If I were you, I would start to keep an eye out from now until the summer this year for a nice preowned copy of the x100v. Best of luck! Another honest and thorough review that touched on some things others haven't. What you didn't cover and what I am curious about is the high ISO performance of the new sensor. Theoretically, the smaller pixel pitch should create more noise, however, I don't know whether other sensor tech mitigates this. As an aside regarding price, you could get an ILC Nikon Z5 with the Nikkor Z 40mm f2 pancake for about $1,300 on sale (keeping in mind the various tradeoffs, of course.)
@USGrant21st6 ай бұрын
Z5 with 40/2 is a totally different beast. But Zfc, or Z50, or Z30 with 24/1.7 is. It's a bit bigger, weight is pretty much the same, but it feels better in hand. Going with Nikon you would save money, and in my view image quality is also better.
@yanniobkirk57446 ай бұрын
Image sensor size largely determines overall image noise. 26mp vs 40mp is irrelevant here. Size the images the same and the noise will be about the same. Higher mp images will fare better with AI noise reduction algorithms. The 40mp sensor has better color reproduction due to more pixels going through the demosaicing process. It's really hard to find the downside of Fuji's 40mp sensor. The lenses may not be good enough to resolve all 40mp but you are never worse off than if they used the old 26mp sensor.

Great review! The improved AF and IBIS is a nice addition. Admittedly, like any lens out there it could be in that one case that it’s a mfg flaw but I’ve seen other comments that some returned or sold there V over a lack of clarity. There is still a lot of appeal in the X100 but to your point, a massive jump in pixels should be accompanied by an equal jump in lens clarity. My Ricoh absolutely blew me away with the sharpness and that’s the standard I hold the Fuji to. Regardless, I appreciate the honesty in your reviews. Some are clearly towing the manufacturers line to maintain self interest.

5:37 "Increasing resolution of the sensor doesn't always lead to more fine detail" Yes and no. As a matter of the fundamental physics of light, "image sharpness" is always the combined average of both the sensor and the lens, therefore, more resolution does in fact always lead to higher image sharpness. However, even if it is "theoretically" possible to double the LP/mm resolved in a final image by increasing sensor resolution, you can't fix the "character" of a lens by changing the sensor. Contrast, distortion, chromatic aberration, a low quality lens will always look low quality even if you use a "Gigapixel" resolution sensor.

If resolution wasn't important we would be stuck with 8MP sensors to this day! Cropping power without losing quality is essential, even for personal and social media photography. It's really strange that so many people are against this just because of the stupid MegaPixel race of the past. As long as performance is great, more megapixels is ALWAYS better. It would be nice if all cameras came with pixel binning technology so that files could be smaller and processing faster for those who need it, or to reduce noise in low light situations like some smartphones do and like Leica does on the M11 if I'm not mistaken.

Not fully sure I tested it with my students who choose the picture of exact same subjects, the picture of the first X100 as somewhat more pleasant and satisfying to the eye. The XS20 looks good. It is easy to use and to carry. It produces first rate images and I am delighted with it. So, why would I buy the X100vi with its fixed 35mm lens and non flip out screen - no flash - sub par video and limited battery? Answer - I won’t. I get the aesthetics. It looks great and maybe that’s it appeal. Gen Z like it’s ‘retro’ styling. If that encourages them to pick up a camera instead of a smart phone - terrific. But honestly, there are better performing cameras for the same price out there and I am very happy with mine.

Beautiful Camera. I'd have to feel them in hand, but adding IBIS does seem like the most practical upgrade over the V. IMHO mid 20s Megapixels is the highest APS-c sensors ought to go without radical changes in sensor technology.

I still use a X100S and I still love it (which I bought used when the X100T came out). Sometimes I'd like to have a higher resolution and really would like the tilting screen. For my needs the resolution of the X100VI is kind of overkill. I also like the idea of having IBIS, but the IBIS not locking in when the camera is shut off sound kind of nerv wrecking to me. I might jump on a used X100V if I find it used for a good price. But I guess the price of the X100V on the used market will not drop dramatically for quite a while.

Same battery, screen, lens, and viewfinder seems wild to me at this price.

Factoring in inflation, it’s cheaper than the V. Unreasonable to expect EVERYTHING to be upgraded imo

I saw other V and VI resolution comparisons pertaining to the lens and each showed improved detail sharpness in the VI, so I am lead to believe that the 23mm II lens was anticipating a jump in sensor resolution when they designed this lens for the V release. Not sure what you did but your results contradict what I saw in two other videos last night. As far as the $200 increase, just think what you're getting for that $200., 5.5 to 6-stop IBIS, 4-stop built in ND, 40MP X-Trans sensor

See the size jump from the original Fuji 23mm 1.4 R lens to the new WR version in order to increase the resolving power, I'm not sure Fuji will be able to design a lens, keeping the X100 form factor and fully utilize the 40MP APSC sensor. This level of pixel density is really overkill for the X100 crowd.

The x100 lens is insanely sharp, almost too clinically so - I see no problem with 40mp
@weizhang69796 ай бұрын
Preordered. Silver! It should be a nice compliment to my Leica Q2 mono. For shooting people, maybe the “softer” lens on the 40mp sensor will look more organic? The Nikon mirrorless lenses are too sharp for my kind of shooting of people, in my opinion.

@@mattgranger Thank you! :) We shall see. Maybe I will not like it as much once I get it. I think the sharpness of the lens on the high res sensor may be the least I need to worry about. Considering the x100v is out of production, the x100vi is the closest x100 we can get until the next model comes out.

One of my fav lens is a Zeiss 50mm f1.5 lens for shooting beauty, on my mirrorless cameras (like the Nikon Zf, Leica M10-R, etc). It’s not the highest res lens, but it has better 3d pop, thus I was saying what I said. For shooting landscape or architectures or anything else, it would expect the image sharpness and high resolving details.

Hm, I do not fully get what you mean with your concerns “is the lens good enough for the 40MP sensor?” You had the camera a couple of days, so it would have been easy for you to test the “lensor” combination and ANSWER your own question and present the result to the audience 🤔

Great review , VI seems like a bit of a stop gap fuji until they get a better up to date faster lens on it and now it has become too expensive. The fixed lens is no different from previous older models , it really needed a bump in light gathering be brighter or at least F1.8 . Great observations you pointed out the optical resolving power is not consistent with the higher megapixel sensor is a big fail . Your better off getting the ZFC or ZF much better way to go if you want retro style much better usable flip screen as well and have then many options for superior fixed wide focal lengths @ F1.2 , 1.4, 1.8 with older legacy F glass via ftz or just use new Z mount .

I think $1,599 USD is a fair price, considering the substantial upgrades, particularly the new IBIS system. I also think the fact Fujifilm built a new factory in China bodes well for meeting demand this time around. Sure, there could have been other changes, such a fattening the grip to make room for a larger battery, but it seems wiser to retain the winning design aesthetic. Regarding the lens, I suspect the update for the Mark V was forward-looking, just as Fujifilm has updated many of its XF lenses to keep up with increases in sensor resolution.
@mattgranger6 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. There are plenty of x lenses that do not resolve 40mp, (also true of every brand). I’m sure it was planned to cover 2 generations, I’m not sure it’s up to the task. 🤷♂️ in any case, Fuji always update sensor, then a generation the lens gets an update. To me if the lens can support the resolution as ‘planned’, they wouldn’t update the lens as the key selling point in the next generation.

How does the IBIS work with video? That is the big question for me. I learned quickly NOT to use the video on my X100V because the smallest twitch would ruin the shot. As a result, I would just use my iPhone for video and get a much more stable shot. So does IBIS improve the quality of video?

Great video Matt! Went with the XH2S some time ago after having tested the XH2 and noticed the file size. All as expected but I came from a GFX / X2D and liked to have a more simple complementary setup. Not sure if the 40MP are needed? x_X Looks like a fine "walkabout" camera for sure. Now I would be torn between this and the Q3. Yet another (recurring) competition.

You should really advise Olympus I mean om syatems on how to rejuvenate MFTs. It's a shame as the new company doesn't seem that interested or even capable of much R&D that comes anywhere near the kind of advances and forward thinking of Olympus. Incremental updates buffer size, RAM or even sensor aren't going to cut it so if this keeps up and there's no actual innovation then the whole system is going to wither and die. My first camera was the 10-year-old OM-D E1 and it was so ahead of its time it's remarkable. I love how that camera feels and performs and I'm still astounded at all the features that were included in a camera released more than a decade ago. Especially for barely $300!
