Alpha and several rival "robots" were automata, controlled by electric and hydraulic power, driven by simple actuators for the pre "programmed" movements. Most detected sound and light and went through a sequence of relay controlled actions on "command". electro in the US could walk slowly, and had a big library of recorded responses, as did Alpha. Even the Victorians had such complex animated figures, sound was the new addition in the 1930's. There was control, but not an operator as such.

I like how You said "programmed" in quotes, beacause they were programmed, programation existed before computers, and it has nearly 100 years. And they were not really automatas, since they could do multiple diffrent things at the dame time. Like elektro, orblike alpha. But again I'm comparing it to 1700's automatas, and the first "robot" in heavy airquotes, so yeah.

The figure responded to any sound or light, and set of a choreographed sequence of actions, which could be quite complex. Alpha achieved notoriety when the gun went off on loading and the blank injured the inventors arm, the newspapers made out that Alpha had shot him! Another Robot was shown at the Olympia Radio show in 1934, which answered questions, but the answers were designed to be ambiguous and only seemed to be an answer!! It responded to any sound, not speech.

It's pretty obvious that this whole thing is just pre-programed mechanical movement and all the dialogue is prescripted, nothing impressive here except this was the 30's so it makes sense how crude it all was. Interestingly, the robot is supposed to be a male yet has curly hair, and what appear to be breasts welded on to it's chest. My guess is the inventor was pretty perverted as well as being somewhat good with mechanical engineering.

It's neither. It's actually an animatronic automata, meaning it is deaigned to do a few things, for example, the voice commands and the talking were because of s recorder, microphone, and a record player. When the microphone hear a comand, it sent a signal to a sensor which would analyze the signal. If it was something to respond to, it played one of the recorded discs. If it was a command however, it would move a rotor or it's head, or fingers.
