Also when presented with the 4th note light is more concerned about being right and seen as smart vs ask why did L withhold the 4th note. This shows light has a complex about winning and being right which fits kiras profile.

I think it's funny he could have avoided getting caught if he just lived a normal life and continued after graduation when he could relocate without raising suspicion.

He was insulting Light's intelligence to get him to reveal that he's a narcissist. Light falls for it when he says "my deduction was perfect". Even when there's no reason to, Light has to prove he's smarter than L. By proving Light to be a narcissist, it increases Light's chance of being Kira because, by Light's own admission, Kira is trying to taunt L.

Just now watching this show, and this is seriously one of the best anime I've ever watched.

Honestly the funniest thing is that Light fits the Original Suspect Range and later on Light basically solidified L's suspicion by being the only person in said group smart enough to hold a conversation with him.

L is just trolling Light to test his personality traits. The fact that Light tried to double-down instead of admitting he was wrong... that was his mistake.

A lot of people like this clip because of what it says about Light, but not too many consider what it's telling us about L. This is actually an allegory for his position in the show. He offers Light 4 notes and tells him to piece together a coherent message with them, and show's him how its next to impossible to decode a scenario when there's an entire part of it you simply couldn't have known. In essence, that's what did L in. He was a mad genius, and yet he couldn't piece together the full message because there was a "4th note" that he had no way of knowing about. It was a rigged game.

Alright, I've seen a lot of comments completely, meat riding L and not being fair at all to Light, saying things like L is far smarter than Light, and it isn't even remotely close, etc etc etc and so I found somebody on Quora who is actually being more fair to Light it is written by Valor Stein: People who watch the series tend to overestimate the idea that L is smarter than Light solely based on the premise that Light had an advantage with his Shinigami powers. That, however, does not factor into the equation, or the ultimate outcome. Just as Light had Shinigami powers, he had restrictions on him- He needed the a name and the face of the individual in order to kill somebody. Furthermore, since he wanted to live longer, he played the game of Shinigami in difficult mode, without being able to access one’s names and faces directly. L, on the other hand, had power over all the police in Japan,FBI, and such. In terms of research, investigation, espionage (cameras and bugging devices) and etc., he had quasi-omnipotent power to prove that Light was Kira. Therefore, if we consider things from this perspective, we will realize that L was not so poweless in comparison to Light, as even though Light had the powers of the Shinigami, he had restrictions on him which incapacitated him from killing L directly (which then would be a direct advantage). L’s thought pattern which lead to Light being the only suspect was terrifying. His deduction that Yagami was Kira was based solely on the evidences that NO one else could have been, given how FBI characters were the ones being targeted. However, even though he knew Light was Kira, let’s not forget how LIGHT plays out in all of this. L, throughout the whole series, sets up traps and tests Light Yagami. He blatantly states that he is L in front of Kira in order to get a reaction, tests him in a tennis game, tells him to become the successor of L in case he dies, and such. With all these traps, he believes that he may reveal that Light is Kira. Now, L is not only appealing to evidences and logic. He is appealing to see the micro expressions of the individual to his questions. That is something you barely can control, unless you are in the right mindset. Therefore, in order to overcome the traps set up by a highly intelligent person, you would have to have equivalent or higher intelligence to not fall for those. Light did exactly that. Not only has he kept his calm, firm posture when being taunted to L (who was in a much safer spot to be himself and act as he wishes), but also answered the questions in a manner that would be impossible to say that he was Kira. With this in mind, we can not only deduct that Light is incredibly intelligent in its contingency planning, but emotionally as well. Although he inevitably left clues that he might be Kira, he did not leave any PROSECUTABLE evidence that he could be Kira. In his room, he acted with perfection to show he was nothing but a student, utilized the death notes rules to its maximum extent, and so on. His execution was immaculate and PERFECT. To the point that not even L could prosecute him (as his plans were just too perfect, flawless, to leave a trace or clue of his endeavors). Let’s not deprive the fact that Light was also capable of manipulating a Shinigami into working for him. Furthermore, the shinigami is not a dumb one. It is Rem. Light managed to maneuver Rem before it could even realize it was being manipulated. The second Rem realized that Light had already masterminded his death, he also understood how cunningly he had set up the trap so that both L (which is immune to Light since he does not possess the eyes to see his name) and Rem (who could kill Light at any point given that he is a shinigami) would exterminate each other, which were at the moment Light’s biggest threats. The only way to kill L without being suspicious would be to utilize the Shinigami. The only way to kill the shinigami would have to be forcing the Shinigami to die for someone else. Kira took advantage of both of these weaknesses to kill two birds with a single stone. Furthermore, it would be ludicrous to not mention how he masterminded his plan to be seen as innocent. To prove himself to be innocent, he realized that he would have to make himself literally innocent. How would he do that? Simple. By literally being innocent. By erasing everything he has done, and forgetting about it. So, he plans a few kills weeks before he erases his memories, tells himself that he will be locked up so that deaths will still occur while he is locked up (showing that he is not Kira), understands that L is really good at reading others people intentions and therefore would be fooled by the oblivious Light, instructs the Shinigami to give the book to a greedy, power hungry individual, predicts that Light himself will be freed of prison due to the lack of proofs by L, which therefore leads to himself assisting L in finding ‘’Kira’’, leading to the arrest of Higuchi, which means that the Death Note would be taken from him and therefore end up in L’s hand, which would therefore end up in Light’s hand, which then leads to him recovering the memories at the exact moment when Higuchi is being imprisoned, which leads to him predicting that he would utilize the same watch which would contain a piece of the death note that would allow him to kill Higuchi. Not only he manages to predict how L and everyone else will react, he reads HIMSELF into the future, 100 steps ahead. There has no been any showcase that L has contrived as meticulously as Light has. At the end of the series, it is also apparent how Light’s intelligence is superior to L. When Light was exposed to be Kira at the end, Near said that himself plus Mello would be enough to pass L. This implies that Light was exposed due to intelligence of both, which if combined, were superior to that of L’s. However, let’s not undermine the fact that Light’s plan, in its purest form, did NOT fail. He predicted accurately what Near would do, exactly. Light, before Near himself thought about it, predicted that the latter would end up deducting that Takami would be the best fit to fulfill Kira’s wishes. Thus, realizing that Near was going to change the papers of the Death Note for fake ones, told him to create a fake death note and start annotating on it. All while pretending to not have realized that Light was aware of Near’s actions. How ridiculous that is? Had Takami not acted on his own and killed the woman (which Light told him over and over not do), the SPK would have not realized that Light had created a fake death note and that would result in all members of the SPK and everyone else opposing Kira getting assassinated. Light’s supreme, uncontested sagacity and ability to read into the future 100 steps ahead of anybody else, and into all all individuals minds, is unrivaled throughout the series. The epitome of masterminding. Light Yagami, without a doubt, is the most perspicacious. Had the author not decided that his evil endeavors would have to end, he would have certainly lived and reigned as Kira. This was not a logic test. Many people get this wrong about L - it was a gotcha puzzle, designed to get a reaction out Light. Instead of being annoyed at L for winding him up, being humble & admitting it never crossed his mind or even asking if there's a fifth card - Light doubled down on his stance. "But given the information presented my deduction was perfect." Light is hyper-focused on beung correct about this. It's matches the psychological profile L has created for Kira.

So I believe the author stated that L is the highest intellect in the series and that he was smarter than Light. He also knew Light was Kira for a decent amount of time but he had an obsession with proving he was right. This obsession led him to make poor decisions like letting Light go a number of times. He felt the *need* to prove it to everyone else through facts and logic rather than just putting the bad man away.

For those like me who didn't get it the first time: In the Anime, the photos L handed to Light are numbered 1, 2, and 4. The game that L was pulling was to see if Light would've noticed the numbers. If you were any other person, you would have looked at the front and back of the photos, saw the missing number, and asked for the fourth picture. Light, of course, wrote the notes. He knew that there *was* no fourth note. Light's mistake was that he was too confident, he didn't even hesitate to boast about the message and what it could mean. L forged the 4th photo because he was betting that Kira would be overconfident and explain the exact right solution, something only Kira would know. While it isn't physical evidence to lock L up, he was only fishing to see if Light was indeed Kira.

I just realized somethong wild. This scene foreshadows Light's defeat at the hands of Near. How many death notes are there in the series? Three. Plus a fake. Light never even considered that possibility. Light also goes on a monologue in his head about how Near was no L because he didn't even consider the possibility that there might be another Death Note. Except Near did. And once again Light failed to consider that this might be replaced too. Near's deduction was perfect, while Light's was not.

Clue number 2,000 of light being Kira to L and I don't see many talk about this: The way Light reacts to things emotionally. Light always reacts so nonchalantly to the message and the mentioning of Gods of Death like it is just Tuesday to him. I am not claiming to know anyone's culture but I feel like it is a bad Even someone as fearless as L reacted in a puzzled manner a few times while Light was just like yeah it is another tuesday and he just assumes there are three cards. The only time Light really reacts however is when someone questions him on his decisions or competes with him and that gave it away big time. L is not only a genius when it comes to IQ but rather he is also able to read people and how they behave and Light just fits the bill as he is the only guy in the ball park of L's intellect and doesn't like losing.

L caught Light's lies so many times. Pretty sure he already knew that Light is kira. Only problem was that he didn't had a solid evidence. Now the series was made by a Japanese guy. Story could have ended if it was written by aa guy living in a country where police is corrupt. Ending would have been like L just tell police guys ro beat the sh1t out of Light until he confesses everything.

Although someone who didn't know FOR SURE that there were 3 only notes might ask "are you sure there isn't a 4th note". One might also think that L wouldn't be deliberately withholding evidence when trying to have someone decipher something. Although asking about a 4th note would be the safest response for light, him not considering a third note (even though he knows for sure he only sent 3) wouldn't be unnatural even if he wasn't Kira

It's amazing how L tests Light in this scene. There's several tests he's doing simultaneously. It's super impressive when you think about it. He's judging Light's personality while seeing how Light reacts to the lettters. The fact that Light found a seemingly nonsensical message and still decided it was the final message probably made L feel that he must've had a reason for it other than a wild guess. Like maybe... he wrote it. L was certain from the very start, and Light was too arrogant to notice.

It’s crazy how he used a fake letter to add more onto the fact that Light is Kira man basically said “ah yes you were wrong because I tricked you but you would have only known if I had tricked you if you were Kira so the fact that you were clueless to the fact that my fake letter existed proves that you are Kira.”

L was an absolute genius in the series, caught Light several times but had very little evidence to back it up. It's a shame that Light was saved by plot armor and for L, the plot was against him furthermore he was against not one but two kiras working together, the second kira having the shinigami eyes put him at an absolute disadvantage still he managed to outsmart them, L's only downfall was the fake 13 day rule and when he found the solution to that problem, Rem knew it was over for Misa and Light so he had to kill him at once. L deserves all the love and respect in the series, he didn't deserve to die. L>>>>Light>Near

Most people don't understand this scene, and it's partially the fault of the anime adaptation and the English translation. In the original manga scene, in the Japanese version, L gave Light 3 notes, that contained the original message hidden by Yagami. But L gave them in a specific order and added numbers on the back of the cards. Because of the neat way Japanese language forms sentences, the message read *"L, did you know gods of death, who eat nothing but apples...".* In the way that L gave cards to Yagami, the sentence was unfinished and suggested a continuation. But Light, instead of reading the message as anyone else would, being the original writer of the secret message, rearranged the cards, to fit the sentence that he himself intended, which read *"L, did you know, that gods of death eat nothing but apples?"* That is what reassured L in his suspicions against Light.

In my opinion Light was smarter than L. Bc L is about 7 years older than Light,L has solved many many problems before that put human life into jeopardy and still for quite a long time Light worked alone and was 17 and L still couldn’t figure him out with his Task-force. Seeing the amount of Mysteries and problems L solved and was way more experienced and had solved WW2 when he was 8, alight did a perfect job as a 17 year old genius who only had solved one case before and was just getting good grades and had to deal with alot of things like killing and not having his privacy

Its sad that L was holding out hope that Light wasnt Kira even when his instincts were screaming that he was. He found a rare individual that could understand him and match his intellect, too bad Kira never really wanted to be friends.

It’s been nearly a decade since I watched Death Note and I agree with the sentiment on the comment that L is smarter than Light. But this has got to be one of the weakest “traps” L set up for Kira because reacting the way Light did would not necessarily incriminate him as Kira. Imagine if you were in Light’s shoes, just as smart but innocent, and you were trying to figure out who Kira is. You get a bunch of document evidence, you study them, and try to make sense of it. Then you notice a pattern or a secret message. You then show your finding to your boss and instead of telling you you’re wrong, and that there was actually more evidence that was just found, he accuses you of being the criminal. Imagine if every detective become reluctant to work with limited evidence because if they get it wrong, they become guilty of the crime they’re trying to solve. It’s pretty common to work with limited evidence and to collect more as cases progress. Finding ALL the evidence for a case is also probably unlikely or impossible in most situations.

I just realized that this moment connects the fact that L has always known when to believe that there’s another “note” a.k.a Kira.

The only thing I hated about the show is the fact L just knew Light was Kira with absolutely 0 proof. He was too stubborn to change his mind, anyone would’ve stopped suspecting light right from the start but the script demanded L knee Light was Kira from episode 1.

In my opinion Light was way smarter than L because it was too difficult to cover up a lie which was obvious to L. From the start L knew Light was Kira but wanted to find more evidence and Light had to constantly play games like he did by abandoning the death note. Light is definitely the smartest in Death Note.
