🇦🇹 Altaussee is a small beautiful village in Styria Austria near Bad Aussee in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria. In this Austria travel vlog, I am exploring one of the best places in Austria through a light travel walking tour. Alaussee is famous as the historic site of the Monuments Men movie and the famous salt mines where the stolen artwork was hidden by the Nazis. If you are looking for things tom do in Salzburg and the Salzburger Land, or you are planning to visit Hallstatt, Altaussee is one of the beautiful places that are usually a bit off the beaten path. Whether you enjoy the beautiful lake on a boat cruise, go swimming, hiking or do a salt mine tour, you can spend the best summer in Austria and have the best summer trip in this hidden gem in Upper Austria at one of the best places in Austria in 2021.
This Austria travel vlog is part of a series of Austria Travel 4K Ultra HD videos. Whether you want to know where to go in Austria, what to do in Austria in Summer, what do you go see in Austria or what are the best places in Austria, this Austria travel diary will hopefully provide some answers. Whether you plan for an Austria day trip or a longer Austria travel to Vienna, Salzburg or the Salzkammergut, there is so much to see in this beautiful Alpine country.
The Salzkammergut (or Salzburger Land) is a particularly attractive region to visit in Austria. So plan to do a travel walking tour in the most beautiful village in Austria, or hike the Alpine mountains, or swim in beautiful lakes during your next Austria vacation ('Österreich Urlaub' in German). There are so many things to do in Salzburg and the surrounding Salzkammergut region that you don't want to miss.
Altaussee is a municipality and spa town in the district of Liezen in Styria, Austria. The small village is nestled on the shores of the Lake Altaussee, beneath the Loser Plateau. Occupying an area of 92 km², Altaussee is home to 1,777 people. The designated climatic spa is within the Salzkammergut region near Salzburg. Altaussee has the biggest salt deposits of Austria, which are still mined today and it is located close to Bad Aussee and a short and beautiful drive away from Halstatt Austria.
During World War II (1943-1945) the extensive complex of salt mines in Altaussee served as a huge repository for art stolen by the Nazis. These artworks were accumulated under the alias Sonderauftrag Linz (Special Commission: Linz) by Adolf Hitler and were intended for the planned Führermuseum in Linz, Austria. At the end of the war the entire depot included around 6,500 paintings, as well as many statues, furniture, weapons, coins, and libraries. After the occupation of Altaussee on 8 May 1945 by an American infantry unit, the art depot was seized by the U.S. Army (Monuments Men).

Janus - I have enjoyed all your videos, but love the ones with a lake focus. I am looking for a small town (1,000-2,000 people) on a small lake in the alps with a trail all the way around (5-10K). In Austria, Altaussee is the only lake I can find that fits the above criteria. Question: where is the town center in Altaussee? Thank you in advance - Erik
@januslog
@januslog Жыл бұрын
Thank you Erik, the town center is a 10 minute walk away from the lake. You may also want to check out Lake Fuschl which may also fit your profile. I have made a separate video on that 👍😊

What a pretty and quiet town. And always: appreciate the drone footage, too, when allowed! Thanks. In the travels of this Austrian series, seems you drove from place-to-place but wondering - how connected is the route via train or bus - similar to Switzerland or is car more practical?
@januslog
@januslog 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Matthew. The public transport network in Austria is very well developed and I’d say it’s comparable to the Swiss one. But it’s still more flexible to take the car. Plus I enjoyed driving those mountain passes and stopping where I wanted to take pictures.
