Shawn James visits Dick Proenneke's off grid log cabin at Twin Lakes in Lake Clark National Park, Alaska and spends two nights alone camping on the gravel beach of upper Twin Lake. Bears, moose and Dall sheep abound and he catches and cooks fish on an open fire, including arctic grayling and arctic char, catching and releasing sockeye salmon as well.
Hiking in the mountains of the Alaskan range, he views incredible vistas from the mountain tops and watches as clouds race through the valley, with ever changing weather - rain, sun, wind...
See the inside of Proenneke's log cabin as well as three others, which will be showcased in more detail in the follow up video.

Shawn you walked where Mr. Proenneke walked, fished at the same spot where he fished, ate blueberries from the same patches he ate from, and wrote in your journal where he wrote in his...How exciting it must have been for you to visit a place that he built, lived in for all those years. To be inspired by him all those years ago to set you on your own path of self reliance, building your own cabin. You have come full circle...and now...you are the inspiration to a whole new generation! Henry David Thoreau said, “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”...This is your hour Mr. Shawn James!

Shawn James did amazing work on his cabin but for a different reasons. Nothing wrong with it but different. Proenneke wanted a simple life in natural settings away from everyone. Shawn is doing this to make money. Nothing wrong with it but you can't compare them from intention.

I used to live in Alaska, and met Dick the first time in 1995 when I was a teenager going out there with my dad. I saw him the last time in 1997. I had no idea at the time that Dick was such an important person to so many people. It wasn't until sometime around 2006 or 2007 I think that I saw Alone in the Wilderness on PBS and told my wife oh my god that's Dick I knew him. He would absolutely have loved your work. You two are two peas in a pod. I didn't know him anywhere near as well as Leon and Sig and the rest of the Alsworth family but I am sure glad I met him and got to spend a couple days out there when he was alive.

Don't hope, do. I moved up here a year ago for work. Thought I would only be here 4-6 months. I'm moving my family here in a week. I waited 45 years to make the move of a lifetime. Word of advice- do what your heart tells you. You don't know what life will bring you tomorrow. Live for today

@@nvrdwn3140 true. I guess what I'm saying is follow what your heart desires. If it's buying a ticket to Alaska and driving around a summer, do it. If it's taking a walk through your local forest/desert/city/canyon, do that! Don't spend it all behind a desk. Life doesn't give you those years back.

I also remember watching in awe as he made those and always remembering what he said about how people today do not have the enjoyment of creating things from scratch and seeing it through from beginning to end - creating wholes not only parts. That resonated with me.

Incredible video!! I am 57 years old and almost cried when I saw this. I am so sick and tired of the same old humbug grind of a job that only provides temporary satisfaction until each payday's check runs out. When I was a boy, I hunted and stayed in the woods for a large part of my early life. Now, I feel like I am becoming an old man trapped in the fraudulent scheme of the American dream which is designed to suck the life out of you with taxes, insurance, fees, licenses, permits and Social Security which will never be there by the time I am 65. None of these are tangible property. Then our wonderful government is going to slam the family for more with death taxes. Kudos to you Shawn!! I watch all of your videos and I hope one day to break loose from the scam.

LaDon it is a scam. But at age 57 you have been granted wisdom. I am at the same point you are my friend. I am surrounded by a family who does not get it and even in the middle of a pandemic just don't seem to learn. This consumerism crap we have been taught to crave is not the way to a satifying life. Put down the electronics and build a fire. Catch a fish and cook it over that fire. This is life.

All of this, of course, raises one rather obvious question. He was alone almost all of the time. So, why did he need to wear any clothes whenever it was warm? (By which I mean: any time during which it was over 40-45F or so, and really: even 35-40F too). You can save on a lot of fabric wear & tear and laundry time by simply not using any of it! Shoes for the feet, hat to cover the head when it gets under 45-50F, gloves for 35-40F and you're all set to go. I never had a problem with it (oops. I think I said that one out loud).

As an Atheist. I believe nature creates this pure beauty, birds eat seeds, bears eat fish, berries, reindeer, Moose, eat shrubs berries, poop then seeds sprout, create new growth, trees send out shoots hence new tree's. I am a believer of Angel's our loved one's taken to soon, our Guardian Angel's like my big sister only one month short of her 12th birthday passed in 1974 from Leaukimia in my mum's arms waiting for an ambulance no morphine nothing, she never complained. Then my dad taken by a brain tumour, Aunties, Uncles, Dear Friends, Innocent Children. What "God" does that? All gone Home to a Wonderful place like these video's, full of Beauty and peace, when it's my time to go home I will see my Sister, dad, pets again In a Wonderful Place like in Shawn's video's. Nope Mother Nature created and continues to create this beauty called nature. Kind thoughts to you and your family from Australia xx
