Aluminum Tig Welding may not require AC balance but it sure does help. Different manufacturers display AC balance differently...too bad here is no standard.
But understanding it helps to muddle along.

As a non-welder, I'm fascinated by the information presented by Jody and the no nonsense way he clearly explains the subject at hand. The extreme close-ups of his welding tips are nothing short of art -- the art of a master welder. First rate every time! Thank you, Jody!! Roy Lewis Buffalo, NY USA

I have been welding for years now, TIG, MIG and ELECTRODE, but I come to this site to watch his videos every time I have to take a test for a job. He talks the ART and SCIENCE of welding. I know metallurgy of Carbon steel, but this man gives it to you in every day language. I hope he makes a lot of money on his projects as it will be well earned....as he has ALSO helped me make some. LOL.

What a library you've collected here Jody, I'm watching and learning and applying this information to my work here at the end of 2019, and moving forward I'll be using your videos for reference if I have a question or if I'm unsure of what settings to use and what technique is proven. Thanks for your commitment to those that follow.

Another thank you for taking your time to create and post this video, I've just been having my first proper go at welding something useful, a new tank on the side of an aluminum intercooler, getting loads of crap in the weld and finding it very hard to focus the arc. Nice new clean aluminum sheet vs a crap thin radiator...I was really struggling. Top man thanks again.

Great video Jody! Im trying to run some beads on aluminum with a hobart tigwave 250, not a lot of videos out there using these old machines. The ac balance setting on there has a little mark where it says "AC Balanced" but the arc wanders like a drunk hobo. I guess i need to move it closer to the "dc fig/Stick setting," kinda counter intuitive... Do you have access to any old non inverters to do a setup video with? That would rock! Thanks for all the info!

I was just trying to remember EN and EP which one does the cleaning and balls up. I thought must be EN because the current flows into the electrode and watched the video again to find you saying the other way around Then remembered I was told at college current actually physically flows from negative to positive! I wouldn't mind but I've been an electrician for the last 25 years and never considered that since!

At what prosentage do you set it to make a ball on the tungsten? I know not everyone make one, do you recommend making a ball or just letting it ball up as you go? Know you are a fan of sharpening it as well, and I have tried that for shorter small welds with good results. I guess one might combine that with high prosentage of material heat for very tight beads under the perfect circumstances :-)

Got a little lost in the various brands' jargon. Is AC balance adjusting pulse width ratio or pulse height ratio? Is the 99 setting on the miller essentially pulsed DC-EN? Now I want to see what an osmelliscope has to say.

Hi there, I have a Miller Syncrowave 200. I am trying to weld alum. I am having issues with getting the right settings, I am welding 1/8" Any advice on what settings I should set at. I am not getting a weld pool. I am burning though , and the filler rod is melting as I start to apply before I get to the pool. Or where the pool should be. The balance reads 1-10, I am set on AC, set on 115 AMPS. I am dead in the water here.

Thank-You for that Great Video ! My understanding of it is - With the AC balance setup for predominantly cathode negative and by way of example using a 60-70% negative consequently 30-40% cathode positive - that the negative transmits a sufficient amount of thermal energy into the material (Aluminium) thus burning of the oxide - with the remaining 30-40% positive cathode causing a thermodynamic flow - drawing excess heat and oxide/crud up away from the pool - instead of it all been "overcooked" in a splattering pool. With Aluminium melting at 1200F and the Oxide melting at 3600F a 1/3 or 3:1 in total temperature difference - is it a fair assumption that those physical properties correlate to an [approximate] AC balance of 65% negative and 35% positive - similar proportion (considering Lens and material properties thickness)…
