Alpine's Optim technology, built into their Optim6 signal processor and Optim8 amp, lets you tune your system automatically - just use the mic on your phone with Alpine's tuning app, and within minutes your system is tuned perfectly for your vehicle.
Alpine puts its Optim technology into two different products at present. One is the Alpine PXE-C60-60, which is a 6-channel standalone DSP you'd connect between your head unit and external amplifiers. The other is the PXE-C80-88, which gives you the Optim tuning capability with and 8-channel amp built in.

Can this be used to cancel the engine sounds in a vehicle to hear the music more clear? Or do you just need to volume up?

The Alpine Optim DSP tuning feature is not a noise-cancellation system. That being said, it will dial-in the absolute best sound in your vehicle with the custom-tailored EQ! If you have a noisy cabin, you can also install sound proofing material (as much as you'd like) to quiet the interior from engine and road noise for the best possible sound in the cabin.

Does this work as an actual amp also? Or is it just equalizing/tuning? Do I buy an amp and run it with this piece of gear is my question?

Alpine does offer this tech via an amp and a standalone DSP currently. The best match will come down to your exact setup. How many speakers do you have and how are they configured. Do you have the models or specs handy? Also, do you use an iPhone?

Comparable as far as options and using the mic. Most folks do find the Alpine setup easier to use.

Can this work with a full Alpine status system including the HDP-D90?

Hi Clinton. do you have the Alpine HDP-D90 already? It does use different software. You can connect it to a PC via the included USB-A to USB-B cable. @@crutchfieldI haven't purchased the Alpine Status system yet, but I'm planning to get the HDP-D90, HDS-990, and HDA-M80 along with the Alpine Status speakers and sub. I was wondering if getting the Optim6 would make sense since it would make tuning the system easier.
