Frank Sidebottom, remembered fondly as the man with the papier mache head, was the courtjester of the Manchester music and comedy scene for over 25 years but only a privileged few knew the man inside.
Being Frank tells a twisted tale of split personalities - a suburban creative superhero with a fanatical desire to preserve the myth he created, and eventually having to battle against being consumed by his alter ego.
Being Frank: The Chris Sievey Story includes extensive archive from Chris’s personal collection of hundreds of boxes of notebooks, home movies, art and music. Insights from Chris’ family, friends, and colleagues, including Johnny Vegas, Jon Ronson, John Cooper Clarke, Ross Noble, and Mark Radcliffe, finally reveal the unknown story of Chris Sievey - a songwriter, artist, comedian, husband, dad and wayward genius.

I saw the film at the backers screening at the Dancehouse in November and it was absolutely bobbins. You know it wasn't. It really wasn't. I laughed. I cried. And I can't wait to see it again. Brilliant film. Deserves to be an absolute smash.

I remember seeing Frank when I was a kid on ITVs No 73 Saturday morning show in the 80s. So funny. When he did Breville Toaster Frank I couldn’t stop laughing. Comedy gold and so sad Chris’ life ended so young.

Yes my friend No 73. I knew there was a time I first saw Frank S. I thought it was Remote Control. But couldn't think of the other programs. Yes No 73 with that toaster film projector. Don't make programs like that anymore.

Steve Sullivan has made a beautiful, funny, fascinating and moving film about Chris and Frank. It’s not simply a window onto the world of this compulsively creative man but as profound a portrait of a person’s life as any you’ll see.

Brilliant work. Thank you to all who supported this very important project. I met Chris a few times... without that head. The first time.. whilst wearing the head, he scrawled on my Beatles book using a pen with inky troubles, it read ".o .obert, .ove .rank .idebottom!". Beautiful! Dressed as Father Christmas, I've never had an all consuming warm hug quite like the one he gave that night. He was more than fantastic. :)

It's really good to see Chris Sievey documented . Chris Sievey's group The Freshies made a song that we practically like The Undertones "teenage kicks" and it never even got aired. if he'd have stuck with the music he would have made it. Personally, I think the Frank Sidebottom character was his undoing. He had a lot of talent , but Frank Sidebottom took him over.

Saw Frank in Royton in the 80s and laughed so much. Chris was so talented. Still can't believe he's not around. Really looking forward to receiving the film.

still hate that Ronson is still peddling the BS that Frank never made it to the mainstream when everyone that watched morning TV in the 80s knew him, he even had his own chat show in the early 90s on ITV, cant get more mainstream than that.

I think what Jon means is that he wasn’t a massive star like Madonna or whoever. He wasn’t a worldwide phenomenon. (even though he should’ve been 100%) Frank was really only known over here (The UK)

It will be. Us backers are certainly getting DVD versions. It wasn't originally intended to be a theatrical release, but I'm so glad it made it as far as it has! Chris' work deserves a much wider audience.

No. Frank was a fictional version of the Frank character. This is the true story of Frank Sidebottom and the guy he performed as him, Chris Sievey. That 2014 film is 100% fiction.

POSTER Yes there was! Frank (2014) took inspiration from the character and all the insane musical creativity of Chris’ music, but it comes off as it’s own unique film. Highly entertaining.

great film saw it in amsterdam with director present....tragic ending...the xtra head was very unhygenic and unhealthy and led to the big C...its no spoiler cause its not like this in the film
