The guy that got acid in the face did not attack Lucy. He got the harpoon gun, probably thinking that there was a baby Gulper somewhere. Lucy threw the acid before the man did or said anything to her.

Everyone involved acted reasonably given what they knew, really. I mean, the big problem is the Vault 4 overseer not actually explaining to people WHY not to go on 12, or what's going on.

You see how well they trick the viewer about Vault 4 between this episode and the last one. Great use of people's suspicion to misdirect. The Vault 4 people never actually do anything wrong, theyre weird and it it just 'implies' they're bad. E.g the guy Lucy throws acid at in the last episode. He went for the harpoon gun because he thought one of the women had come out of stasis and birthed a hunch of Gulpers, not because he thought there was an intruder.

I love the beginning scene of this episode not just because it's great in itself, but because it is a straight-up remake of a fantastic scene from the fantastic "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." That movie is a huge inspiration for all the western-y stuff in this show, specifically including the character introductions by way of title card in the first episode: "Lucy" -- "Maximus" -- "The Ghoul." In the movie, of course, the title cards are "The Good" -- "The Bad" -- "The Ugly," and the parallelism is again clear. Also, random game lore: The dad in the beginning, played by Erik Estrada, wears an outfit that makes me think that he is a retired NCR Ranger, which would make him quite the badass. So if he is terrified of The Ghoul, that means a lot.

Roofus was one of Moldaver's people in Filly, going their "incognito" to protect Wilzig (who is extra high profile target) delivery, after paid Ma June indirectly via his brother Tommy. Moldaver has important stuff to protect thus keeps her location secret, while some agancies have bounty on her head, thus all these ways around and middlemen...

Late to the party as usual... I like the term "plot armor" to describe how main characters and important secondary characters always seem to just barely get out of trouble. (Part of the initial allure of Game of Thrones was that it removed all plot armor and anyone could suffer, even die. )
@NerdishReact
@NerdishReact Ай бұрын
At the same time, if the story was about a character that died before accomplishing anything, then no one would be interested. If a show does it, it has to have a bunch of characters to move on with the story and that's is to much budget, like GoT.

I’m really enjoying your reaction and your discussion of the moral themes of the show. The show has clearly set out three moral states that it plays with. The main protagonist, Lucy, is the idealist who is testing her moral idealism against the harsh reality of an unforgiving world. The Ghoul represents a rather nuanced bad guy, the anti-hero, utterly ruthless. He has no qualms about murdering people or using them as bait or trading them to organ harvesters. (I think it’s the actor’s charisma that makes the Ghoul so intriguing, and it’s his backstory that piques our curiosity about how he fell from a good person into wickedness. We want to like him and we keep hoping there will be a redemptive arc.) That leaves Maximus. What does Maximus represent? Maximus represents us. He is the moral infant making moral choices, sometimes bad ones, but learning to be a good person. He’s maturing as a moral agent. He’s not that smart. He gets beat up, but gets up again. He sometimes makes poor choices, including moral choices, but he muddles through, carried along by events. He is us.
@NerdishReact
@NerdishReact 2 ай бұрын
That's a good analysis! We love reading all the theories and insights viewers think of. To add to what you said, we think Maximus is like a neutral point between Lucy and The Ghoul, and each one of us identify more with one or the other depending on our own beliefs 😁
@MarcosElMalo2
@MarcosElMalo2 2 ай бұрын
@@NerdishReact He is sort of between them, neutral as you say. But he’s also sort of behind them. I’m taking in terms of moral development, he is like a child. The moral lessons he had absorbed are all about punishment and punishment avoidance. A brief digression. Do they have strict Catholic schools run by nuns where you live? That’s what the classroom scene reminded me of. When the teacher smacked Maximus in the face for getting the answer wrong. 😂 I had friends that went to Catholic primaria and secundaria and there were still nuns that used physical punishment. This gave me some insights into the Brotherhood of Steel. They’re Catholics. To get back on track, Maximus is raised in the Catholic tradition, which has stunted his moral development. He still values honor and bravery (or holds them as ideals), but it is only now that he is in the world outside his military camp that he is learning and developing moral values. Lucy has learned moral reasoning, the philosophical logic behind ethical decisions. Vault 33 supposedly operates on a philosophical moral framework. I say supposedly because we learn there is a hidden agenda at work. We learn that the person Lucy sees as the embodiment of vault morality has been operating with contrary values: might makes right and the ends justifies the means. Lucy’s moral story is that of having a developed philosophical moral framework and having it challenged by reality outside her vault. The Ghoul is one whose moral values were challenged and the morals lost. He is more than compromised. He is lost. He’s become the anti-hero of his last movie. The series certainly wants us to ask the question, will he find himself again? Will he find redemption? I’ve already written way too much, but I want to mention one more thing, from a different post apocalyptic work of fiction. Do you remember the postscript of Mad Max: Fury Road? Go look at it again. It was about searching for our better selves in the wasteland.

What happened to Thaddeus? I don't actually know. It's easy to jump to the conclusion that he is becoming a ghoul, given that we've seen ghouls and how resilient they are, and that Maximus calls him a ghoul, but then, Maximus wouldn't know, either. He's just assuming. There is a drug in at least one of the Fallout games, Hydra, that can heal crippled limbs over a short time, and using that might look exactly like what happened here, but I don't really think that's it, either. It's too simple, in a way, given how much emphasis the show puts on it. And Hydra wouldn't make the user radiation-resistant, which is another effect the "doctor" implied. I think it's something else, and if it is, boy howdy. Major plot development implications for the second season. I can't wait.
@NerdishReact

Axotl. They’re not actually radiation resistant, but they have the remarkable ability to regenerate limbs. AFAIK, they’re the only vertebrates that can do this. Some invertebrates line starfish and crustaceans can do this. But anyway, in our world, axotl really do regrow their limbs. Maybe they’re also resistant to radiation in the Fallout World. Vault 4 was developing a human/axotl hybrid, but I suspect that there was also medical research to find a cure for radiation poisoning. So if someone like Cooper received a lethal dose of radiation, they could be treated with axotl-based medicine. It’s probably something that rewires your genetics. It heals your wounds and regenerates limbs. When the ghoul sewed on Lucy’s finger, it just quickened the regeneration . Regrowing an entire finger might take a while and the ghoul needed his trigger finger back right away.

I’m not sure if you realized since you asked “do we know this guy?”, but the man who gave the foot medicine to Thadeus that is turning him into a ghoul was the chicken f-er that Maximus rescued without knowing why he was being attacked. Later you saw him again saying he had a cure for the Target’s missing foot as they walked by him; he was seemingly a “snake oil salesman”, so definitely not trustworthy for many reasons. Also, since you mentioned “maybe Maximus will die and just come back like in a video game”… in the Fallout games, if you die, you lose the game and have to load back to the last time you saved, effectively continuing the story from an earlier point. You can’t just “respawn” or be resurrected. Loving your reactions, looking forward to the last episode and your reaction to The Last of Us, though it is completely different tonally from this show, and you will cry. One last thing… someone else mentioned The Witcher as a video game adaptation, but that’s not really true. The Witcher Netflix series is an adaptation of a series of novels which were also made into a video game adaptation (prior to the show). While they may have taken some inspiration from the games, it’s not fundamentally based on a game as this show, The Last of Us, and Arcane are.

This is by far the best video game adaptation so far, mostly because they went hard into the game's lore without trying to change a bunch of stuff or make it seem more realistic. Last of Us is the second best, because they changed a few things they shouldn't have. The first season of The Witcher is the third best. After that, all the other show adaptations have been horrible. Halo is utter trash. The first two Tomb Raider movies with Angelina Jolie were really good adaptations, but those were movies rather than shows. Hopefully, the success of Fallout and Last of Us has made Hollywood finally realize that to make a successful adaptation they have to strive to be as faithful as possible to the games that so many people fell in love with in the first place.
