Disclaimer: Love Your RV! received the Alpha Systems product samples free of charge from Lippert for the installation & review.
In part two, I install the new SuperFlex roof membrane from Alpha Systems. I'll also reinstall and seal the trim and flashing with various Alpha Systems sealants. Under the flashing, I use their butyl tape. On the roof seams, I used the self-leveling lap sealant. And on the sidewalls, I used the non-sag sealant for vertical surfaces.

Slide awnings are the way to go in my opinion
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 3 жыл бұрын
Some like them for ease of cleaning, but we spend a lot of time in really windy areas where they become a pain, the ocean coast and the desert and not much under trees or snow and we just have the one slide to deal with. So for me they have more cons then pros. They add extra hardware screwed into the rig to maintain and the awning material wears out as well and needs to be replaced. I think I'd rather just replace the roof membrane every 10-15 years or so since a person still has to do the sidewall seals no matter what. Cheers, Ray.

Thanks for the video, Ray. You make it look so easy, I'm almost tempted to try it myself. The true sign of an expert. I do have just one question. Is there a reason why you don't have a slide topper? Interested to hear your thoughts on that. Thanks again.
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, John. That is an often asked question and here as my thoughts. Toppers have pros and cons, personally, I'd rather not have a topper, I just have one slide. We often camp in very high winds during our normal winters in the desert and travels on the west coast. The flapping would be annoying and worrying about them being ripped off. Plus the added cost and maintenance. I think I'd rather change the membrane every 10 years or so than deal with the slide topper and extra hardware. :) Maybe if I camped under trees a lot or in high heat I'd think about having one for shade. But for me there isn't a compelling reason to bother with one. Slide toppers can also be an issue in the snowy weather if the wind blows the snow under and it then melts and refreezes and creates an ice dam under the topper. I've heard various pro and con opinions on them from people over the years that have them and have personally watched people have to use all sorts of methods to tie them down or have to bring the slides if strong winds kick up. One guy I spoke to in an RV Park in Mojave, CA, told me he lost all 4 of his slide toppers when a 100 mph gust came through. Each to their own but not something that I plan on adding to the rig. Maybe when I'm older and less agile and can no longer clear the roof I'll want one. Cheers, Ray

Nicely done ! Do you ever catch any static from park hosts or managers for doing work on you rig(s) ?? Back a few years when we had our class "A" motorhome I was changing my oil and received a lecture from the park manager. I had it all contained in a drain pan that had a sealed lid. I even had a large piece of cardboard down incase of any drips. None occurred and I was less than 30 minutes from start to fully cleaned up. Took the oil to an auto parts place that recycles as well.

So far I haven't had any issues, but I kind of feel out a place before doing stuff and always discuss what I'm going to be doing with my immediate RV neighbors and only if I get the feeling they will be cool with it. Usually I'll work when they are away. This is our 8th summer at this RV Park so I know it and the people running it pretty well now. Cheers, Ray

Nice Job Ray! Did you ever consider replacing the roof with flat metal roofing? There is a guy in Georgia that does just that and it seems to be more of permeant fix. He also does a commercial roof job on the main roof with welded seams and not Dicor. It looks way more professional and long lasting.

How has the eternabond tape hold up from years ago when you installed it? Would you use it again versus dicor?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 3 жыл бұрын
Held up well, lots of it has been up there for 6 1/2 years now with no maintenance needed other than an inspection once and a while. Can't imagine how Dicor would look by now or the work it would have taken to maintain it. Here are my videos www.loveyourrv.com/?s=eternabond If you do the job properly and pay special attention to surface prep if holds well. I'd do it again but do know it may affect the roof warranty but likely they'd blame poor maintenance of Dicor anyway. I have heard that it may not do as well in extreme hot temps like say Arizona during the summer but we only visit in the winters and summer up north so rarely see temps over 90F Cheers, Ray

3-4 hours, basically did it in an afternoon. Most of the work/time is the surface cleaning prep. Here is the official distributor page www.lippert.com/brands/alpha-systems You can also sometimes find it on Amazon amzn.to/3Q3p7SC $65 for the adhesive and $75 for the coating. I thought that one needed to use a heavy roller to get the material to firmly attach to the substrate?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 3 жыл бұрын
This is what the instructions said: Apply water based adhesive, #8010 or #8011, in a wet film thickness of 8-10 mils with a paint roller or brush to the exposed half of the roof deck. (1 gal. will cover approximately 160-200 sq ft.) 8. Lay the roof membrane over the wet #8010 or #8011 adhesive. 9. Before removing air pockets with a squeegee (gray neoprene head will not streak), the membrane must be lifted and pulled taut from each of the four corners of the roof. The membrane needs to be adjusted both in width (side to side) and length (front to rear) to ensure the roof is as flat as possible before the squeegee process. 10. Remove all air pockets with a squeegee; press firmly working from the center outward toward the edges. All wrinkles must be removed at this point for a quality installation. The roof will tighten and conform as the adhesive cures. alphallc.us/wp-content/uploads/Superflex-Roof-Written-Installation-Instructions-with-1021.pdf Here is a video demo - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m5yCasJi1rHKm58.html

@@LoveYourRV I did a test with the Alpha 8010 adhesive, as I need to replace a 3ft x 8ft section of Superflex TPO. Even in 65 degree weather it dried to tackiness in less than 10min - which kind of alarmed me as I hadn't even grabbed the TPO yet. Alpha implies you want it wet for a bit so you can position the TPO. When I called them about it they said they recommend, and I should have bought - the slower drying 8011 - even though months before they'd confidently recommended the 8010. But with 8010 in tackiness state, does it seem like the TPO still works/adheres ?

@@LoveYourRV Ok thanks ! But . . . was yours already tacky when you laid down the TPO ? Or was it still liquid. That's my question as it would seem, normally, that you'd want it not yet setting up to tacky state. Thanks again !

Ray, I consider you an intrepid DIY'er. Nothing seems beyond your scope. I guess the obvious question is whether you considered simply overlaying a sealant product - there are several - on top of the existing material.
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I actually plan on trying out the Alpha Systems roof coating for the main roof as it's not in that bad of shape, and would be a major job to redo the membrane. I think I'll leave the solar panels in place and just freshen up the rest. It will add a bit of protection and help with cooling. I figured the slide-out was not that big of a job comparatively speaking so went for the membrane replacement. Partly because the company was offering free materials and partly because I know RVers with older RVs would be interested in what it takes to do the job. Also, I was wanting to reseal the flashings.
