Can diamonds be recovered using normal methods like sluicing and panning? Yes! Are there better ways to capture diamonds from gravels? Yes there are, and we are going to look into that. In this video we are talking about recovering diamonds from gravels. First, diamond bearing gravels are an important part of world production. Alluvial diamonds in gravels are widespread in the US - CA, CO, WY, Midwest. They are found in low levels to be sure, but they are there. During the Calif. Gold rush, hundreds of diamonds were found by the gold miners. Diamonds are occasionally found in gravels in the Midwest that have been carried down from Canada in glacial gravels. They can also be found in gravels in Canada and Australia, but there are millions of artisanal miners currently working to recover diamonds in the developing nations. This includes places like S. America, India, Indonesia, but especially in Africa. The millions of artisanal miners work on a small scale and feed themselves based on the diamonds they find. All combined, their production is large, adding up to about 15 to 20% of the world’s total production. Larger scale commercial miners who work diamond bearing gravels on a bigger scale add another 10% of total world production. So diamond bearing gravels are truly an important part of world production.
