The Confederate constitution actually had the President only serve 1 term for 6 years, so no reelections

Interesting, I never knew that. They had a much better system then. Nothing does more damage to countries with elective systems of government than the notion of re-election and the incredibly short-sighted decisions it leads to. "Who cares if everything falls apart after the election? Just use the power of the state to make it look like I'm doing a great job until then."

There was a plan to create the “golden circle” which involved the CSA Mexico and the Caribbean. Mexico was currently overthrown by a French government official, so they could of just united

I disagree, in this example Mexico was invaded a few years after the civil war, however I belive the people of the confederacy much like the U.S. after the war of independence (Barbary pirates) would be still able to fight a war with Mexico
@ponraul1221
@ponraul1221 Ай бұрын
@@crrispycreme1484 The Barbary Pirates was a very different scenario. It mostly consisted of naval warfare, while ground battles never consisted of more than several hundred Americans. Invading Mexico would likely be similar in scale to the Civil War itself.

Especially when the Mexican Empire should be their primary ally. Now, does this mean the CSA wouldn't try to swipe some Mexican territory for themselves? Of course not, but they definitely would never go to war unless the Republicans came back to power.

I think the confederacy would keep slavery until around 1895. Brazil alone kept it until 1888. They could become fair weather friends in opposing abolition, likely coming to an end after britain blockades both simultaneously
@Prussia_Mapper
@Prussia_Mapper Ай бұрын
@@flaviusbelisarius7517 I mean Robert E. Lee disliked slavery despite owning some slaves of his own and the reason why he joined the confederate army was because Virginia seceded from the union and Lee didn’t want to abandon his own state which is why he joined on the side of the confederacy. And when he became president in this timeline it would make sense to abolish slavery by the time he was president.
@aesculetum
@aesculetum 26 күн бұрын
The Emperor and the rest of the Imperial Family also didn't like slavery. There would be opposition from the Emperor to buddy up with a CSA with slavery. The abolition of slavery was gradual in Brazil, with three major events: the end of trans-Atlantic slave trade (with the UK strong-arming the slaver plantation owners of Brazil into accepting it in 1931 but only effectively in 1850); the Free Birth Law determined that the sons and daughters of slaves would be free from 1871 on; and finally the Golden Law abolished slavery for those that were still slaves. So, when some Southern Americans fled to Brazil because it was still a slavery country, they were doomed to relive another abolition because the process was already happening. Allying with a victorious slavery CSA would be very controversial in the Empire of Brazil.

@@Prussia_Mapper He was a curious fellow but plenty of Southern generals were against slavery like Thomas Jonathan Jackson, Nathan Bedford Forrest himself was at least resigned to accept the freedom of his own slaves whether the Confederacy won or not and famously gave a speech on reconciliation, although with a stint at the head of the Klu Klux Klan. The Confederacy was willing to emancipate slaves as a War measure which would be realistic but I find it dubious that they would emancipate slaves after the War.

The South becoming independent with Robert E. Lee abolishing slavery immediately after the war would’ve been the best outcome imo. As much as I hate slavery, the South was right about each state having high autonomy and having a very minimal federal government.

I doubt anyone would have been able to abolish slavery that easily. It would have happened eventually, but it would have been a gradual process of each state abolishing it on their own and the government buying out slaves from their masters.
@ponraul1221

@@thomas777803 Maybe, but Lee could've possibly rallied enough support from non-slaveholders who comprised the vast majority of the South's population and men who fought in the war. He would've been Dixie's hero, so perhaps a constitutional amendment outlawing it could've been done. It probably could've been helped by the rest of the world sanctioning and blockading the CSA, which couldn't afford such actions after just fighting a very costly war.
