My hot take on the new Alpina Seastrong GYRE divewatch.
Overall its a nice watch, a new look for a design thats been around. Most interesting is the new plastic case made from recycled 'ghost nets' - discarded fishing gear polluting the seas.
Most of my video is spent looking at the issue of this recycling effort and trying to figure out if its a worthwhile activity or some empty gesture politics.
I often forget wristchecks so if you want to see what I'm wearing, my collection and other random bits of my life check out my instagram:

Pete we started working with three different Gyre projects, one watch design was done on a piece of paper in Paris in late 2017. This project is now going into production, and the product is being used in the band as well as the watch, if your interested in learning more I can send you more information. GYRE will feature in many other products & investments we are involved with in Europe as it will in the development of products by other companies so it is no gimmick.

GYRE has been a real cause for the oceans for sometime now & many companies have been looking for ways to built products so it is a real thing, not a gimmick as you are aware Pete. I think as a society we are becoming more mindful about many things & not just using these terms as marketing buzz terms as many companies in past would do, we all can play a part big & small.

Was looking into this watch and stumbled across your video, this was an awesome video and super Informative! This watch seems to have flown a bit under the radar but has been rated very positively! I'm all about the eco friendly goal, and I love the design so this watch may be a future purchase! Christopher Ward is also doing something similar with their C60 tide watch

Good show I didn’t realise how encompassing watch loving or collecting was till now ,where we are discussing ghost nets in the oceans ,recycling plastics and value chains. For me so much research and thought must now go into buying a watch no more impulse buying. Thanks for sharing the informative content.🇮🇪

This hobby doesnt HAVE to consider any of that. Personally I think its infinitely more interesting if we do however. So glad you enjoyed it.

Environmental initiatives like this can only be a good thing in my opinion. Perhaps I don't look into things as deeply as you, Pete (and I do appreciate the depth and complexity of how you see things - that is why I watch your channel; it is one of your USPs). My simple take is if people buy this watch as they see value in it and in supporting the environmental initiative, and this in turn leads to more of the same from Alpina and/or other manufacturers, that can only be a good thing for both those watch purchasers and the environment through recycling the ghost nets and creating more awareness. It's not going to change the world, but hopefully it is part of something bigger that will lead to some small changes.

Yeah, I didnt go into that but I agree with the sentiment. I do believe (though Im a long way short of being certain) this is a good thing with real world impacts, BUT even if it tuns out to be a gesture, is that really so terrible?

What if Swatch started doing this? Or Cassio... it’s like my plug in hybrid won’t make a huge difference, but if we all drove them...

True. Its kind of got to start somewhere, and while you might not be saving the world you certainly dont appear to be making it worse.

Very interesting. You can’t argue that’s is a good thing to get waste plastic out of the ocean. The other side is you have to somehow justify the cost and effort. The large ships I imagine they would have to use consume large amounts of fuel.

Actually it appears they use mostly small ships that were going to be there anyway. The money they pay is supposed to go to local fisherman (proably why they do the indian ocean nets) to supplement their normal fishing runs.

1. It amazes me so many watch fans diss companies like Oris and Alpina who make at least some cursory attempt to be socially conscious. I wouldn’t buy a watch just because it uses recycled glass, but it would be a tie breaker. Certainly not a bad thing. 2. People pay a “status tax” on countless luxury brands. That value-added price uptick is less steep than an environmental friendly $500 up charge. Put it this way - Recycled plastic on a package will cost you less than “in-house.” 3. Like the watch quite a bit - the color ways are quite nice - even the straps and I tend to like the shape of Alpina cases-here it’s no exception. Price seems fair although I’m not into watches with a date at 3 or dots for indices.

I could say there's an element of politics in this, being socially conscious is, too many, an inherently bad thing. Being socially unconcious means never having to question your own behaviour.
