First conceived by Roald Dahl in his 1964 novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", Willy Wonka has made a lasting impression as one of the most recognizable figures in fiction. Of course, being nearly 60 years old, the character has seen many different design changes and iterations.
I became a Willy Wonka fan in late December of 2021, and the entirety of 2022 has been an absolute roller-coaster with me gaining and updating all kinds of Wonka knowledge, big and small. One little character has been able to become the highlight of my year. To celebrate this year coming to a close, my final video for 2022 sets off to rank (almost) every major, official version of Willy Wonka, starting from the book's initial release to the most recent version approved under the Roald Dahl estate. How many are there? Let's find out!

While I disagree heavily with the Depp Wonka ranking - it’s honestly my favorite version of Wonka, and the film as a whole is highly overhated - this was a good ranking video overall. It’s nice to see things from the perspective of a diehard Wonka fan, even going into a lot of other Wonka iterations that I haven’t even seen before - it’s interesting for sure!

You being such a diehard Wonka fan, it almost shocks me you haven't even mentioned West End/Broadway Willy Wonka. Yes! There is in-fact a handful of official CATCF/WWATCF musical adaptions, with the most recent show going on world tour. While it's hard to find full clips for the West End version, the Broadway version is up on KZfaq if you just look up "Willy Wonka Musical Full" and click on the video with "Slime Tutorial" in the title. You should give it a watch if you have the time! I won't spoil anything, but being a western adaptation of West End, it takes a lot from the 1970s Willy Wonka movie, so I feel you'd enjoy it, along with the new things it brings with it!

Honestly I'd highly recommend watching the West End version of the musical! The first picture you used when talking about Broadway Wonka was actually Douglas Hodge, the original West End Wonka - the one with the Goatee. West End was the original iteration of the musical and differs a LOT from the Broadway version and genuinely I think it's the better version of the musical. Broadway ended up changing a lot of songs and story beats, as well as drastically changed the set designs and I think it suffered a lot in the end as a result. There's a version of the West End Production up on KZfaq now called 'Chocolate Top Hat Guy Kills Children The Musical' with Alex Jennings as Wonka instead of Douglas Hodge, but it's the best and only full recording of the West End production out there now that I've been able to find. I'd also recommend listening to the official soundtrack of the London Musical with Douglas Hodge as Wonka, it's absolutely FANTASTIC.

You do realize the reason that the subplot of Wonka’s father was added, was because Felicity Dahl wanted to give Willy Wonka a reason as to why he was giving all these clear morals and lessons to each of the children. Wonka had no character ark in the book so he technically stayed the same throughout the entire thing. While I don’t agree with how Burton took it, it made us feel sympathetic for Wonka as we understand why he became the way he is. Although I would’ve perfected if they kept him a completely a mystery to us. As I felt Roald Dahl was just trying to follow in the steps of Dr. Seuss. Leaving it for the interpretation for our minds as the readers. While yes I didn’t like the whole thing with the flash back, but it did touch up on a few things with Willy Wonka being a troubled person with trauma, and making candy as a gateway out for his childhood trauma.

Ok, as a huge Willy Wonka fan, I do agree with you on a lot of the points that you made about the different versions of Wonka! And to be honest, I like a lot of the different versions (except for the ones that are in inappropriate media. I honestly don't know why someone would put such a charming character like him into a movie that has inappropriate or non-family friendly content in it. He does not fit into that at all! It's absolutely disturbing! Ahem! Anyways..) From what I'm seeing, the Retro Nestle Willy Wonka is definitely one of the best I've seen! By the way, I had no idea that there was a Swedish version of Willy Wonka that got his own film! I'm honestly a bit upset that I didn't know about this! Then again, there's quite a bit here that I did not know about the different versions of Willy Wonka, which is crazy and as a huge fan of the story, it makes me interested in learning a lot more! (You know, the more family friendly stuff! Not the inappropriate or scary, unnecessary, made-up stuff, you know??) :):):) By the way, I myself am trying to create my own version of Willy Wonka for my own series(which I really hope to bring to life soon!), and I really want my version to be as perfect as possible without any serious problems. I really want my version to be unique, but also have a few hints of the past versions of him to be mixed in too, cause not only do I feel like that would be interesting to add, but it would also give a nod to some of the best Wonka portrayals and versions! So, based on all the knowledge you have on the past versions, what do you think the best version of Willy Wonka should be like?? :):):)

I agree with the Wonka needing to be appropriate, and its another issue I have with 2005 Wonka, his design just does not feel appropriate for a family film. As for your version of Wonka, I feel like the best versions have balance. A balance of color and tameness in the color pallet. A balance between warm softness and strange unease. He genuinely cares about children but isn't going to tolerate any bull coming from them either. As for design, I personally would recommend a mix of Nestle Wonka and Swedish Wonka; a similar color pallet to that of Nestle Wonka, he makes silly faces like Swedish Wonka but I would recommend you cut back on the absurdity of the faces since I feel like the faces of Swedish Wonka highlight a sort of "evil villain" side, a bit too much so (so I guess more like Tom and Jerry Wonka who is also known for making faces). As for nods to previous versions, I would recommend more subtle nods to older versions of Wonka. Have some of the candies be nods to the old Nestle candies, for example.

i do very much agree with the 2005 version and just like you I don't think it's Depp's fault, If they kept him like in the original book or in the 1971 film where he was not an absolute jerk who... made me cringe a lot of the times.. he could pull it off... also yeah his design looks stupid...like make a candyman look like he had candy sprinkled all over him with many different colors and patterns- not this weird depressing design which sure works for the film specifically but that's the problem... this film I don't like that much- sure it's fine in some aspects but then it sucks in other aspects and since Wonka is basically the main character- it would kinda suck to have your main characters writing suck-

Personally speaking, I actually do enjoy watching both the 1971 movie as well as the 2005 one. There are things in both I enjoy, and I will admit neither are exactly faithful adaptations of the book. However, if I had to choose one I'd watch on repeat, I'd go with '71. The 2005 movie is more faithful in a lot of aspects, and I don't mind some of the updates they made, but the part where this movie loses me is its take on Wonka. Like you said, nothing against Johnny Depp, but they did not take a good direction with the character. It's a shame, because they were supposedly going to go for a more faithful take on Wonka, complete with a long goatee, but it was vetoed because they didn't want the character's design and personality to seem too similar to Jack Sparrow. Plus, if Dahl had an issue with the Wilder movie not having much focus on Charlie, than he would've flipped if he learned about Wonka's new backstory. Again, the 2005 movie is a guilty pleasure, but I wish they made Wonka more faithful and Charlie more fleshed out of a protagonist. Though, switching subjects to the musical version, I'd like to see you check them out, but I'll let you know there's currently three (technically four) different versions of the official musical, and Wonka's pretty different in personality in each one. First, there's the original 2013 London musical, which originated on the West End (basically the UK's equivalent of Broadway), which has a cast recording, and a few bootlegs floating about (three different actors played Wonka when it ran, with Douglas Hodge originating the role and looking closest to the book, even having a prop goatee and mustache, and the most high quality bootleg has Alex Jennings, who's a fun Wonka, but his singing could use some work, with Jonathan Slinger being the last to play him on the West End). Next, there's the Broadway version, which retooled the musical for Americans and made a lot of changes that were unpopular, like making the lavish sets "metaphorical" so that there's literally one prop in each room of the factory so that audience can use their imaginations to fill out the blanks, and making certain things more like Wilder film, such as Mrs. Bucket being a widow, and removing Charlie's opening number in place of "The Candy Man" . And while the London one updated things to have Violet be an airheaded celebrity and Mike into violent video games, the Broadway one added more references to social media, and Mike's introductory song was changed to something which contained not-so-subtle references to Trump (and for a few shows, Mike was one big Trump reference before they toned it down). They also cut Violet's Oompa Loompa song and replaced it with a song about the backstory of the Oompa Loompas, which was pretty weak. The technical "third" version of this show was the US Tour, which tweaked a couple of things for the better, such as making the sets less minimal and replacing Mike Teavee's song, yet again, this time with a lot less Trump references. Either way, you can find bootlegs of both the Broadway and US Tour floating around as well. The final and current version of the musical is currently touring in the UK, and it mixed things from both the London and Broadway versions, while adding in new stuff. For one, while Mrs. Bucket is still a widow, Charlie's opening number has been restored, as well as the original introductory song for Mike being restored, just being renamed from "It's Teavee Time" to "The Teavee Family". The sets and costumes are also completely new, with even Wonka having a new design. They also gave Violet a new Oompa Loompa song, and completely reinvented the Oompa Loompas to be clockwork robots who look like Wonka, so they don't have to explain their controversial backstory. Another thing unique to this version is that they have either a boy or a girl portray Charlie, depending on the performance. Unfortunately, I only know of one bootleg of this version, but it hasn't popped up on KZfaq, yet. However, there is a trailer for the UK Tour, and there are screenshots of the bootleg, which I'll share here: Here's the trailer (despite the long hair, the Charlie in this trailer is a boy): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bd-Bm8Zm05OnoWw.html And here's the screenshots of the bootleg (which had a girl Charlie that performance): www.flickr.com/photos/189616222@N05/albums/72177720303997406/with/52525477559/ Here's a video going into more detail with the changes: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9KCZ5SKvK-wfok.html And here's a separate video which talks about the history of the 1971 movie, with a bit of the 2005 movie: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/icuHjcVhnaqrZHk.html I hope this was helpful, and if you're interested, I know of few more Wonka-related things, like these sceenplays for the 2005 movie. The first is from a very early stage of production, before Burton came onboard, and the latter is a later version that's closer to the final screenplay: drive.google.com/file/d/1ZCQ8kTRF9yjVurwh8D84J90oDDPEjDTw/view drive.google.com/file/d/19SvU4hPm-fqeOBMiOQLnxpjuZkun1CiR/view Hope you have a good one, and I look forward to more of your videos.

@@TheGamingManiacDS I think she was being nice, to be honest. Dahl was notoriously fickle when it came to changes, and as I said, the added stuff with Wonka's backstory probably wouldn't be something he would've liked. The only adaptation of his work he liked was the original animated movie of The BFG, which stuck extremely close to his story and its dialogue.

Despite the controversy of the writer himself of Roald Dahl, I think that the book version is the best version of Willy Wonka. Separating the art from the artist is very important. The way the book feels is so much like you go back to being a child, and the character of Willy Wonka is the best thing done on this book. If you don’t believe me, read the book again, or listen to it on audio book, and just don’t think about the controversy for a minute.

If you’re going to look into the musicals there are two. The British version and the Broadway version. The British version seems to follow the book while the Broadway version follows the Gene Wilder film. Personally I think the British version is better. The Broadway version was pure disappointment. Especially after seeing the British version. Just look up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory/ Wonka slime tutorials and check it out.

I watched the Broadway version with Christian Borle a little bit ago and... Yeah it was kind of disappointing. Overall I think it's "okay", I laughed at quite a few of the funny quips from the characters, I liked a handful of songs, but if you want me to be honest, Broadway Wonka (who I call "Vanilla Broadway Wonka" when in context with other versions of Wonka from the musical-verse) was a flop. I'm a fan of his design, they thankfully don't add a bunch of needless lore to the character, but I REALLY don't like how they structured Broadway Wonka's attitude. It feels like they drained all of the negatives of 2005 Wonka's design and backstory (I love Johnny Depp but his version of Wonka is... just the worst) and didn't know what to do with all that excess negativity so they just poured it into making 2005 Wonka's attitude problem even worse, and BOOM you have Broadway Wonka. I'm stilling trying to evaluate which tape of the British/West End musical I should watch, there are only a few. I've heard that the general consensus on the West End version is that it's better than the Broadway version, though I'll have to evaluate that when I watch the British version myself. I plan on making at least 2 videos on the Broadway version.
