It's funny Julian mentions having never considered being in love with a man when Andrew Robinson described Garak as being "omnisexual" and finding Julian attractive. When Garak spoke of being in love at that moment and Julian mentioned Ziyal I could almost imagine Garak feeling a pang of love for Julian. Sid and Andrew are fantastic actors with amazing chemistry together. Even now they can perfectly sell these characters and drop right back into the banter and friendship and slight mistrust Garak and Julian have for one another.

Close your eyes and listen. You will start to see in your mind the characters in their costumes and proper background. Julian is older, a little grey and has a beard (like Sid has now). Garak is older, grey haired and a bit fuller in the face. You can see the years in their faces and eyes, but underneath you still see Bashir & Garak as they were. This is a piece of excellent work.

Indeed, I can truly see Garak's facial expressions as he speaks, and Bashir as if he was in full Starfleet uniform and sitting in a runabout. The mind's eye is indeed the perfect cinematographer for this perfectly delivered verbal exchange by the actors.

Subtle? What do you mean? Sorry, I have aspergers and ADHD, verified diagnosis on both, so I really do not understand subtlety. Are you referring to Elim Garak being attracted to Julian Bashir? I watched "What we left behind", and I saw that segment. Was that the case? I thought after looking back at those episodes a decade ago and at age 30 something I was thinking that either Garak was being creepy to screw with the mind of a vulnerable person, or that he was from a culture with different cultural norms and values. Could someone please clear this up for me?
@lilliansunshine7499
@lilliansunshine7499 3 жыл бұрын
@@northwestsmith215 Yes for us that's how we interpreted this line! I can't speak for the other people the thread but many people who ship Garashir really don't approve of Ziyal × Garak bc we think he's too young for you. We also find that his scenes with her on the show seem to be lacking in attraction on his side, he seems to like her company without being in love with her as she is with him. To us when he goes "Ziyal...yes" he's letting Julian assume an untrue fact because he prefers that to admitting at one time he loved Julian. Same when he sort of hurries along Julian when he talks about being with Ken, I read it as Garak didn't want to hear about this other man he was still pining for. Does that clear things up?
@lilliansunshine7499
@lilliansunshine7499 3 жыл бұрын
@@northwestsmith215 Slash is something personal, and if you find Garak predatory that's valid, although a lot of us disagree with you. However Andrew Robinson and Siddig el-Fadil have both gone on the record and said they enjoyed playing the relationship with sexual overtones so there's a lot of subtle moments in the canon that Garashir shippers tend to fixate on. You don't need to worry about them if you're not interested

Range? Sadly, he was type-cast for evil psychopaths. And does it well. I'm not sure if that was their goal with Garak, but if it was, they failed. Garak was his best role.
@travisrobert9530
@travisrobert9530 Жыл бұрын
@@Flat_Earth_Addy Yes, range. Research his different roles over his career and you'll see he wasn't always typecast as psychopaths. And, of course, Garak wasn't evil. Misguided? Yes. Confused? Absolutely. He was a product of the system he served. But remember that in the end this character rose above his situation and participated in liberating Cardassia from the Dominion.

@@travisrobert9530 I wouldn't call Garak misguided so much as he is an ultranationalist. His worldview is that he is right and everyone else is wrong, and the Obsidian Order would have amplified that in his training. Don't forget that Inabran Tain is also his father. He may as well have been raised by Steve Bannon. Sadly, Garak's methods have worked (even when immoral) time and time again. Read Andy's A Stitch in Time and you'll learn how he was trained and a bit about why he thinks the way that he does.

@@mcampbellteach I hear what you're saying, but I stand by what I said. He was misguided. These days there are many misguided ultra nationalists. One only has to watch the news. Thank you for your response.

This makes me miss DS9 even more than I already was after seeing the "What We Left Behind" DS9 documentary and hearing of the passing of Nog (Aron Eisenberg) and Odo (René Auberjonois). Andrew Robinson really made the character of Garak something special: A supposed bad guy who you could not turn your eyes away from, nor really ever work out whether he was lying or telling the truth (most likely a clever combination of the two). One of the very best characters in all of Star Trek's long existence on TV and on the big screen.

Man, so many years have passed and these two haven't lost one step! They slide into their roles like a comfy pair of jeans. I adore these two and feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to meet them back in 2000. Never thought I'd be able to hear "My dear doctor." again!

I enjoyed Picard, but I wouldn't have if it weren't Picard (I can't enjoy Discovery). The storytelling these days is simply too focused, to single-track, for me to get a handle on the characters the way I did with the less cinematic, more "TV-like" shows of the past. Picard has the same problem, but Patrick Stewart did a fantastic job reprising the role, and because I already know the character from TNG, I am able to enjoy Picard despite its shortcomings in pacing.

I know its only make believe but as a truck driver i spent many years alone with just these characters to keep me company . I never liked the ending . It would have been much easier to think it will be business as usual for eternity for an ending to the show . Im just a sucker for a happy ending . Thanks for the memories .

I like the ending as a nice way to bookend the show. We started with Sisko meeting the Prophets, and we finished with him joining them with a monologue about him returning to the station at some time. "It mmay be tomorrow. It may be yesterday." Less an ending as a to be continued.

The Garak-Dukat tryst was hilarious, the unsuccessful attempt by Bashir to re-establish a relationship in a male host was poignant.

This is fantastic on so many levels. Thank you. An aside: I particularly like how the two characters are speaking "normally" to each other - occasional interruptions and overtalking, rather than the more formalised pauses between each line. It was a bit jarring at first, but ultimately it made it more "real" and I love it.
