I just pin a channel to the right end of the mixer, route it to nothing and instead output to speakers directly. Far quicker and I don't have to move any of my channel routing around

Another way is to just route the reference track to a mixer channel, unroute it from the master channel and then change the output at the bottom of the channel fx section from "none" to your audio output

Simply have no plugin on your master. Doesn't matter how many reference track you drag in, they'll gonna be sound as they are. Then you gotta work around those reference tracks in the sound designing, arranging & mixing stage. When you're happy with the results proceed for the mastering stage and do whatever sounds good to you. If you're reference a track in your mastering stage. Then add your own track in any of the mixer channel and add effects to that specific mixer channel and let the reference tracks go through the master which doesn't has any plugins in it.
