3:11 Temperature Accuracy
3:41 Noise
4:07 Temperature Stability
4:42 Features
6:16 Temperature Range
7:12 Flow Rates
11:05 KettleSummary
Room Temperature Water was 25ºc. Each kettles capacity was filled using scales.
Temperature Testing involved using an ICE calibrated Thermometer. Testing all kettles at 80,90,94ºc & Boiling. All kettles came within 0.5-1ºc of their temperature readouts. This consistency was also observed with the stability test, where the Kettles were left for 10mins off to see how each kettle contained the heat in the kettle. All Kettles read to within 0.5-1ºc range.
Kettle dB reading was checked with the Decimbels app on an iPhone 13 - 2ft away from the Kettle, from room temperature to boiling - noting the maximum dB reading during that time.
The maximum Flow rate was checked by filling all kettles to capacity - boing the water, then pouring the water out again as fast as possible into a container. The flow rate was calculated by dividing the water in the container by the seconds it took to pour out all the hot water.
Minimum Pour rate was attempted, but I was not satisfied with any reliable method to obtain consistent results across the kettles. I did note the Fellow EKG, Bonavita and Timemore Kettle appeared to have a more consistent stream of water, no matter the flow rate or height of pour. However, I was not able to hold a consistent enough slow pour rate across all kettles to accurately, and long enough to pinpoint any advantages from one to another. Though I do recommend in the video, that the Kettles that had naturally slower maximum pour rates did seem to be less difficult in obtaining and maintaining pour rates of less than 10ml/sec versus those kettles that naturally poured higher maximum flow rates.
I will also point out here, from stalling the pouring (slowing the pour rate down so much it stops pouring) - the only kettle that stood out for difficult re-start of pouring was the Varia Kettle, which had quite an exaggerated fluted spout and seemed to hold a vacuum where on restart of pouring, would come out quite fast first before slowing down.
Pour over kettles perfect for drip coffee & immersion brewing. Pour over coffee kettles offer some unique benefits to your brewing process not possible with conventional kettle designs. The thin spouts that feature on the Bonavita, Kalita, & Hario kettle range allow for a much more controlled, precision pour. Offering the perfect combination of form and function, our range of electric & stovetop kettles has been hand-picked by our skilled team of coffee connoisseurs. Boil your water to the perfect temperature with style & precision. Whether you need an electric kettle or are looking to pick up a trendy glass kettle, we have an impeccably stylish range to choose from!
Here’s how to clean an electric kettle:
Mix equal parts of water and white vinegar.
Fill your kettle 1/2 to 3/4 full.
Plug the kettle in and bring to the boil.
Unplug or turn off, and leave to sit for 15-20 mins.
Empty the vinegar mixture and rinse thoroughly.

Very well researched piece. Thank you. I managed to snag a Timemore for $100 almost new. For that price I am contented to overlook its flaws. The 18ml/s pour rate is both a blessing and a curse though. A flow restrictor is a fantastic idea I wish more manufacturers would include.

I had the older model of the Brewista which would boil to your time choosing (alarm). I miss that feature so much! (it stopped working after 4 years) but long story short - I wish ANY of these had that feature because I would buy it in a heartbeat. Great breakdown, AB! I currently own the Fellow, and I agree with AB, that for the money, it's not worth it for other than the aesthetic. Which I won't lie, it looks amazing.

I have MS which is impacting my search. I know I want stainless steel or matte black so I don’t break it, and a gooseneck so I don’t pour too fast. Beyond that, I’m not sure that I need other features. It’s not for fancy coffee. The occasional tea, coffee or cocoa, filling thermoses to prep before adding kids lunches, and filling rubber water bottles to keep beds warm. What makes the most sense for that?

@@AlternativeBrewing That's too bad. Perhaps some day someone will invent a variable temperature kettle that has no plastic or silicone inside it. There is a great demand for such products from people who don't want chemicals leaching from plastic or silicone in their drinks. One of the most popular kettles on Amazon is the Secura SWK-1701DB. The reason is clear from the reviews of the kettle that the absence of plastic or silicone inside the kettle is a key selling point. It has over 10,000 ratings. Yet the Secura is not a variable temperature kettle. It would be nice to get a variable temp one that is truly plastic- and silicone-free inside it.

@@d3olinsky 👍🫖☕ I splurged, too… It took all weekend to break down and throw them my money, though! My old kettle was due for replacement… it was of the “connected to the wall directly” era and the wire ultimately weakened from thousands and thousands of times bringing water to typically a boil… it served me over 15 years, though, (wasn’t made in China, so that is likely a reason for it), so I figure getting a third of that for this era’s machines might be a miracle. I bought two, though (the Bonavita had the stainless steel BASE model-which sure looks slick-$40% off so it was cheaper than the older model even with holiday sales happening)… the other one also had a big discount and has been reviewed a lot but is not a brand I know anything about (it’ll probably go back even though the 3-4 year plans are cheap and would make it a cheap option depending on whether it actually lasted a decent time before needing to deal with customer service… but my brain needed me to at least hold and test out a less costly option… something about spending over $80 [during a pretty good sale] for a vessel solely to heat water hurts my head and heart, even though the end result makes me happy… I am just going to pretend that this definitely will last through 2k full kettles, 2k liters/500gallons and I am “merely” paying 20c more per gallon/5c a liter to have it the right temp. If it doesn’t last 2k times, I’ll be a bit upset given the price! Tap water is revolting here, old pipes and all that, so I don’t even bother trying to use it for anything beyond hygiene purposes! 😂

@cutelittlemoose
@cutelittlemoose 7 ай бұрын
The Brewista just has metal (screws). The Bonavita, kind of Brewista’s predecessor (they worked there before founding Brewista), does have part of the plastic handle inside at the very top of the handle, so steam will hit it but it is well above the fill line and where normal fills would have it make contact (it has been my main frustration with a lot of kettles). That said, lots of regular kettles do have zero plastic. The gooseneck isn’t worth it if you don’t need a slower control of flow (even Brewista have a regular V spout kettle, overpriced as it usually is). If you go for steel, look at reviews for RUSTING more than all else. That will end up being the demise of most kettles that are steel because quality control is all over the place.

Had the Fellow Stagg EKG for over a year. Always loved it and have worked great until recently the kettle started to over-boil. Anything over 205F to boiling temps just splits hot water out like a volcano. And now, the kettle no longer holds your set temperature, making this kettle useless for coffee brewing. This kettle being so beautiful and expensive, I babied it since new and it's super discouraging that these issues are popping up. Did some online research and I realized I'm not alone on the over-boiling issue! Reached out to Fellow and they aren't replacing it since it's out of warranty. It's time to jump ship to a different brand. Very disappointed with Fellow.

It is beyond the scope of this video, but Brewista and Bonavita are both owned by the same company. Bonavita also left many customers out to dry for the last two years while handling its trademark issues with the US distributor and brand management company (also partial designer). It isn't clear that how much they could have done about it, but at least now most customers should be able to resolve warranty issues through the new site which is all owned by the manufacturer now. I personally won't be buying any more of their products since, to me, it looks like they dropped the US partner because they don't feel like they need to hide behind a US company anymore, and the customers were caught in the fallout. The company hasn't released anything official and most of this is taken from court filings and 3rd party interviews. Again, though, the good news is that warranty issues can be taken to the new site for resolution. YMMV

Well let me be the first to express that I am disappointed in the Fellow Stag. At this point, I am throwing away/giving away the Fellow. It pours soooo slowwww. DEAL-BREAKER SLOW(for me anyway). I now take the top off and pour it out of the top sideways when I have to use it(and always spill some of water on he counter). That top? The top is actually 3 pieces and screw apart. I shouldn't have disassemble the TOP of any water kettle into 3 pieces to clean it with soap and water, then let it air dry before reassembling it. I like to refill the water for the next day before I return the kettle to the heating base. The Fellow will try to boil the new water again on its own if you don't turn it off after putting it back. It is unreliable and often does not work. 5/10 times, I hear that new water boiling and have to run over and turn it off AGAIN. The spout just sucks. No ability to control flow speed-and it is SLOW. I loved learning pour technique with my Bonivita. I can pour at the perfect flow for a variety of pour-overs with the Bonitivta(and most of the other kettles in the review). It is a very enjoyable and mindful moment in my coffee making work-flow. The Fellow replaces that experience with :( . To be fair, you want something that looks great & expensive on your counter--this will do very well.
