This is the second in the series of videos on molasses-bonded sand. Refer to Part 1 for an overview, and to subsequent videos for more substantial information. In this video I will show you how to use simplified methods to produce a casting in an afternoon, or at least in a very short period of time. You will see a very rudimentary furnace that nevertheless melts aluminum, and flasks that can be made in just a few minutes.

This is incredible knowledge! I like petrobond, but it's expensive and so I've been looking for a cheaper homemade alternative. My understanding is petrobond works because the oil partially burns and forms a weak shell. The sugar from the molasses must work in the same way. I hope you make more videos because so many artistry and maker videos are poorly produced, but you are a very good teacher who speaks clearly and doesn't beat around the bush.

Thank you for posting the video! I am working with casting sand made with river sand and bentonite powder but am having difficulty making bronze skillets. Once I can dry off some more sand I hope to make about 100 pounds with molasses as you have demonstrated. Have a great day!

@@zuzuniagrikubanos6473 Your sand looks very workable and I'm impressed any time people get good results such as you did. Nevertheless it looks as though your sand is bonded more with bentonite than with molasses, and I'm trying to replicate, to the extent that I can, the process that I observed in Pakistan. Congratulations on your success.

Reminds me of 5he time I stole sand from the kids’ sandbox and dried it in the oven. Yes, the cat had been making use of the sandbox. We kept it covered after that.

David you are a fantastic resource. If I use Bentonite clay, fine sand and molasses could I deliberately let it dry out before separation from the pattern piece to hopefully preserve the fine detail on the pattern lettering. Then pore the molten brass. Thanks again for your great videos.

That sounds like a great approach as long as the mold isn't too thick, the relative humidity is sufficiently low, and you're not in too much of a hurry.

You could probably recycle the burned sand by just heating it up, but by doing so you may fracture it and create finer particles which would be unhealthy to breathe. you could also probably just crush it with a hammer which would probably be okay, allowing it to be reused.. alternatively, if you have an agricultural or gardening use for it, you could just let it disintegrate in the soil.
