Hey everyone! This week I am back with another chess piece casting video!
I’m going to be using a new graphite chess mold my grandmother bought for me to make the chess pieces.
Unfortunately this did not go to plan and my mold broke on the first pour, however I did get some cool pieces out of it! I will be getting this mold replaced to finish the set in the future!
A side note: this is the only time you’re going to see me doing an outro with that high of a pitch.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed the video, please consider leaving a like and subscribing if you did and I will see you next week!

Thanks for sharing and being honest about the outcome. Bummer about the breakage but hey we learn and try again. I'm new to melting and casting love these videos it's been great encouragement for me.

I try to always share how things go because there's usually something that goes wrong, I'm a human and make mistakes, but you're absolutely right! It sucks when things go wrong but they also present the best opportunities to learn and get better! I'm happy to hear that you've found encouragement from my videos! Definitely keep at it, I found my inspiration to get into it watching BigStackD several years ago and it has been a great experience all around!

If you're looking for any good books or material on sandcasting, I was just recommended a book called "The Complete Handbook of Sand Casting" by C. Ammen (Blue cover with diagrams on it, like 30$ on amazon for hardcover) by an incredibly talented Sandcaster. I just purchased it myself (haven't read it yet), and the Sandcaster who recommended it to me swore that book is gold! I've also seen Metal Casting by Stephen Chastain recommended as well.

A high-silicon alloy like 356 or A356 will shrink about half the amount of that extruded aluminum alloy (likely 6061 or 6063), which has one of the worst (highest) contraction rates of any common metal (1/4” per foot). Try to get something that was cast- car parts, rims (if you can cut/break them up) etc are usually 356 and great for casting (the silicon increases fluidity and helps get more detail too). The solidification shrinkage happens fast, but the plain thermal shrinkage is slower. The graphite is an excellent conductor of heat (as your clamps found out) and the relatively large block acts as a decent thermal mass and heat sink . You may experiment with demolding/shakeout while it’s still hot, ideally just after it’s solidified enough to handle but before it’s had a chance to cool/contract/stress your graphite. You can experiment off camera with your broken mold to get a feel of how quickly you can take them out. I think you would be surprised how quickly they freeze and if you can devise a method of pulling them out gracefully (I cringed a little when I saw you lift the crucible from its lip), you may have great success in making many of these sets without damage to your molds. Good luck.

Thanks for the info! I will try to keep all of this in mind next time I'm messing with molds like this! Also, yeah, the handlebar tongs I have are not great, but for lifting the crucible out of the furnace by the lip they work well. It's one of the main reasons I purchased the new pouring tongs that I use now, I don't want to pour by the lip of the crucible.

that's a cool mold. i would suggest using a die cast aluminum. it will shrink less. I think you are right about the shrinkage.

Zammak-12 will be a better choice for fine detail. It's a Zinc alloy that melts easily, flows well, and doesn't shrink quite as much. Alternatively, you can either add silicon to your aluminum or buy an alloy with it already mixed. The silicon helps with the grain, crystal formation and can cut the contraction by half. Zammak is cheaper.

Nice job casting that set. I wonder if a metal that doesn't shrink as much as aluminum (like tin or zinc) would do better in the mold? It also looks like having some dividers between the pieces when they are poured would keep them from being joined at the bottom. It looked like that made it difficult to pull the pieces out of the mold. The great thing about carbon molds is that they are able to handle high temperatures. It would be really cool to see them cast in copper or bronze. One last thought, you could try gluing the knight mold back together and casting the other half of the set. The mold is already damaged so what do you have to lose? Cheers from Alaska!
@zestyjonssmeltery321
@zestyjonssmeltery321 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I was thinking about that as well, I might look into using one of those metals if I can get this mold fixed. Dividers would also be useful, honestly it was a sloppy pour on my end, I have a heavy hand when it comes to pouring and I forgot how quickly this type of mold fills up. It did make it much more difficult than it needed to be to get the pieces out of the mold. I'm definitely going to try casting copper if I get the mold fixed but I still haven't heard back from the machinist. I have been considering gluing the mold back together however my concern is that the glue will completely fail once high temp metal is in there, and the piece of the mold could get lodged in the middle of one of the chess pieces. I appreciate the comment! Cheers!

@@zestyjonssmeltery321 The broken parts of the knight mold will probably come apart again but my guess is that the metal will harden when it hits the inside of the mold so you might get a usable casting out if it. The worst thing they could happen is you would melt down the bad knight casting. If the mold maker is reluctant to remake the whole set, you really just need a new knight. In any case, I am really interested to see this chess set completed. Cheers from Alaska

That's very true, I may end up trying that! I did actually only ask for them to replace the knight but the mold maker didn't even get back to me, not overly happy with them. I'll see about getting this set completed eventually!

To bad the mold broke, that would have been a nice set. Did you dip the mold in water? There looked to be a lot of water inside that mold when you poured it apart, I would advise against ever putting a graphite mold in water. I dropped one of mine in the bucket on accident and to this day It has not had a good piece come out of it, and what the rapid cooling could also do the graphite. I always just put mine to the side and come back to it the next day, those molds aren't cheap. Good luck
@zestyjonssmeltery321
@zestyjonssmeltery321 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's really unfortunate. I did dip the mold in water but not until it was cooled down to a couple hundred degrees so that I could speed up being able to hold it. I guess that might've been my fatal flaw on this one. Honestly aside from the major crack the rest of the molds held up nicely.
@gregorychaney7604

Before you try casting with it again, you might put the graphite mold in the oven at around 200 degrees for an hour or so to help remove any left over moisture.

You're definitely right! I was trying to not let them connect when I poured, but I have a heavy hand and overpoured by accident. I'll have to give that a try with the knight! Aluminum shrinks a lot when it solidifies and so I may need to use another metal
