I doctor every cake mix. I mix the cake mix, a 4 serving package of pudding mix, 4 eggs, 1 cup water and half cup oil. If I am making yellow cake its vanilla pudding. Lemon pudding for a lemon cake. Spice cake either vanilla or pumpkin pudding. Chocolate pudding for chocolate. Duh. Unless my super rich chocolate cake. Then cut the water in half and add a cup of sour cream and a cup of chocolate chips.

100% a southern channel without family recipes is like a rainstorm without a rainbow after.

Great Value cake mixes use to taste just like Duncan Hines cakes mixes, but even now I think GV is better than Pillsbury. Duncan Hines is also the winner in frostings.

That is so cool! My dad was a grocery store manager when I was growing up. I used to try to figure out which company made their generic brand products. I never thought about where breading for fast food was made. Chick-fil-A is the best!!

That would have been good to know when I lived in Tuscaloosa. I had the most hilarious (not) discussion with the manager about where to find Matzoh for Passover. in the local grocery store.

@@jbjacobs9514 Manishewitz mixes are usually meant for Passover. I'm sure you know that Passover cakes taste good only during Passover. Although the brownies are delicious. And I'm sure your grandma's scratch cakes were wonderful.

haha you're right! I finally remembered the store I used to go to a lot in Tuscaloosa - it was Bruno's. I wonder if they still exist anymore. This was late 80s. Yes, luckily my grandma's scratch cakes were awesome, as were her blintzes (loved when she allowed me to help), flanken/"potted meat", gefiltefish, and cabbage soup. She used to make my mom baked apple and "health" salad. I also loved that my grandma's secret to her corned beef was "to put her finger into it during the process". How did she not burn her finger? You have to be selective at Aldi. I bought ground breakfast sausage at Aldi. It was terrible. The only flavor was fat, and the skillet was all grease. I will buy crackers, nuts, and cheese from there. But I'm careful about other things.

Aldi is a treasure. Not on everything but on many things. The German branded products are great.

I recently made a chorizo dish sautéed with sour cream, spices, and little spiral pasta. About two bites in, my mind was trying to figure out why this was familiar. I basically made a slightly more healthy Hamburger Helper and I loved every damn bite!

The recent stuff seems to have had all the flavor removed. I have copycat recipes for Cheeseburger Macaroni, Beef Stroganoff, and Rice Oriental that all taste way better than the official versions ever did.

Some poor Southerner is gonna have a full-on conniption reading this being called cornbread... not saying it'd be bad, I'd eat the heck out of it! But you know how some folks are about what can be called cornbread! 😆

Being from Washington State, we must have a much more loose definition of corn bread. When I moved to Wisconsin, corn bread took on a whole new meaning around Oneida.

I have seen this done too and most of my dad's family are Kentucky hillbillies.

Sounds less like cornbread and more like corn cupcakes. 10/10 would eat a plate of them.

You can find recipes for cake mixes, you can jar them up in advance. Good for gift giving, too.

There is a book by Anne Byrn , "The Cake Dooctor" with recipes galore on how to "doctor" up a cake mix.

You can use butter instead of oil, milk instead of water, add vanilla (or other extracts), or malted milk powder. Add cocoa or melted chocolate to chocolate cakes for extra richness. Lots of fun tricks! The King Arthur Baking site also has good baking pointers.

I'm pretty sure that food coloring comes in a paste, not just the drippy bottles. If you don't use much it makes pastel colors ;)

@sistakia33 - I wouldn't mind the box cake mix so much, especially changing out the water and oil for milk and butter. However, I WILL NOT buy those canned frostings. I will make my OWN frosting from butter, powdered sugar and vanilla. I add cocoa for chocolate frosting, or cream cheese for a change from vanilla. The canned frostings really DO NOT compare to homemade.

I buy raw products from Aldi, like milk, meat and produce. Almost anything with ingredients is a disappointment- except their deluxe jam. That's good.

Yep, still in Texas. But don't get one from a dollar general - I swear they've been sitting on the shelf for roughly 90 years there and you can TASTE IT.

My kids loved the cheesy enchilada hamburger helper, they were in their teens and could make for themselves on the days I had to work late.

Amazing yet true: you have more taste buds when you are young than when you are old, so it’s not that you have developed a sophisticated bougie palate, it’s that children are super tasters and things that taste bland to an adult have a much more intense flavor to a child. There’s a reason why we start appreciating sharp, salty, spicy, and strong flavors as we age.

OMG, it's exactly the same where my sister works! They now have to keep Narcan on hand in case someone ODs, as well has having a full time deputy sheriff working there. Sad, really.
