The United States was born from an idealogical revolution, to split from a king. But what if instead it simply adopted it's own king? Here is one scenario.

To be fair, Augustus **hates** being called a king, and never acts like one, and yet still commisioned a lot of sculptures, depicting him as a general or a political leader. Kings during those times don't want to be depicted like that, barechested wearing a toga, that's the symbol of Republicanism since the Roman times. George Washington, as a humble man, probably won't be too happy having a full-body marble of him commisioned. But he wouldn't be mad either. On the other hand, King George III would probably execute the sculptor if he made a statue of George III wearing a toga. Before you ask, Augustus was never proclaimed king. None of the emperors did until the reign of Diocletian. It took them 300 years to realize that Rome isn't a Republic. If it's a statue wearing an armor, then the person is depicted as a Military Leader/General. If it wears a toga, then the person is depicted as a political leader, and is deeply rooted from Roman republicanism. If they wore an extravagant robe, then a King.

Perhaps, if this type of monarchy was “inherited by blood.” It’s rare, but the monarch could also name a successor. Either way the monarch would have to raise/study their successor to be sure they’re handing the crown to someone worthy.
@robertjarman3703
@robertjarman3703 5 жыл бұрын
@@MasonPerry7 It's not at all rare for monarchs to be elected. Many people don't realize this, but there were actually examples, even from the time that the Constitutional Convention was being authored. Poland Lithuania had such an elected king, and in 1573, had an electoral college consisting of 40 thousand people, and 500 thousand people had the right to vote if they wanted to travel to the place where the vote was being held, which is very nearly the same number of people who voted in the 1789 election that elected George Washington as President. The Dutch had a Statholder, which was like a president for life. The Holy Roman Empire long since had an elective monarchy. In fact, King George the Third, the very man the Americans declared independence from, was actually one of the people who had the right to elect the Holy Roman Emperor by being the elector of Hanover. The Pope is actually an elective monarch, him being the King of the City of the Vatican. Roman kings (as they were up until 507 BC) were elected, genuinely. The English later British themselves had a Parliament who took huge amounts of power from the king, to the point where if they wanted to make the British crown elective, that probably would have been an easy thing to do, and in practice Parliament did choose the crown in important ways, like choosing the Hanoverans rather than the Stuart line, and set out specific rules of inheritance.

Lawrence Washington whom was the son of Margaret Butler. Margaret Butler was the descendant of Sir William Butler, whom was the descendant of Margaret Sutton. Margaret Sutton, daughter of John Suttton, son of Joyce Tiptoft, daughter of Joyce de Cherleton, whom was the daughter of Countess Eleanor de Holand, the daughter of Thomas de Holand.. Thomas de Holand is a direct descendant of Joan Plantagenet, the daughter of the Earl of Kent, whom was the son of Edward Plantagenet, King of England who was himself the grandson of King John of England. Merely being of descent doesn't count for the purpose of legitimacy; for that you would need to be next in the line of succession. A large number of early settlers were younger sons of nobility, but unless the lines of the older brothers died out, neither they nor their kids could have become nobles even if they had stayed in the UK.

That first statue of Washington was meant to be a recreation of a famous statue of Cincinnatus, the legendary Roman general who was begged to come out of retirement and serve as dictator (in the ancient sense of the word). When the crisis had passed, rather than using the army to make himself King, he handed power back to the Senate and went home to his farm. Just like Washington did. When George III learned that Washington had resigned from the army and surrendered all power, he supposedly remarked, "Truly, he is the greatest man in he world."

Yeah and everyone laughed him out of the room for it. But still having a monarch or at least some merger of democratically elected monarch wasn't that far fetched. Electoral monarchies have existed so the idea of an elected monarch isn't that absurd even if it has even been tried on that level. IMO the most interesting scenario as a successful Prussian scheme as the House of Hohenzollern as kings of America and Prussia would create an interesting international relationship.

Actually there was a serious movement to make George Washington king and it almost happened if not for one man. George Washington himself declined the offer and resigned his commission. This was right at the end of the war in 1783 and BEFORE the articles of confederation. George Washington had a standing army of 25,000 men at the end of the Revolution and most of the militias were loyal to general General Washington. This is when George Washington could have been king. It was his for the taking but he resigned his commission as Commander in Chief of the continental army.

Yea this video just pretty much assumes the colonists would have outright rejected an American monarchy which isn't likely as long as it where Washington as the first King, any problems for a United Duchies(No longer called colonies) of the Kingdom of America , UDKA, would occur after the death of King George I and the fact that he did not have a son, so what could happen considering we're talking about the 13 colonies here, is an Elective Monarchy, something akin to the Holy Roman Empire, the likelihood of this nation becoming as large or as strong as the U.S.A. are far less likely to happen imo

I think that this video asks the wrong question. The US becoming a monarchy was extremely unlikely. But, monarchy isn't the only type of autocracy. George Washington basically had to figure out what the Presidency should be. Many people (looking at you Alexander Hamilton) wanted the President to serve for life, and Washington could have very easily remained President for the rest of his life. It was his choice to step down after two terms (and his created the precedent for the two term limit, which was only broken by FDR, and became a law after FDR). If George Washington became President for life, and retained control of the army, this could have set a precedent for an autocratic government similar to post-revolutionary France, Haiti or modern day Russia. Remember, Washington ran for President unopposed in both elections, what if this became the norm? What if Presidents nominated their successors instead of leaving it for the people to decide? Just think of how many revolutions lead to dictatorships. I think, for all his faults, George Washington's greatest trait was his respect for Republican virtues and his conscious effort to limit his own powers and that of his successors.

I could swear there was in fact early talk of making George Washington King of the US, but he didn't want the job. And that there were Americans who were looking among European royalty as an option if they went for a constitutional monarchy. Also, Alexander Hamilton did argue for the idea of an Elective Monarchy, but the proposal was soundly rejected.

As it stands, Washington was only able to cross with less than half his force and there were several decisions by both the British and the Hessians where going the other way could have doomed the attack. For instance, had Rall decided to fortify Trenton then some the early American success in their assault would have been impossible. A British force in Maidenhead would have been able to reinforce the Hessians and trap the American left. Even a tight-run American victory would have been strategically devastating, Colonial morale was already starting to collapse. For Washington himself, it wouldn't be that big a butterfly for his boat to have suffered a mishap, resulting in him landing in the frigid water.

The two typhoons in question actually destroyed the docked Mongol ships in the harbor, thus providing opportunity for Japanese ships to sneak in at night and wreck the crippled force.

I've been trying to work on an alternate history scenario for an American monarchy for a little while now. I'm imagining the structure as being a mix of constitutional monarchy, American federal republicanism, and feudalism, which I'm calling Jeffersonian Monarchy. Basically, the nation has both a king (hereditary) and president (elected) as co-executives, with the executive having basically the powers of the president in our timeline, but with varying degrees of power deepening on whether or not the king and President are in agreement (easiest example is veto power. Either can veto, but if only one does, it's easier for Congress to override than irl, while if both veto its instead harder for Congress to override than irl). Congress and the supreme court are basically the same, though I've been entertaining the idea that each state has a representative who's role is specifically to represent the Prince, or the state's nobility in general. Similar to the central government, each state (in this timeline, principality) has both a governor (elected) and a prince as co-executives. In fact, a system of constitutional aristocracy is embedded into local government on virtually every level, though how succession works for princes and lower ranking nobility is a locally determined matter. The nobility (in general) has some say in local government, receives money from the land they're attached to, and are in charge of preparing, training, managing, etc. military forces, based on the Jeffersonian concept that large, standing, centralized militaries are bad. The nobility mostly exists as a counterbalance to the types of urban elites (bankers, wealthy merchants, etc) that irl Jefferson believed would form a pseudo-aristocracy empowered by their money.

Highly doubt he would just outright become king maybe he would declare himself something akin to "Lord Protector" rather

Why do you think the US's relations with the post-Revolution French Republic would go sour if Washington had appointed himself king? Napoleon did become Emperor anyway. Or, alternatively, if the French Republic had a falling out with "King George Washington", there would be resistance to having Napoleon crowned Emperor. Not only that, given the way the US system was based on Rome, why not a different title (Praetor, Consul)

So, what if, then, there were an alternate reality where the states are dissolved after 1789 and the American Republic, a unitary state, is created?

Hey, I have an interesting video idea that would probably have to be a few part. What if all the states were their own countries? Let's suppose that it happened around this time period. Who do you think would end up with the most land? Do you suppose Mexico would have retained control of Texas? I guess this is assuming that the states still worked together, but retained their own laws and leadership.
