After our amazing experiences in the caves of Phong Nha we head back onto the Ho Chi Minh Road and head south towards the ancient city of Hue and the DMZ.
The DMZ or the demilitarized zone was the separating line drawn during the Vietnam war that separated the North and the South of the country and was home to some of the most violent clashes.
Today we take a tour through this beautiful yet somber part of the country and try to make it to the ancient imperial city of Hue.
This series was filmed in July 2022 ✌️🇻🇳✌️

Paddy, i cannot stand to watch stuffy nosed travel documentaries on ‘normal’ TV anymore. They do absolutely nothing for me, and compare in no way to this raw, off the beaten path, real, honest and spectacular documentaries you are churning out week after week. I cannot wait to just get home and experience another country from your perspective. This is the standard, and you are absolutely nailing it. Thank you 🙏🤌😊

My Dad volunteered to serve in the Air Force in Vietnam. He and my Mom talked about it at length and they knew by the time I was born in 1964 that the war was going to get hot. He wanted to put in his time over there BEFORE things got bad. Fortunately, he was sent to Germany instead, and this is where we lived during the late 60's, safe from harm's way. Vietnam was always a big thing in my family as my uncle served over there and we also lived at Travis Air Force Base where all the returning service members landed at the end of the war. I want to go to Vietnam as a form of closure for my family. p.s. I am an Av-Geek as well. Mentour Pilot and 74 Gear plus the planes landing and ALL the air disaster documentaries!

America didn't lose a single battle, the war was lost in Congress and because the leftist mainstream media was whipping up anti-war protest. The death knell came when Democrats like senators Joe Biden and John Kerry voted to cut off funding for South Vietnam. At the time, Henry Kissinger was using China to fight the Soviet Union but now the situation has changed since China has become bellicose and is aiming for world domination. Vietnam has got its chance now since it's the only country in the region which has the guts to stand up to China.

if you make it to Saigon, go to the war remnants museum, it'll tear your heart out. if you think what Russia has done to Ukraine is terrible, that's nothing compared to what the usa did in Vietnam.

Just make a trip to VN , you will see that the Vietnamese people are not rancorous at all . The past was already left behind and our former enemies ( the Chinese , the French and the Americans ) are today very welcome in our country , except if they ( especially the Chinese ) plan another bad `coup` to us again

The reason why central Vietnam has so many quiet hill side scenic roads is because these roads are very dangerous, they caused so many accidents in the past, that's why 2-3 tunnels have been dug through the ,mountains in the past decade for cars and trucks, they cut back the time and accidents ......if you pay attention there are a lot of small shrines along these hillside roads, as local people set up for the victims of these car accidents .

The Ho Chi Minh road was built only as a backup plan in case of war or the roads from north to south along the coast were damaged by war or natural disaster. Because Vietnam's geography is narrow in the central region, in the history of Vietnam it is easy to be divided into two parts, so this road has very few vehicles, but when there is a war, weapons will be transported by this road.

The transport aircraft is a C-130. In the DMZ it was "infamous" for gunship role, especially at night, when NVA convoys were most active. My uncle, my dad's older brother, was killed by one of these. He was a truck driver for the NVA. Actually his remain still burried in one of the cemetery along HCM highway in Ha Tinh province that i'm quite sure you have passed by on your way. A bit of sad history here for sure. But life go on. Have fun in VN!

Brilliant as always. Love you dancing. It makes me nervous for you when you get low on fuel. Can you carry a little bottle, in your basket, for emergencies? Very informative regarding the war. So sad how many lives were lost. The planes and helicopters were huge. It always amazes me how they get into the sky. Very informative about visas. And always great to hear you have taken time with Miss P. Beautiful video. You are a tonic. Always feel-good vibes. Very uplifting. Thank you. Have a wonderful week.

After Hoi An, I suggest you hit the coast (eventually) at Quy Nhon, then enjoy the coast all the way to Phan Rang Thap Cham. I know the One Pack Wanderers did not like Nha Trang, but on either side of it the coast is beautiful. For a night or 2 or reset/ recharge…it’s good. Craft beer! Beach bars!

Great stuff Paddy. ‘Somber’ is the right word which I didn’t have when I was there. I appreciate you articulating the same thought that I had: how could anyone fight a war in what may be one of the most beautiful countries in the world? It seems like an affront to reason and to God for those who believe in God like myself. And for what? To return to its natural state but only with so many people missing. For the first time I realized that our hippies and counter-culturalists were a lone voice in a forest and on the side of rational thinking over the greed and arrogance that was residual after the U.S. and allied dual wins Europe and in Asia. Thank you for being respectful to these places and for sharing your thoughts and feelings about them while you’re there.

Ok I just checked VIsa Top website in Vietnam released 29 April 2022, You can apply for 3 months visa like before, but it's a one time entry, you have to leave after 3mths and cannot extend after 3mths, and cannot leave and come back during those 3mths even if the time is still valid, (eg. stay for 1-2mths and leave and come back) .......the current 1mth visa allows you to do 1 day (couple hours) border run through Cambodia and Laos many times and come back. ..........Back to the video, In Vietnam you can buy a separate bottle of gasoline for back up if you plan to travel to remote areas. A 1 litre Coke bottle will do ....

I also liked the accompanying music throughout the VLOG too. I hope you enjoy Da Nang and Hoi An just as much as I did when I was there. If you get time take a look (at night) at the Dragon Bridge in Da Nang. It emits flames out of the mouth of the dragon. About every 10 minutes or so. Also I would strongly recommend going to Marble Mountain near Da Nang. Take care of yourself and keep up the excellent work you’re doing.

Hi Paddy, I don't know if you will still be in Hue by the time you read this message but if you are I recommend you go and visit the temple named Từ Hiếu Temple. This is the temple that the Father of Mindfulness was ordained at aged 16. His name is Thich Nhat Hanh. His story, his life, is well worth checking out. There is not a lot to see there but the bell alone is worth the visit. I'm sure it's the bell from "The bell chant". The place has an energy to it.

I'm with you on there be nobody around and it's just you communing with nature. What a peaceful and soul-soothing ride that must have been. I was curious, though, what you would have done had you run out of gas. I think that would have made the video that much more interesting. 😁

The best thing for me in this video is the lack of back packers for the majority of your journey.

Area around Khe Sanh museum looks so different to when I was there 20 years ago. It was all just red earth then, with abandoned artillery and no buildings. Now it looks like the green has finally returned.

I was thinking the same. Visited in 2013 and it was still red earth then. Cool to see the changes.

Watching your videos after going home from a stressful day at work is very mind relaxing and therapeutic. Thank you again Paddy D for those epic landscapes and masterful editings! Also, your positive commentary voice and language used are National Geographic standard and quality. Greetings from Nashville Tennessee USA 🇺🇸. My native hometown Nha Trang is probably in your journey route too, can’t wait! Peace!

One of the most enjoyable things about watching this vlog is seeing how happy you are, Paddy. Stunning scenery! But you were in a concerning situation being low on fuel whilst out in a place where seeing another person or vehicle was rare. But you weren't that bothered! Wow! Glad you made it to Hue. Hopefully you got to watch the Women's Euro Final and watched the Lady Lionneses bring football home to England! ⚽️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Looks a nice trip along the Ho Chi Minh road. Lovely weather and scenery. Hey Paddy, had a chicken kebab from outside Asawin market in Lampang last night. It wasn't quite the same as those three in the morning donor kebabs in England, you mentioned in your Hanoi food episode, but not bad...

Another top class video of your travels, thank you. I would love to go there see it all, but probably won't so going along with you is a real treat. Can you identify the town you stayed in with the museum and aircraft was Khe Sanh?

Paddy, nice video again, most are!! I binge watched this Vietnam trip in the last 3 days. I have watched many of your Thai vids too, I have enjoyed them all. The parts I like the best is when your pulled over by a lady who wants to give you ice water, or crashing a wedding. ( I did the same thing once in Puerto Vallarta) THOSE are moments, in my opinion, that are the ones that matter on a trip like this. And of course the shear beautiful places, the people and way of life is why I buy the ticket. Mostly I want to thank you for being a decent human being, even with rude people that want to make sure you have a license!! You kept a cool head and keep things real. Keep it up. Best of luck to you sir.

what a stunning part of Vietnam...wasn't Hue the setting for the the second half of Full Metal Jacket? Another great video Paddy and interesting museum in the DMZ. I've read so many books about the Vietnam War and am currently reading 'The Street Without Joy'...fascinating country and I'm envious of your travels, but thanks fir sharing the beauty of Vietnam 😁👍👊
