Pete, THANK YOU for showing us the photos you're NOT super happy with as well as the bangers. I feel like seeing those is just as inspiring as seeing the great ones, since it gives a more honest view and shows that even amazing photographers capture sub-par shots on occasion. I mean, I still loved all the shots you showed, but some were obviously (subjectively) better. Also, film is alive and well! :) Cheers /Freddy

I’m 52. I remember my dad and his Minolta (which I now have) sitting and waiting for everything to be “just right” for a photo. There was no editing, and he had to get everything from light, to exposure just perfect. I love the old vintage (does that make me vintage) feel of film photos even when they’re not perfect. This all makes me so nostalgic.

I just finished my first year of studying photojournalism and in doing film I think the thing that helped most was pushing myself to shoot my roll, it helped find compositions and scenes and unique elements! Cheers on the continued film journey, you’re the reason I started photography in the first place back with playing card photography!!!

Being of that generation that had no choice but to only shoot film, I was glad to see the back of it. I revisited it once for nostalgic reasons, but was quickly reminded of why I abandoned it asap. Way too expensive, time consuming and not knowing if anything is wrong during a roll. A fun video as always, Pete. Cheers.

I am totally with you on this, started with film and dark room. It’s just a paint in the arse, nice for an art project, but too costly and time consuming for a commercially project.

@@FMJP it’s not that it’s easier, but that people just see it as a different way as opposed to the instant gratification you get from digital. It’s exciting. I say that as a 33 year old. I was around before digital. Imagine how it is for someone who’s life has only been dominated by digital.

I get all these points and I’m not aware of any photographer who got started before digital cameras became a viable option and has gone BACK to film. But I shoot both film and digital and I enjoy both so much. ...shooting on a 80’s SLR is the most enjoyable to me, with all the limitations that come with that. It feels so much more "pure" to me (and don’t get me wrong: I love shooting on my modern full frame mirrorless with all its amazing and extremely useful features!).

I started with film in the 80s, joined the Digital Bandwagon in the mid 2000s, but only own 2 digital cameras currently. Never pulled the trigger on another digicam since. If I need a digital image now, I use my iPhony and done. I have purchased 3 more film cameras in the last 4 years though, 2 medium format Mamiyas and a Leica M7 and I am having a blast!!!.

I love what you said about not wanting to conform to 4x5 and have people view the pictures the way you want them to. I know I lose engagement when I do that, but I often can't help myself, because I don't take pictures for social media engagement, I take them because I love it.

I exclusively overexpose 1 stop and that has largely produced better results across the board. With regards to finishing rolls, it took me awhile to find the balance between film being a "slower" process over digital and actually finishing rolls for a particular project (especially when I'm doing street photography or shorter trips). The way I found the balance is to take a lot more photos of interesting subjects. So, where I would have normally just shot a subject twice, I now try to shoot it 4-5 times with different framing, exposures, etc. That seems to have helped me find that balance. Also, I shoot more medium format now. I get 10 exposures per roll of 120 (Pentax 6x7) and I've never not finished a roll lol.

quick learning task for y’all, to take more time while or before shooting. so get yourself a small capacity sd card, so like one where you can only safe up to 16-60pics (maybe even a slower one, so you need to take your time between the shots) really get‘s you in the mindset to think more, before you take a shot👏🏼 and as always, love your work pete🫶🏼

I used to shoot medium format back in the day, and haven't touched film in years. I remember always going by the rule that if I had just 1 really good shot on a roll, that was a huge win 😅. Thanks for re-awakening the desire to rediscover film again 🙌.

Having started shooting film 102 years ago, and now obviously doing digital, I find this all a bit odd. If you were printing the photos completely analogue it might make some sense, but digitising the neg and then putting through Lightroom? Seriously, what’s the point? You’re just making your life more expensive and more difficult.

Then why do people still paint? Art has no more meaning than you want it to have. Now we have AI generated photo contests. Why even have a camera and shoot digital? Stay home and make AI art, that is even cheaper 😉 Some of us just enjoy the hybrid prosess. We know it is stupid, but if we look around; so are most other things we humans do in our spare time 😅

Way back I used F2’s and F3 HP’s when they were new. I bought a Leica M3. That was my favourite camera of all time. Later I had an M4P briefly. Take a look at an M3. Using it taught me lots. I used to get 2 to 4 keepers from a roll. It was humbling. Your videos are inspiring. Your work is magnificent. My middle name is MacKinnon. Just sharing

Think of some of the best and most iconic photos of all time. Each of these photos tells a story, and that’s what photography lost with digital. It has become more about shoot and pray and less about waiting for the right shot or bringing out the story. Kudos to Pete for showing off his early work. Personally I like the barbershop photo as that tells the best story out of the lot.

You're funny Pete. I learned with film--no other options back then--and praised digital when it came out because it seemed 'easier'. There are aspects of film I do miss but so many more options when editing digital than with film. Less of a chance of missing that one shot...

Dude, that's really, really cool content. I know the feeling of not being able to finish a roll, it sucks. I forced myself to finish a roll once, it sucked even more. But the wait for the roll to be developed, and the discovery of photos you'd forgotten having taken, the expectation and thrill when finally seeing the few photos you KNEW were good... Makes it all worth it. 🤙🏻

Hahah..that's the theme for film photography, just cause you got the film colors and tasty film grain, there's SO much more that goes into cooking up a great photo. Not all of the rolls are going to be great, but the experience and challenge of shooting film is damn near as rewarding as a good photo. Emerson said something like, "it's not the destination, it's the journey" and I think it applies well for shooting film. Enjoy yourself.

Try the built in light meter in the m6, imagine the center box in the rangefinder as the metering area and point it at anything close to neutral gray or whatever is between lightest and darkest part of the scene. I also set my iso dial at 1 stop over for ex 200 if 400 or 100 if 200 etc, it makes a difference. Hope this helps ☺️🤘🏽

I fell the “romantic aspect” of shooting film fades away with all the “technicians” make digital files, adding presents and tweaking the photos before the “artist” had a chance of seen it.

Your love of everything photography related shows so well in your videos. You have inspired countless people around the world, from all ages, genders and levels of ability with a camera to never stop creating. I’m one of them. Thank you never seems enough words to show my appreciation for what you do. My journey started at the beginning of Covid in 2020 and also dealing with the bereavement of my partner passing away. On the days I just couldn’t leave my home, I watched your videos and tutorials which I found great entertainment and also a much needed bout of humour. At the time, I didn’t have a lot to laugh about in my life, but your way of connecting to just trying simple photography projects, helped to keep me focused (no pun intended) and to keep moving forward, to creating happier memories from my images. I started film photography over 40 years ago. I remembered the sale person told me that it was too complicate to use a SLR camera and should go for a point and shoot type camera. I was determine to self taught myself, so I bought a book "Encyclopedia in Photography" , and for every chapters it was a roll of film with my little pad and pencil making my setting note and comments on every frames. Afterward, I would compare my photos with more experience photographers for good criticism which I had some amazing shots, some good, some alright, and then some bad shots. I shoot a combination of digital and film. I use Black and white film to train myself on producing better, more authentic black and white images. Using classic Black and white film such as Tri-X, T-Max and HP5. I have also returned to the darkroom and I love the sight of a print developing in the tray. I love the process.

I like that, sometimes you got to suck to become better. This is the truth in everything we do in life. That said, the truck pick was my favorite. I think it was the sun coming thru the window that did it.

Haven't seen your video's for years! Nothing changed. Same stories, different camera only less views. Nothing is endless. People move on. But you're still doing good.

Hang in there Peter, it gets better with practice! It is a different process than digital photography and you have to learn reading and metering the scene differently. Eventually, you ll get more amazing shots out of a single roll but it is also ok for not every pics to be perfect or a “banger shot”

You should honestly make this a series or regular video. From an amateur/hobbyist point of view it was really interesting seeing a pro photographer looking through their photos for the first time in real time. Especially as you're learning film which kinda brings your 'level' down a bit so it was refreshing to see you didn't like some of what you shot. It mirrors more what I and many other photographers experiences are like which makes it refreshing and relatable to watch. Certainly different than seeing a video where a photographer nails every shot and is portfolio worthy which is usually the case on YT. Looking forward to watching more of your journey on film

As someone just starting I feel like im in the same boat but we are on two entirely different planets. I feel like it would be discouraging to see it that way but it’s honestly exciting. Like what is my bucket shot when is going to happen? Will i be able to form the skills to ever take it. Peter you are such an inspiration, thank you.

Was in the same boat as you, dug out my film cameras not long ago and I got so excited about shooting again. I love the mechanical aspect, the analog feel and sounds. Film forces you to slow down, really think about your shots before you make them and put all of your intention into every frame. I had a similar feeling when I got my shots back, some I loved, some not so much, feeling out how the camera likes to expose etc. It's been a lovely experience and I can't wait to shoot more film. I look forward to seeing more of your analog work

Most of my life has been digital yet these photos feel nostalgic to me, I think seeing shots taken from my parents as a kid. These feel more historic and almost more important to me than a thousand digital shots. It has the inaccessibility I felt then, as though these are unique unrepeatable moments locked in forever.

Honestly I love your mindset with film after experiencing the difficulties of it. Not ever shot is perfect, yet sometimes that is what makes the shot perfect. Theres a beauty in the imperfections and like all photography, the more you shoot with film the closer you will get to having those perfect rolls of film. Keep at it Pete, we all love to see it!

Been shooting and developing film since the 90s. I love film. Always have and always will. Not for everyone. I didn't even get a digital camera until 2018ish.

Why would you use Pro-Mist on a film camera when film already has a soft look? We typically use Pro-Mist on digital to achieve a film-like appearance.

I have been shooting film for years now and I always try to work the scene for a better "good photo" yield. I try taking at least 2 or 3 photos of the scene if I believe in it and I try not to chase the "perfect roll". Anyway, love to see you enjoy the process Pete !

Im 38 and the only downside about shooting film is the process of getting them developed. I remember when I use to work at Eckerds when I was 17 and used to develop my own film at work and get them back in an hour. Now I would have to send it in to a lab and wait about a week. I would develop it myself but I'm too lazy

I think you need to be more liberal with your shutter button. 😊 I try and make a goal to shoot off a few rolls each trip. I try and always make sure if I load a roll then I have to finish it! Great results your getting so far!

Wow Pete after watching this video I wanted to take more photos. You are right that everything become monotonous over time. I will find my own challenges so I can improve my self taking photos.

I rlly share a lot of those ranting thoughts you have. ever since i came back to shooting film you see life with a whole new different approach and sometimes things you thought they were going to turn out they just don’t but it’s okay, it’s part of the process of becoming a better photographer. just a quick advise, if you ever feel like a 36 exposure roll is way too much (happens to me too) go ahead and shoot medium format, i’d recommend 6x7 since you get 10 shots and it’s kinda middle ground. sometimes i also struggle with 645 and 6x6. hope you find this helpful and i’m eager to continue to be part of your process with film. cheers from a film lab in mexico. xx
