This video is a follow up to an initial review that I made of this roof top tent. Here's a link if you want to check out that video: • Naturnest Roof Top Ten... .
This video will answer some questions that people asked in the comments of that last video. I'm going to show you opening the tent and how easy it is to set up. I'll also show you the inside of it and how much bedding will fit when it's closed. Lastly, I'll show you the tent closing and how long that takes.
If anyone has any other questions, check out the other video or drop them in the comments below!
If you want your own Naturenest RTT, here's a link to the tent I have: amzn.to/3O2GCl0
Here's the other variant of the tent with the awning just off the back if you prefer: amzn.to/3O2tw7a
A few people have asked about mattress upgrades. Here are two I can confirm work.
So, if you want one that fills the tent completely the Sea to Summit is super comfy. It's also on sale for 25% off on Amazon right now but I'm not sure for how long: amzn.to/3UF58ga
I mostly go solo, so I'm currently using a Hest Foamy Wide Mattress (78" by 30"): bit.ly/4dMvunv
And here's a link to the patch panel: amzn.to/45tYDPD
Here's the sleeping bag I keep in it: amzn.to/3Za4M1j
Here's a small camping pillow that I like that would fit: amzn.to/3QZzDLU
Here's a link to a ladder bag that I picked up to keep the inside of my tent clean: amzn.to/3sLHqmz

Now that I've talked to a bunch of people who have these, it almost sounds like they've been adapting or slightly changing the tents. Thanks for the videos about this Naturenest. One of my concerns about RTTs is longevity, especially if left permanent on a vehicle. Thats why I really like the idea of the 8020 aluminum extrusion rails sandwiching the whole thing together and one simple main rubber seal between them. What exactly is the top of the shell made of? Is it aluminum?

I’m actually going to be changing up my setup when it warms up again. I had this solar panel from a previous truck but I want to go up to 200 watts so I went with this dual panel and controller setup because based on the dimension, they should fit on top with no problems. Here’s the link to what I bought (it’s also super cheap at just over $100 for both panels and a controller): www.amazon.com/dp/B0C9HMKCCR/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_G6S81YB7D26B0WB1PM82?linkCode=ml2&tag=allthingsov00-20

@@LostBoysRecovery Shoot. I think you’re right. I have a REDARC system that I’m using with mine anyways so I didn’t need it. You will need a set of these cables to be able to run both panels into whatever you use: amzn.to/41KMUuX. Then here’s the solar controller I ran before switching to the REDARC: amzn.to/3RGZfvN. If you need more length too, these extensions work well for taking the power from the panels into the controller, assuming it’s under the hood or far away from the panels: amzn.to/3tzThEO.

Thanks for these vids! Do you think this tent would allow a 6’2 person to sleep comfortably?
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 9 ай бұрын
No problem! I'm 6'2" and I sleep pretty well in it. If you lay perfectly straight, my feet do hit the "roof" where the clamshell connects, but you can either scoot right up against the screen (big side of the tent) or sleep slightly sideways (just slightly) to make it so your feet don't touch. Hope that helps!

Great video. Is the OVS awning attached to the RTT or is it on the bed rack?
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 4 ай бұрын
Good question. There's actually a set of bars that are part of the bed rack that kick out to the side to allow mounting of the awning beside the RTT. You could mount them to the RTT if you had hardware to get into the channels and attach it, but I didn't need to mount it directly to it because of those mounts on the bedrack.

Hello, Do you know if this would fit a Crosstrek? Thank you for the video and your time
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 3 ай бұрын
I think it may be a little long on top, but it would likely fit dimensions wise. The thing I would recommend is finding a Crosstrek forum or Facebook group to verify the best roof rack set up to support the tent. You'll want to check for dynamic and static load. The tent weighs about 170 pounds so take that into account when looking at racks. Not sure if the stock rack can support that type of weight, especially not dynamic (while in motion).

Can you show it under full conditions zip up? I'd really like to see it with the side and back windows closed for horizontal rain. In your last video, you showed how dark it was inside, but we couldn't see if the window covers are internal or external to the screens on the side windows. The back window cover is external to the screens. I can't tell on the side windows. Thanks for doing these reviews.
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 4 ай бұрын
Good question. So, the side parts of the awning do cover a pretty good amount of the windows and even in a downpour, I can probably zip them down 7-8" without any water intrusion thanks to the awning. I actually just noticed that at about 8 second in this video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qLhke7B7p7rRiGQ.htmlsi=DUnRU_CcAqF2tcX2) I have the tent opened in a downpour and I'm recording from outside of it in slow mo, so you can see how much coverage the awnings give on the sides. Hopefully that helps but ping again if you have more questions and I'm happy to help!

Thanks for the informative video! I do have a few questions though. 1. Does the tent come with provided hardware to mount to aftermarket roof racks like prinsu or victory? 2. For your solar panel setup, I see you mentioned to another commenter about the 200W panel, controller, and wiring, but will I need to purchase an additional battery to store the charge from the panels? 3. Is the LED strip inside of the tent plug and play into the solar panel controller? 4. How does one go about adding a USB port setup in the tent and integrate it into the solar panel power? Thanks in advance!
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 3 ай бұрын
Hey there, good questions. Answers below: 1. It does, but not exactly sure how those racks would allow mounting. What's provided are basically u-bolts so it should work with most racks. Not sure if there are proprietary mounts that would make it easier to mount to those racks, but there might e? 2. Yep, you would need something to store the charge from the solar. I would probably recommend a 100AH (I have a 200AH which is probably overkill) and I had this one which was cheap and great and also has built in battery protection so you might be able to forego a solar controller although I'd still recommend just getting a solar panel with a controller to be safe and protect the battery more: amzn.to/4a148b1. Here's the panel and controller I had and it was great for the money: amzn.to/43u9gSo. 3. The light is USB-A so you could plug it into a small battery bank or you could run power from your battery up into the tent and use that to power it. 4. For this question, it's basically what I mention in 3. Think of it this way, you'd have the solar running through a controller, into your battery. Then from the battery, you could find some sort of inverter or way to pull the power out and split it. I used something like this (amzn.to/3Vv3jTs) with some bigger gauge wire running to it from the battery and then it has AC, USB, and other plugs to utilize the power. Sorry, that's a lot, but it's not as complex as it seems. You basically need solar, then the controller to make sure you protect the battery, then a way to get the power out of the battery in a usable way. Hope that helps!

I sent a comment earlier today but do not see it, maybe it never went thru as I had iffy service at the time. I have a couple questions regarding how you attached the tent to your rack. After watching your first video, I purchased the same tent. I also have an xtrusion bed rack on my Gladiator. First, I also got the xtrusion brackets…did you just attach those to the hardware that came with the tent (that slides down the channel on the bottom of the tent)? If so, did you use 4 or 8 xtrusion brackets? Second question, as you have more experience with both the rack and RTT set ups, where did you position the xtrusion upper lengthwise crossbars? Did you put them directly under the RTT tracks ? I do like your build, even tho I am a Jeep guy, my other vehicles have all been Nissan including a Titan. I really like the new Frontier!
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 6 ай бұрын
Hey there! Good questions. I did use the stock Xtrusion brackets and I used 4. The hardware that came with the tent worked perfectly with the Xtrusion brackets with no need for modification. For the second one, I attached my brackets to the bars that go from side to side on the truck. So, the rails of the tent are resting on the horizontal bars, not the vertical ones. They are pretty close to them, but I don't know that they're doing anything additional to support the tent. The bulk of the weight is on the horizontal bars. Been probably 9K miles with a lot of offroading and no issues or deformity of the rails of the tent at all. Working great! Jeeps are nice too! But I've been a Nissan guy for so long I'm locked in, :D. Good luck with your build! I did film another video last weekend on the Xtrusion rack walking through it in a bit more detail and my goal is to get that up in the next few weeks so stay tuned and there'll be more info coming on that soon.

@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 9 ай бұрын
Hey there, you likely could mount it on the channel on the side of the truck if you had the right bolts and nuts that fit the channel and will go through your default brackets. I actually have an Xtrusion Overland bed rack and they make custom awning mounts that attach to their rack and stick up beside the tent and I have the awning mounted to that, but it's the same idea. Extrusion channels with bolts coming out of the extrusion and through the brackets to hold it in place. Hope that helps but let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey there, good question! It's actually been really solid. I did have it come loose one time, but it was my fault as I didn't have all of the channel nuts fully turned in the channels when I installed it. Oh, or do you mean in the tent? If so, I can’t find that info anywhere but I’ve had three people in it or about 500ish pounds and no issues.

Did you attached the awning to the tent as well?
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 2 ай бұрын
My bed rack has a proprietary system with some angled kick outs that come up beside the tent and the awning is attached to that.

Is your awning attached to the tent or your rack?
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 9 ай бұрын
It's attached to the rack. They have these kickouts with extensions that allow you to mount the awning outside the RTT and vertical to solve for the angle of the rack. It also gives you more room to scoot the RTT over so it's more centered.

It doesn't, but like most roof top tents, I just zip mine in through one of the zippered screens and it works great.

There’s a spot in the back wall with a pass through and I mounted the booster behind the backseat and ran the transmitter up to the wireless charging area in the truck.

I wish the awning could be removed & had a clear roof aka sunroof. Other than that, this is so close to being perfect.

I've had that same thought about the awning. Would be nice to zip it off and either replace it or at least get it into the garage or someplace to dry out. But, small price to pay for the coverage and the price of the tent, IMO.

@@AllThingsOverlandingagreed. Great price considering it's all aluminum. Is it possible to flip the awning over onto the top of the tent to allow maximum light in during a clear nice day

how tall of a person can sleep?

Good question. I’m 6’2” tall and my feet touch when my head is against the screen so I would say that’s about the max unless you’re solo and can sleep diagonally.

Can someone please answer a question I have before buying this. I have a 2002 Toyota Highlander limited Has the standard roof rack on top and wanted to know if I can attach this roof top tent to it or do I need to purchase a rack also? Any info would be appreciated Thanks!
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding 6 ай бұрын
If I had to guess, I would say that the stock rack is not rated or designed to hold the weight of this (or most) RTT's. In most cases, you'd have to get an aftermarket rack that is designed to hold and distribute the weight.

@@raggar101 Honestly, I’m not all that familiar with the Highlander but I’m sure there are some forums or Facebook groups for them with people that would know more about those specific vehicles and what racks are the best at various price points. Wish I had more info for you but I also don’t want to steer you in the wrong direction!

As long as you had a way to get the u-bolts around something it should. It's basically just two long sections of c-channel with bolts that drop from those and then secure via a piece of steel and nuts.
