I just leave the duvet and pillows out on the back seat of my car and toss them in after unpacking the tent

Right on. Those velco straps are terrible. I like the idea of replacing the woth cam lock straps. I have 2 Tepui Ruggedized Autana 3s and a Roam Vagabond XL. Both have bungees inside that pull the sides in. I have found that construction is similar. The Roam has many nicer features, but the Tepui is much heavier duty. The tie down loops that pull the entrance over hang down are terrible on the Roam. Very weak.

Most hardshell tents address all these issues, minus the mattress, they all suck lol. I prefer the air mattresses like the iKamper or the exped. It will allow you to completely remove the foam and have much more room for bedding and pillows.

Man, I dont know what kinda whacko tents you have in the US but here in AUS every RTT ive seen has been so well designed even the cheaper ones which i recently installed on my Ute. Unclip the cover which is adjustable to suit however much bedding you put inside, then unhook a latch which lets the hydraulic shocks open the whole tent up for you.. less than 2 minutes and you're already climbing inside for the night..

You must be talking about hard top tents. All soft tops have these issues, especially the folding up issue. I am in Oz and have a rtt with these problems.

Buddy you listed a thin mattress as a downside to a rooftop tent? What other tents come with any kind of mattress? I'd take a crappy mattress over rocks in my back on the ground

I’m pretty simple, I wish your photography of the cam lock hack had been a little better. The angle was wrong to get a good look at exactly what you did and the tent flapping in the way didn’t help. It’s left me wanting a better view
