You will get vastly different answers from highly intelligent people on both sides. They deflect by not saying yes or no. Also, when they are asked to come to these things, they generally know what the topic is and therefore can prepare. This is not an isolated event. This happens every time the answer to the question may hurt them politically. The issue with Israel should not be that hard to answer for an educated person like him. The fact that a yes answer would hurt him with his peers is enough to make you believe he was deflecting on purpose.

Yeah, it's perfectly reasonable to not know the answer to that question. I don't know enough about Israel, its history, its leaders, its formation, who was supplanted and how etc. to answer a questions like that. It's perfectly possible to be against anti-Semitism and persecution of Jews in all forms, yet not know about the validity of the state of Israel. "Don't know" is the answer people give when they're wise enough to realise they don't have all the facts. Everyone running around saying Yes or No to questions like that when they have only the tiniest shred of understanding are much more problematic. If EVERYONE said "I don't know" when they don't know, the conversation-space would be much quieter and clearer for people who actually knew what they were talking about to make their informed points.
