Richard Georg Strauss (1864 - 1949) Tone Poem 'Ein Heldenleben' (A Hero's Life) for large orchestra, written in the Bavarian Alps in 1898.
Strauss himself is generally thought to be the 'Hero' mentioned in the movement subtitles, but he always denied this, answering "I'm no hero! I'm not made for battle!" On the other hand, he did accidentally write his wife a love theme called "The Hero's Companion"...

Strauss is the guy who writes the hardest part for strings but its totally worth it

I'm no wind player, but it seems to me that he's also the one that writes the hardest parts for winds, given that most classic composers many times focus on strings and write not that prominent parts for winds, let alone percussion

Strauss tended to write hard parts to just about any section of the orchestra lol (I'm a violist and I'm not an exception lol).

Despite Strauss' magnificent orchestration, I must admit I am pretty much in agreement with Vaughan Williams who finds Ein Heldenleben to be 'a most banal piece of sentiment.' (Vaughan Williams On Music, p.162), yet the author admitted he found it 'new, wonderful, astonishing' at the end of his article, possibly to be on the safe side (p.163)

Vaughan Williams was a banal piece of sentiment. This is taut with energy and exuberance.
