If you ever do the "ear" test comparing these two amps, you need an assistant so you can do it blind (unbaised). I feel that you will naturally want to validate your results. A blind test you may find that you might not be able to differentiate these amps apart. The DSP's with built in amps you may hear the difference

I agree with him that 2nd harmonic distortion is much preferrable to 3rd order, however the distortion is extremely low here, so it really doesn't matter.

Some amps are night and day. I was playing around with one of my MRV-1505's in my lounge for fun a few weeks back, listened to it quickly on some junk speakers just to test it. Then I disconnected it all and connected up a MRV-T757 to test. Immediately, the difference was huge. The T757 has far, far more bass as well as very top end, it was like an EQ V curve while the 1505 sounded flat. I for sure preferred the sound of the T757, more testing needed. Another example, I have a Marantz SR6004 and bought a Denon AVR3808 because it has stupid high output power, but hooked up the Denon and immediately it sounds like crap to me, like terrible, sounds exactly like 90% of power amps, very unrefined, peaky in the 1K region or something. Both amps that disappoint I actually wanted to be the superior one

Musically the 2nd harmonic is an octave above the fundamental and is almost inaudible, yet it adds body to the sound, making it fuller. The 3rd harmonic is a musical 12th. Instead of making the tone fuller, a strong 3rd harmonic makes the tone softer.” “Low order even harmonics are more directly musically related. Higher order harmonics have a much more complex relationship with the original signal. So if you have to have distortion, its better to have, in order of prominence, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th order. Balanced or push-pull circuits / outputs whether tube or solid state will eliminate the even order components and leave the odd order components. That's not an ideal situation, again if you have to have distortion.” A few related quotes. tube amps often are single ended and have higher odd harmonics. In addition to the larger amount of nonlinear distortion caused by the transformer and non ideal output characteristics of a tube vs a transistor. Some people prefers even order which is more easily distinguished and some prefer odd which is more pleasant. The new purify drivers have higher 3rd than second as well but both are low.

i'd guess the more recent amp works in higher frequency judging from the extended hf output. in theory, this will reduce hf distortion. if you want to try, you can measure THD at 20kHz which is way more brutal to the amp. making low THD at 1kHz is much easier than trying to push down THD at 20kHz in my experience
