Tom Petty met with rock journalist Lisa Robinson backstage at one of his shows for an interview on April 30th 1985. During his Night Flight video profile - Petty was still promoting his latest album on the Southern Accents Tour (Petty later told Rolling Stone it was his “concept record about the South”) - he talked openly about his songwriting process, his favorite music decade (the Sixties, naturally), what it was like making music videos, and other topics of interest.

Tom had no fancy gimmicks, no ego trips, no extravagant stage shows, and that's what I love about him. Just a hell of a nice, cool, funny, laid back guy, who wrote the best songs, and enjoyed what he did. I am so greatful I was alive at the same time as this wonderful soul and got to enjoy his masterpieces. He knew what he wanted in life, went for it and achieved it

I love when he says how shy he is, how he wants to hear hits when he goes to concerts so yeah, he’ll play hits for the audience . This is just such a low key natural conversation, it’s a far better interview than it seems at first. He says so much in that easy way of his. How can you not just love him?

Such a fun interview-her questions were well thought out and didn't feel so scripted, and he was so laid back and engaged with her. He was one of the coolest mofos ever, such a cool rock star. He was a wonderful lyricist and songwriter, and his death hit me hard. We shared a birthday.

Tommy always reminded me of the early lines of Bruce Springsteen's Candy's Room: "There's a sadness, hidden in that pretty face. A sadness all her own, that no one can replace." I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that in him. :-)

My favorite era of Tom's career and life, he was cool AF especially in the early-mid 80s and everything about Southern Accents just fascinates me. It really was one of their experimental albums and my first memory of Tom's music was being spooked by the "Don't Come Around Here" video on VH1!
@sandgroperwookiee65
@sandgroperwookiee65 5 жыл бұрын
I get what you mean about being spooked by it, but for me it was the Music, firstly that 'spooked' me.(It was the sitar ..being an alien instrument I reckon) But I loved its tempo. It really winds up & kicks ass! A really fucken sad loss to lose a good honest bloke..& to not havin Tom still creating.❤🎩

Him wrapped in the Confederate flag would be cancel worthy now. I’m from not far from where Tom grew up and there was no racism in his thoughts or anyone’s. That was being southern then. Times change fast.

He himself raised the topic at a concert a few years back when a fan threw a Confederate flag bandanna at the stage. He stood on stage, picked it up, and basically announced that they now realized it was not such an innocent symbol and that they weren't doing that any more.

My theory is he wrote You Got Lucky about Mike that’s why they didn’t play it for so long. Mike wrote Boys of Summer and tried to give it to The Heartbreakers and Tom didn’t feel it so Jimmy Iovine recommended Don Henley and it was the biggest hit of his solo career. There was a lot of pressure to follow up Torpedoes and there definitely was some jealousy involved. Mike will never admit but I’ve read enough to have a strong argument. The fact is they both got lucky and we the world got lucky. Such a great band.

This is great interview, good questions and answers. It's quite long, too. I'm wondering what point in his recovery he's at in this video. He's very subdued but still so interesting and engaged with the conversation. Going through the playlist is also fascinating, to see this wonderful man at different points in his life and to see what parts of his personality change with time and circumstance and which are constant.
