Not everyone was made to be in front of the camera doing script work, but clearly they've asked all the Queens from this season to help out, and they did. It's more important that information like this gets out to those who are curious or need education, then whether or not someone can really read beautifully off the cue cards.

Please note that drag also existed in Japanese Noh theater (circa 14th century) where all the actors were male, but some wore female costumes/masks. Also the Japanese Kabuki (approx 16th century) did the same thing, but (instead of masks) with highly stylized makeup and a more comedic aspect. Silent-film icons Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel also did drag in some early films. (Obviously, pre-Code)! Anyone know of "Sylvia Scarlett", wherein Katherine Hepburn is in drag for the bulk of the film? 'Queen Christina", Garbo? 1991's "Switch" plays on the male/female body/psyche with Ellen Barkin playing a man in (literally) a woman's body. Early Grecian theater (thousands of years ago), relied on men acting as women (indeed, women could not even attend unless they were a courtesan or slave), although festivals that were solely for women may have had female actors. Mayan culture? We may never know a) if they had a form of theater, and b) what that may have encompassed since almost every trace (except for one codex) was destroyed by Spanish conquerors. Cross dressers: They range from female pirates to a saint (Joan of Arc) to rulers (Hatshepsut of ancient Egypt), Alexander the Great (he loved him some Artemis-drag!) So basically, from the very beginnings of entertainment (really recorded life), drag has been part of the culture. There is a long, rich, colorful, vibrant history of this art and this reality.

american drag QUEEN culture & history
@pelqel9893
@pelqel9893 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it was definitely skewed toward the American experience. They probably realized midway through researching that they had bitten off more than they could chew and decided to keep it US-focused with only brief mention of other (much-longer) traditions. I was surprised they didn't highlight Japanese theatre, and only a passing glance toward Dame Edna out of England's long tradition of drag in theatre.
@ArtemisScribe
@ArtemisScribe 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mean I was kind of expecting it to be American centred anyway but then adding in Dame Edna as if she was the first drag queen we ever had in the UK is kind of odd. I mean people have been doing drag at The Vauxhall Road Tavern in London for so long no one is quite sure when they started. And that's just one bar! And to not even mention Lilly Savage is probably a crime.

Zoe Healy and don't forget the legendary Danny La Rue 🇬🇧 and Babette🗼. And "drag" is a Polari (a gay slang created in Victorian London) for clothes as well, in use since the mid-1800s.

This is cool. I never would have thought that the word 'drag' had that background as you've learned me today. I had to laugh a bit because it actually is so obvious now I know it. I'm loving the different ways all drag queens look like in this video btw. Very refreshing actually.

For the longest I had a hard time understanding drag because as a sic woman I felt as if my identity was treated as a performance or a costume that men can just put on or take off but I'm starting to appreciate it and educate myself about the things I don't understand yet❤️
